If one Windows PC serves both your work desk and sim-racing rig, a saved setup profile can switch the displays, audio, windows and apps together. The trigger can be a keyboard shortcut, system-tray action or optional physical button. A KVM solves a different problem: switching one monitor and its keyboard and mouse between two computers.
The distinction matters. A desk-to-rig move is about restoring two workspace layouts on one computer; a KVM is primarily about sharing peripherals across separate computers. This article explains the software approach and the cases where monitor or external KVM hardware fits better.
First decide whether you have one PC or two
There are two workflows that are easy to confuse:
- One PC, two places: The same Windows computer is used at a desk and at a racing rig, often with different displays, audio devices, windows and applications. Saved setup software can coordinate those Windows changes.
- Two PCs, shared peripherals: A work computer and a gaming computer use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse. A monitor with built-in KVM or an external KVM can switch the monitor input and USB devices between them.
A KVM does not, by itself, recreate two separate Windows workspaces on one PC. Conversely, a software profile cannot route a shared keyboard and monitor between two independent computers. Choose the path that matches your hardware before buying anything.

A setup profile records a preferred arrangement for a particular location or activity. For example, a desk profile may select the work monitor and speakers, restore work windows and open chosen apps; a rig profile may enable the racing display, select headset audio and launch a simulator. The exact actions depend on the software and the devices Windows can see.

PitLaunch’s publisher describes support for Windows 10 and 11, locally saved setups, display, audio, window and app switching, per-setup hotkeys, game automation, and control through Stream Deck or Stream Deck Mobile. These are publisher-described features, not independently tested results. See PitLaunch’s official information for current details.
Choose a trigger that suits the routine
- Hotkey: Useful when you want a quick software-only trigger and can remember or reach the keyboard shortcut.
- System tray: Convenient if you prefer to select a setup from Windows rather than assign a key.
- Physical macro control: A Stream Deck can provide a dedicated button, but it only triggers the software action; it does not itself rearrange displays or applications. Stream Deck Mobile is another publisher-documented option, so a physical deck is not required.
- Game automation: The publisher lists game automation as a feature; check its current documentation for how it interacts with your particular simulator and setup.
As of the information published on October 7, 2026, PitLaunch’s publisher described Early Access as including all features for $0, with future paid plans not yet live. This offer can change, so check the official page rather than treating it as a permanent price.

Plan the desk-to-rig switch before relying on it
Profiles are most useful when each location’s devices are consistently available to Windows. Identify which display should be active, which audio output should be selected, what should happen to open windows and which apps should launch or close. Make sure the profile reflects what you actually want to happen when moving between spaces, rather than assuming that a display change alone will put every app in the right place.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Inventory each setup: Note its monitors, audio outputs, and the applications and windows you need.
- Create and save a profile for each location: Configure the desired display, audio, window and app behavior in the selected software.
- Assign an accessible trigger: Set a per-profile hotkey or use a supported tray or control-device action.
- Try the switch while you can recover: Confirm that the intended display and audio return and that app behavior matches your expectations before making the action part of your routine.
- Keep a fallback: Know how to get a usable display back if the target layout does not appear, and avoid relying on an action that closes work you have not saved.
Reduce the risk of losing your screen
Changing display layouts can leave you without a visible screen if the target arrangement fails. PitLaunch’s publisher describes a preflight check, attempts to restore the prior displays and audio after a failed switch, and an emergency shortcut, Ctrl + Alt + Shift + F12, to turn every detected display back on. These are the publisher’s stated recovery behaviors, not a guarantee that every hardware configuration will recover identically.

The publisher also states that undo cannot reopen applications that were closed. Save work before switching if a profile closes apps, and keep a practical fallback such as a reachable keyboard and a display arrangement you know can be restored. A software rollback for displays and audio should not be treated as a substitute for unsaved work recovery.

If two computers share a monitor and keyboard/mouse, a KVM can switch the monitor source and USB control between them. The right choice depends on the monitor and connection chain; check exact model documentation rather than assuming every monitor has KVM or that a switch supports a multi-display racing setup.

| Option | Best fit | What it switches | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saved setup software with hotkey | One Windows PC used at a desk and a rig | Display layout, audio, windows and app behavior, depending on the software | Windows support, whether displays and audio devices are visible to Windows, app behavior and recovery options |
| Macro keypad or Stream Deck | A dedicated physical trigger for a software action | Triggers an action; does not independently route video or rearrange Windows | Whether the chosen software supports the control and action; whether a hotkey or mobile control is enough |
| Monitor with built-in KVM | Two computers sharing a compatible monitor and USB peripherals | Monitor source and connected USB control | That the exact model supports KVM, its video inputs, USB upstream wiring, computer ports and any feature trade-offs |
| External KVM switch | Two computers sharing a display and USB peripherals when the monitor lacks a suitable KVM | Video and USB peripherals | Port type, display count, resolution and refresh rate, signal-chain support, EDID behavior and whether audio or additional hubs are needed |
Check a monitor’s built-in KVM
KVM is available only on select monitors, according to Dell’s KVM setup guide. Its guide describes connecting each computer’s video and USB upstream connection to the monitor, then connecting the keyboard and mouse to the monitor’s downstream USB ports. ASUS’s Auto KVM guide documents model-specific combinations of USB-C/video and HDMI or DisplayPort, and says a physical monitor function key can switch sources. Port combinations and controls vary by model, so confirm them in the exact monitor’s documentation.
Check an external KVM’s video chain
Before buying an external switch, verify that the computers, switch and display all support the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use, and confirm the connector type and number of displays. For a concrete but limited example, StarTech’s P2AD122 listing describes switching two DisplayPort computers to one DisplayPort display with USB peripherals, at 4K and 60 Hz. Those specifications apply to that listed switch, not to all KVMs, monitors or triple-screen arrangements.
