Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale is a single-player rhythm-and-puzzle action-adventure from Malaysian studio Metronomik, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Planned for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, it makes music, food and Southeast Asian cultural references part of how the game is played—not merely its visual theme.
What is Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale?
You play as Kaya, a young adventurer pursuing certification as a Worldbuilder in the imaginative world of Selera. Her coming-of-age story focuses on family, courage and self-discovery. To qualify, Kaya must find Giants scattered across Selera and perform the Renewal Ritual, restoring the world’s fading flavors.
The game combines exploration, environmental puzzles, rhythm-based inputs and action encounters. Bandai Namco describes it as a heartwarming puzzle action-adventure, while the PlayStation listing categorizes it under puzzle, music/rhythm and adventure.

How rhythm shapes the gameplay
Music is a core system. Keeping time with the soundtrack can open routes, activate mechanisms, power encounters and strengthen Kaya. That means rhythm is connected to progression: listening and responding to tempo should matter as much as choosing where to walk or which object to move.

Exploration and traversal
Musical timing helps Kaya interact with the world and reach places that are otherwise inaccessible. The available descriptions do not specify a single rhythm difficulty setting or whether missed beats always cause damage, so those details remain to be confirmed.
Encounters and abilities
Kaya fights with her Spoon and uses the Ondeh’s distinctive powers to interact with the environment and defeat eccentric creatures. The design links combat and world interaction rather than treating them as entirely separate modes.

Puzzles in Selera
Puzzle solving uses environmental manipulation and familiar adventure-game logic. A reported demo sequence included pushing and pulling objects, pressing switches and negotiating strong winds before reaching Salty Village.

- Read the space. Look for movable objects, switches, hazards and rhythm cues.
- Change the environment. Push or pull objects into useful positions and activate switches.
- Use timing. Follow musical tempo when a route, mechanism or encounter responds to the beat.
- Apply Kaya’s tools. Use the Spoon and Ondeh powers when ordinary movement cannot solve the problem.
This combination should appeal to players who enjoy exploration puzzles but want a stronger musical layer than a conventional adventure game. The demo reporting establishes examples of interactions, not the full range of puzzle types in the finished release.

Why ondeh ondeh and kaya matter
The title refers directly to foods familiar across Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Onde-onde, also called ondeh ondeh in Singapore and Malaysia, is a chewy pandan rice-flour kueh filled with gula melaka and coated in grated coconut. Kaya is a sweet coconut jam commonly served in the region.
Those references explain the game’s food-centered fantasy. Selera’s villages, flavors and musical traditions are intended to evoke Southeast Asian life, while the fictional setting gives the developers room to build a whimsical world around those influences. For regional players, the name and trailer imagery carry cultural associations that a generic fantasy title would not.

Story goal: becoming a Worldbuilder
Kaya’s objective is more specific than simply saving a kingdom. She must gather the Giants and complete the Renewal Ritual to rejuvenate Selera’s flavors, earning the right to become a Worldbuilder. That structure gives the journey a clear checklist while leaving room for personal growth and encounters with the communities she visits.
Release window and platforms
The announced release window is 2027. No day or month has been confirmed; PlayStation currently lists the date as “to be determined.”
