A small left-right battery difference does not by itself mean an AirPod is defective. One earbud may have had a different workload, or it may not have charged fully. Check that both AirPods charge in the case, then compare them under similar conditions. Apple publishes no universal acceptable percentage gap between the two earbuds.

Why one AirPod may lose charge faster

Different use can create different workloads

Frequent single-ear use can mean one AirPod does more work than the other. Microphone use during calls or Siri is another possible source of imbalance. These are possibilities to investigate, not explanations that apply to every model or user. Apple’s support guidance does not connect a particular left-right battery difference to microphone assignment. Independent troubleshooting guidance suggests checking microphone assignment if the difference seems linked to calls or Siri.

One AirPod may not have charged fully

A battery reading can look uneven simply because one earbud did not make a reliable connection in the case. Apple recommends checking the charge status of each AirPod and confirming that each shows as charging when placed in the case. Apple’s steps for an AirPod that will not charge include checking that it is seated properly.

A recurring imbalance may need diagnosis

If both earbuds start fully charged, each registers as charging in the case, and the same side repeatedly dies much sooner during comparable use, the pattern warrants further diagnosis. Battery percentages alone cannot establish remotely whether a battery is worn or another fault is present.

Apple Wireless Charging Case for Airpods (Latest Model) - White (Renewed)
  • With the Wireless Charging Case, charging is as simple as placing your AirPods in the case and laying it on a Qi-compatible charging mat.
  • The LED indicator on the front of the case lets you know that your AirPods are charging.
  • And when you’re away from a charging mat, you can use the Lightning port to charge.
  • The Wireless Charging Case works with AirPods (1st and 2nd generation) and can hold multiple charges.

How to check and troubleshoot the difference

  1. Charge the case and both AirPods. Put both earbuds in the case. When troubleshooting an AirPod that is not working, Apple recommends leaving them in the case for 30 seconds. Apple’s troubleshooting instructions provide the steps.

  2. Check each earbud’s charge status. Open the case near an iPhone or iPad and look at the displayed status for each AirPod. Place each one in the case and confirm that it shows as charging. You can also check charge status from a Mac or the case. Apple explains how to check AirPods battery status.

  3. Reseat an AirPod that does not show as charging. Make sure it is positioned correctly, then inspect the case and charging connections. If the case itself will not charge, Apple advises checking the cable and power connections and cleaning the case’s charging port. Follow Apple’s charging guidance; cleaning can address a connection problem, but it cannot restore a worn battery.

  4. Compare them in a controlled session. Start with both AirPods fully charged and use them together for the same session with the same settings. Avoid calls and single-ear use during the comparison, then repeat the check. This is a practical way to isolate differences, not an Apple-certified test or a test with a published pass/fail percentage.

  5. Check microphone assignment if relevant. If the imbalance seems to occur during calls or Siri use, look at the microphone setting and consider returning it to Automatic, then observe whether the difference changes. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not proof that microphone assignment caused the drain.

  6. Reset and seek support if the pattern persists. If the same AirPod continues to fail or drain much faster after these checks, reset the AirPods and contact Apple Support for diagnosis. Apple recommends resetting when earlier troubleshooting does not restore normal function. See Apple’s reset and troubleshooting steps.

How to tell a usage difference from a charging or hardware issue

What you observe What it may suggest What to check next
Battery readings differ, but both AirPods work normally A difference alone does not establish a defect. Battery life varies with settings, environment, and usage. Check that both started fully charged and compare them during similar sessions. Apple’s model comparison page notes these factors but gives no left-right tolerance.
One AirPod does not show as charging in the case The earbud may not be seated or making a charging connection. Reseat it and inspect the case and charging connections using Apple’s charging steps.
The imbalance seems connected to calls, Siri, or one-ear use Different workloads are a possible explanation, though they do not prove the cause. Compare similar sessions without those differences; if relevant, check microphone assignment.
The same side repeatedly dies much earlier after charging checks A persistent issue may need diagnosis; the battery percentages alone cannot identify the fault. Reset the AirPods and contact Apple Support if the problem continues.

What Apple does—and does not—say about the gap

Apple says AirPods battery life depends on settings, environment, usage, and other factors, but its published guidance does not specify a universal acceptable left-versus-right percentage difference. The cited sources also do not quantify how often this happens. Treat the pattern across comparable sessions and the charging status of each earbud as more useful clues than a single reading. Apple’s battery-life comparison information provides context, not a left-right diagnostic threshold.
