Who could surpass Kaido by the end of One Piece? As a forecast—not a confirmed ranking—the most plausible candidates include Luffy, Blackbeard, Shanks, Zoro, Mihawk, Buggy and Loki. This list uses Kaido’s official epithet, “strongest creature,” as its benchmark, but separates demonstrated combat evidence from narrative potential. It is current through the manga material listed by VIZ as of October 12, 2026; the listing showed chapter 1195 scheduled for October 11, but its contents are not assessed here, so developments in that chapter are not reflected.
The seven names are an editorial shortlist, not a ranking endorsed by the story’s creators or official series material. A character’s endgame role, room to grow or reputation is not proof that they can defeat Kaido.
What would it mean to surpass Kaido?
The official One Piece.com search material describes Kaido with the epithet “strongest creature.” That makes him a useful high-end benchmark, but the phrase alone does not establish a complete power scale or settle how a hypothetical fight would end. Nor does being a major endgame character automatically place someone above him.

This forecast weighs two different questions: what the manga has demonstrated about a character’s combat ability, and what the character’s unfinished story might still allow. The first is evidence; the second is inference. Official series listings confirm that the anime has a Gear 5 episode, but a catalog entry is not a comparative strength feat.

Seven pirates with a plausible path
These candidates are not equally likely, and the case for each depends on different kinds of uncertainty. Because current manga passages have not been verified for this comparison, the descriptions below avoid presenting specific fights, abilities or outcomes as established evidence.
1. Monkey D. Luffy
Luffy is the clearest candidate to consider because the story centers on his journey as a pirate. His endgame position gives him a plausible path to a level that could exceed Kaido’s benchmark, but narrative centrality is not a demonstrated result. The official anime catalog’s Gear 5 episode confirms the anime features that form; it does not establish that Luffy is stronger than Kaido.
Why he belongs: central protagonist with an unfinished journey. Confidence: plausible forecast, not a settled comparison.

2. Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)
Teach is a natural endgame possibility because his role as a major pirate leaves room for a decisive confrontation as the story approaches its conclusion. That position supports a forecast, not a claim that he has already surpassed Kaido. Without verified current manga evidence for this comparison, no specific feat or ability should be treated here as proof.
Why he belongs: potential endgame significance. Confidence: plausible, with the outcome unconfirmed.
3. Shanks
Shanks is another candidate whose place in the wider pirate story invites speculation about how his strength may compare with Kaido’s. An unresolved role can make a character important to an endgame forecast, but importance does not supply a fight result. This list does not claim that Shanks has beaten or outclassed Kaido.

4. Roronoa Zoro
Zoro’s inclusion is a bet on how far his own ambitions and development may carry him by the series’ end. That is a growth forecast, not evidence that he currently matches Kaido. Without a verified passage establishing a relevant benchmark, it would be misleading to use a specific fight or power claim to rank him above Kaido.
Why he belongs: potential for further growth within the story. Confidence: speculative.

5. Dracule Mihawk
Mihawk makes the shortlist because an eventual comparison with leading combatants is a reasonable question readers may ask. But a character’s reputation or narrative standing cannot substitute for a verified result against Kaido. The available official material does not establish such a comparison, so Mihawk’s place here is a possibility, not a confirmed ranking.

6. Buggy
Buggy belongs only if the question is about who could end up surpassing Kaido, not who has demonstrated the combat ability to do so. His status or reputation is not proof of fighting strength, and comic framing makes a straightforward power forecast especially uncertain. Including him is not a claim that he can defeat Kaido.

Why he belongs: an unpredictable story trajectory. Confidence: very low as a combat prediction; status and reputation do not establish strength.
7. Loki
Loki rounds out the list as a character whose potential remains difficult to assess without sufficiently verified current manga material. A limited or unresolved story role can leave room for a future reveal, but possibility alone cannot support a strong prediction. No specific combat feat is asserted here.

The candidates fall into different kinds of cases: some are included because of their place in the story, some because of possible growth, and others because uncertainty leaves room for a future reveal. None of those reasons is interchangeable with a demonstrated fight result. In particular, a reputation-based or comic turn should not be mistaken for evidence of combat superiority.
For readers who want to check the source material, VIZ lists One Piece, Vol. 113 and One Piece Box Set 5: Wano to Egghead. Those catalog pages identify the manga editions; they do not validate this forecast.
