Once Upon A KATAMARI does not have a documented in-game Performance or Quality graphics preset on Switch 2. The settings you can meaningfully change are the console’s display output and play mode. Bandai Namco lists output of up to 3840×2160 on a 4K display in TV mode (not while you are actively rolling through a stage), up to 1920×1080 in handheld or tabletop mode, a maximum of 60 frames per second, and no HDR support.

The original Nintendo Switch release receives a Switch 2 update that improves frame rate and adds mouse controls. The separate native Switch 2 edition is described as having smoother performance and enhanced graphics, so the update and the native release should not be treated as visually identical.

What performance should you expect on Switch 2?

Official specifications establish the ceiling, not a guarantee that every scene will render at that ceiling. In TV mode, Bandai Namco Entertainment Japan lists a maximum output of 3840×2160 (4K) when the console is connected to a 4K monitor. The same listing specifically says 4K is not available while you are actively rolling through a stage. In handheld and tabletop modes, the listed maximum is 1920×1080.

The published frame-rate maximum is 60 fps. That number describes the top supported rate; it does not establish a locked 60-fps result in every level, camera angle, or effect-heavy moment. No mode-by-mode frame-time measurements or guaranteed locked-rate figures are documented in the official material.

Bandai Namco also lists HDR as unsupported. A compatible HDR television will still display the game, but Once Upon A KATAMARI is not documented as producing an HDR image, so enabling HDR on the television cannot add game HDR data that the software does not provide.

Play situation Official maximum or capability Important qualification
TV mode Up to 3840×2160 on a 4K monitor 4K is unavailable during active stage play.
Handheld mode Up to 1920×1080 This is the listed output ceiling, not a promise that every scene internally renders at 1080p.
Tabletop mode Up to 1920×1080 Uses the same published ceiling as handheld mode.
Frame rate Maximum 60 fps No official claim says that 60 fps is locked in all scenes.
HDR Unsupported TV-side HDR settings do not create native HDR output.

Are there graphics or performance presets to change?

Bandai Namco’s reviewed Switch 2 specifications do not list an in-game graphics preset. There is no documented menu option called Performance Mode, Quality Mode, Resolution Mode, or an equivalent selector for choosing between image quality and frame rate. Do not assume that such options exist simply because other Switch 2 games provide them.

You can still make sensible setup choices:

  • For a television: use TV mode and set the console’s display output to suit the connected screen. A 4K television is eligible for the published up-to-4K TV output, subject to the active-stage caveat.
  • For handheld or tabletop play: the official ceiling is 1920×1080. Changing a system output value does not prove that the game’s internal render resolution has changed.
  • For HDR: leave expectations at standard dynamic range because the publisher lists HDR as unsupported.
  • For frame rate: there is no documented switch that forces 60 fps. The game software controls its frame pacing within the stated maximum.

On the console, open System Settings and the TV or display-output section to match resolution and related output options to your screen. Those system controls govern the signal sent to the display; they should not be confused with a game-level resolution toggle.

Original Switch software versus the native Switch 2 edition

There are two distinct ways to play. You can launch the original Nintendo Switch software on Switch 2 after downloading its update, or you can use the native Switch 2 release. The available descriptions overlap in places but do not establish that both versions have exactly the same rendering features.

Documented update or feature Bandai Namco Japan says the Switch 2 update improves frame rate and adds mouse controls. Bandai Namco America describes smoother frame rate, enhanced graphics, and mouse controls for the Switch 2 version.
Graphics parity The update documentation does not say that the original software receives every visual enhancement of the native edition. Enhanced graphics are a publisher product claim, not an independent resolution or frame-time benchmark.
Maximum display figures Bandai Namco’s Switch 2 specifications list up to 4K in TV mode, up to 1080p handheld/tabletop, and 60-fps maximum. The same published platform figures apply to the Switch 2 product listing; exact internal resolutions by scene are not stated.
Mouse controls Added by the Switch 2 update according to the Japanese support information. Included in the native Switch 2 feature description from the US launch announcement.

The regional wording needs care. Japan’s support page explicitly describes a downloadable update for the Switch software when it is launched on Switch 2. The US launch announcement markets the native release with smoother frame rate and enhanced graphics compared with the Switch version. Those statements support a practical distinction: the free update improves the old software, while the native edition is the product positioned as having additional graphics work. They do not provide a controlled test proving that one version always renders at a different resolution or holds a different frame rate.

Independent observations about smoothness and loading

Nintendo Life’s 2025 review found performance relatively smooth on both the original Switch and Switch 2. Its reviewer noticed more apparent frame drops on the original hardware during busy moments, while transitions on Switch 2 seemed faster and overall performance steadier. The review also said there was no bespoke optimization specifically designed for the newer hardware. These are editorial observations rather than a frame-rate capture, so they should not be read as a 60-fps guarantee.

The same review observed brief loading pauses of roughly two to three seconds when a larger playable area opened after a weight-class increase. That timing is an outlet observation, not a publisher specification. A short pause at those progression points is therefore normal evidence of the game loading the expanded area, not by itself a sign that the console or display is malfunctioning.

Nintendo Life estimated around 50 stages and an eight-to-10-hour main-game completion time, with additional time for completionists. Those figures describe the reviewer’s play estimate and are unrelated to the console’s graphics settings.

Recommended setup, step by step

1. Choose the appropriate play mode

  1. Use TV mode when you want the published up-to-3840×2160 output ceiling on a 4K monitor.
  2. Use handheld or tabletop mode when portability matters; both have a listed ceiling of 1920×1080.
  3. Remember that the 4K figure does not apply while you are actively rolling through a stage.

2. Match the console output to the display

  1. Open the Switch 2’s System Settings.
  2. Go to the TV or display-output settings.
  3. Select an output appropriate for the connected screen rather than forcing a mode the display cannot accept.
  4. Return to the game and judge the result from the actual image and responsiveness; a system output selection is not an in-game preset.

3. Update the original Switch software if you own it

  1. Start the original Once Upon A KATAMARI software on Switch 2.
  2. Allow the available Switch 2 update to download and install.
  3. Use the updated software if you want the documented frame-rate improvement and mouse-control addition without buying the native edition.
  4. Do not assume the update automatically supplies every enhanced-graphics feature advertised for the native Switch 2 release.

4. Keep HDR expectations realistic

Because HDR is listed as unsupported, troubleshoot an unexpectedly standard-looking image as an SDR presentation first. Changing the television’s HDR preference cannot make the game output HDR metadata or HDR color.

Save transfer and edition compatibility

Moving from the original Switch to Switch 2 has a specific condition. Bandai Namco Europe says save transfer is possible only when no save data already exists for the game on the new console. If a save is already present on Switch 2, the transfer condition is not met, so check the destination before starting the process.

Bandai Namco Japan’s FAQ describes the arrangement as transfer from Switch to Switch 2, not a general cross-save system. Cross-save is unsupported, and transfer from Switch 2 back to the original Switch is unavailable according to that FAQ. Treat the move as a one-way migration rather than synchronization between two active consoles.

DLC is edition-specific. Content purchased for one platform edition cannot be used with the other edition, so verify whether you are buying add-on content for the original Switch software or for the native Switch 2 release before completing a purchase. The publisher’s launch material also promotes the Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC, which contains 10 quests and their soundtracks from the mobile game Katamari Damacy Rolling LIVE; its compatibility should be checked against the edition you own.

Storage size and download planning

Published storage figures are not identical across listings. Bandai Namco Japan lists 4 GB, while Nintendo of America’s Switch 2 store listing gives 5.1 GB. The difference may reflect regional listing practice or measurement context. Do not treat either number as a universal installation size; check the local Nintendo eShop listing on the account and region you use, and leave additional free space for updates.

The native Switch 2 standard edition is described by Bandai Namco Japan as download-only. That matters if you are planning a physical-library purchase or moving an existing cartridge: confirm which edition you are acquiring before assuming that a cartridge or digital license covers both versions.

Troubleshooting common expectations

“I cannot find a Performance Mode menu.”

That is expected based on the published documentation. No selectable graphics preset is documented. Use the console’s display settings and the desired play mode instead.

“My 4K television does not show 4K while I am rolling.”

The official TV specification expressly excludes 4K during active stage play. A 4K display connection alone therefore does not guarantee a 4K image throughout gameplay.

“The game does not look like HDR.”

HDR is listed as unsupported, so a standard-dynamic-range image is the documented behavior.

“The original Switch version feels less steady in crowded scenes.”

Nintendo Life reported more noticeable drops on original Switch in busy moments and steadier performance on Switch 2. That observation is consistent with the publisher’s update claim, but it is not a measured guarantee for every stage.

“My expanded area pauses for a few seconds.”

Nintendo Life observed approximately two-to-three-second loading pauses when areas expanded after a weight-class increase. Brief pauses at that transition are therefore an observed behavior of the game, not proof of a defective console.

Which version makes sense?

Choose the updated original Switch software if you already own it and primarily want the documented frame-rate improvement and mouse controls on Switch 2. Choose the native Switch 2 edition if enhanced graphics and the publisher’s separately positioned smoother-performance feature set matter enough to justify owning that edition. The available evidence does not establish exact frame-rate numbers, internal render resolutions, or a universal visual gap in every scene, so a decision based on a promised locked 60 fps would go beyond what has been published.

Whichever edition you use, the practical settings advice is the same: select the play mode that fits your screen, match the console’s output to that display, and do not expect HDR or a hidden quality/performance toggle. Keep save-transfer conditions and edition-specific DLC in mind before changing versions.

Bottom line

Once Upon A KATAMARI on Switch 2 is documented for up to 4K TV output outside active stage play, up to 1080p in handheld or tabletop mode, and a maximum of 60 fps, with HDR unsupported. There is no documented in-game graphics preset to switch. The original Switch software benefits from a Switch 2 update, while the native edition is separately advertised with smoother performance and enhanced graphics; available sources do not prove that the two versions are graphically identical.
