Laimosemion laranja is a newly described killifish from Brazil’s Amapá state, and researchers know it from only three small seasonal pools. The total known range is under about 10 square miles. Because those pools already face deforestation, mining sediment and plastic pollution, one spill, earthmoving project or severe sediment event could destroy the species’ entire known habitat.
The species was formally described in 2026 using morphological and molecular evidence. Researchers recommend an endangered classification and expansion of the neighboring Rio Cajari Extractive Reserve, but the report says L. laranja was not yet on the IUCN Red List when it was published.
What scientists discovered
The new fish is Laimosemion laranja, a member of the rivulid killifish family. The describing study, “A new killifish of the genus Laimosemion (Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae) from Rio Cajari in the Brazilian Amazon,” recognized it as a distinct species from a combination of body characteristics and genetic evidence. The peer-reviewed record is available through the study’s Zenodo record, and Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid at its species entry.
The type locality is Igarapé Massaranduba in the Rio Cajari drainage, within Laranjal do Jari municipality, Amapá, Brazil. The species name “laranja” refers to the males’ orange coloration and to Laranjal do Jari, connecting the scientific name to both the fish and the place where it was found.

Where the fish lives
L. laranja is not known from the Amazon basin as a whole. Its confirmed distribution is a tiny part of the lower Rio Cajari drainage. The report identifies three small, seasonal pools beside streams near Laranjal do Jari. These are temporary-water habitats that can shrink or dry as conditions change, then refill during the rainy season.
That distribution is unusually restricted even for a small seasonal-pool fish. A range of less than roughly 10 square miles means there may be little or no separation between a local environmental accident and a species-wide crisis. The cataloged type locality at Igarapé Massaranduba is one precisely documented point within this limited area, not evidence that the fish occupies the entire river system.
How to recognize Laimosemion laranja
Males
According to the 2026 report, males have orange spots across the front half of the body, orange V-shaped bars toward the rear and fins that combine bright orange and blue. Those markings are the most visible reason the species name evokes “orange.”

Females
Females are less vivid. Their fins are described as yellowish or greenish, and they lack the males’ distinctive orange bars. Color alone should therefore not be used to identify every individual.
Size and genetic distinction
Individuals are reported to be under 1.2 inches long. The report also gives a 5.3% mitochondrial-DNA difference from the nearest relatives, a result used alongside physical traits in recognizing the species as distinct. That percentage is a comparison from the describing work, not a measure of population size or extinction risk.
Why one disaster could be enough
The immediate danger is the combination of a very small range and existing disturbance at all three reported sites. The accompanying account describes mining sediment discoloring water at one pool and plastic pollution at another. Deforestation and urban expansion add pressure around the habitat.

A single event could affect multiple pools because they are close together and connected to the same drainage landscape. Plausible examples include:

- An earthmoving or road project that fills a pool, blocks drainage or sends a heavy sediment pulse downstream.
- Runoff from cleared land that smothers shallow habitat or changes water chemistry.
- A large pollution event that carries plastic or other waste into more than one seasonal pool.
If an event destroyed or made all three known pools unlivable, there would be no confirmed habitat left for the known population. That is why the headline risk is not that one fish would die in a disaster, but that the entire documented distribution could be affected at once.
What is known about its seasonal biology
L. laranja belongs to a killifish family that includes species adapted to temporary waters. Some Amazon rivulids survive seasonal drying by producing embryos that pause development in damp mud until rain refills their pools. This is useful family-level context, but the cited report does not establish every detail of that survival strategy specifically for L. laranja.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Seasonal adaptation also does not make a population immune to pollution or habitat removal. Dormant embryos cannot compensate for a pool being excavated, buried, contaminated or cut off from the conditions needed for the next generation.

The researchers say the species appears to meet criteria for an endangered classification and recommend extending the Rio Cajari Extractive Reserve. Their recommendations point to several complementary actions rather than a single fix.
Recommended Free Tools
| Response | Purpose | What the available account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Protect the three known pools | Prevent immediate loss of the only confirmed habitat | Supported as an urgent priority because each site is small and disturbed |
| Control sediment and pollution | Reduce mining runoff, discoloration and plastic entering the pools | Existing sediment and plastic impacts are reported |
| Expand the Rio Cajari Extractive Reserve | Give the habitat broader, longer-term protection | Explicitly recommended by the researchers |
| Formal endangered listing | Recognize the species’ vulnerability in conservation policy | Recommended by the researchers; not an IUCN decision |
| Captive maintenance | Preserve animals or embryos away from damaged habitat | No species-specific captive-breeding program is documented in the account |
Local stewardship matters alongside formal protection. Monitoring water color, sediment, plastic accumulation and pool boundaries could reveal damage before a seasonal population disappears. Any collection of wild fish should be left to authorized researchers and conservation authorities; the available evidence does not support treating L. laranja as an aquarium species.

Is the fish on the IUCN Red List?
Not yet, according to the report accompanying the discovery. The researchers’ view that the fish meets endangered criteria is a scientific recommendation, not an official IUCN Red List assessment. Until an assessment is published, the most accurate description is that L. laranja is a newly described species with an exceptionally small known range and serious documented threats, but without a posted IUCN category.
Why this discovery matters
Describing a species does more than add a name to a catalog: it identifies a population that can be monitored and protected. In this case, the formal description also exposes how little room there is for error. Three seasonal pools, all already showing human disturbance, represent a fragile conservation target. Protecting those pools and the surrounding Rio Cajari landscape is the only way to reduce the chance that one disaster becomes the species’ last record.
