Once Upon A KATAMARI launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. The Switch 2 edition adds mouse controls, smoother frame rates and enhanced graphics. The original Nintendo Switch edition also runs on Switch 2 and receives a free update that improves performance and unlocks mouse controls, but its save and downloadable-content rules are different. Identify which edition you own before changing systems, then choose a steering scheme and learn the documented ZR power-item command.

First, identify your edition

There are two ways to play the game on Nintendo’s newer console:

Situation What you get Important limitation
You buy the Nintendo Switch 2 edition The publisher describes exclusive mouse controls, smoother frame rates and enhanced graphics compared with the Switch version. Switch-version DLC is not automatically usable; you need the compatible Switch 2 version of that DLC.
You own the Nintendo Switch edition and play it on Switch 2 A free update improves performance and unlocks mouse controls on the Switch copy. This is still the Switch edition, with separate save-transfer and DLC rules from the Switch 2 edition.

Bandai Namco’s October 8, 2026 launch announcement summarizes the new edition as introducing “exclusive new mouse controls, alongside smoother framerate and enhanced graphics from the Nintendo Switch version.” That statement describes the Switch 2 release; it does not mean every visual difference or input behavior is identical between editions.

Nintendo lists the Switch game as supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. Nintendo also warns that the experience can differ on Switch Lite, so do not assume that a Lite-specific control layout or performance result applies to Switch 2.

Controls you can rely on

Power items use ZR

Bandai Namco Europe’s official Switch FAQ gives one explicit command: press ZR to activate a power item. The examples named in the FAQ include the magnet, timer and rocket. This is the documented button assignment; official material reviewed for this guide does not provide a complete movement-button chart for every control method.

The magnet draws nearby objects toward your katamari, according to Nintendo and Bandai Namco descriptions. Use it when several collectible objects are close but awkwardly positioned rather than spending time trying to line up each one. The timer and rocket are also activated with ZR when they are available, but the sources do not define an additional button sequence.

Two steering schemes are described by an independent guide

An independent controls guide from Keymap Labs describes two schemes and places the setting at Settings > General > Control Type:

  • Usual Stuff: both sticks steer the katamari. The guide compares the arrangement to the two tracks of a tank: coordinating the sticks produces turns and forward or backward movement.
  • Simple: the left stick rolls the katamari while the right stick looks around. This separates movement from looking and can be easier if simultaneous two-stick steering feels awkward.

Because that explanation is secondary-source guidance rather than an official button chart, confirm the labels on your own in-game control screen. Names, prompts or behavior can change after an update, and remapped inputs may not match the default scheme.

Mouse controls are available, but individual gestures are not documented here

The Switch 2 edition adds mouse controls. The free update for the Switch version played on Switch 2 also unlocks them. The official launch and specification information confirms availability but does not explain each mouse gesture, gesture direction or gesture-to-action mapping. Do not rely on an internet diagram that presents an unverified gesture as an official command.

Start a stage, open the current control-help screen and follow the prompts shown for your connected mouse. If an action does not respond, switch temporarily to a stick scheme to determine whether the problem is the mouse connection, the selected control type or the action itself. Mouse input is unavailable during online matches, so a control method that works in a solo stage cannot be assumed to work in KatamariBall.

Choose a steering scheme in your first session

  1. Open the setting: from the game menus, go to Settings > General > Control Type.
  2. Try Usual Stuff in an open area: spend a short practice period coordinating both sticks before entering a stage with narrow passages. Make small, deliberate inputs rather than holding a stick fully to one side.
  3. Try Simple if coordination is tiring: use the left stick for rolling and the right stick for looking. This can make camera checks less disruptive to movement.
  4. Check the prompt after changing input: review the in-game help screen so the displayed controls match your selected type, mouse use or any remapping.
  5. Keep the scheme that lets you turn without hesitation: quick direction changes matter more than selecting the scheme another player calls “standard.”

There is no documented requirement to buy a special controller to access Switch 2 mouse controls. Joy-Con 2 hardware may be part of your setup, but the available official information does not establish a separate required accessory or configuration.

How to grow reliably in early stages

Build size before forcing a difficult pickup

The official descriptions establish the basic growth loop: collecting objects makes the katamari grow. They do not publish a universal numerical size cutoff for every object or obstacle. If an object will not roll up, treat that as a signal to collect easier items first, then return after growing. This is a practical strategy, not a quoted threshold.

  1. Start with accessible objects. Clear nearby items in an open area where you can turn without repeatedly colliding with walls.
  2. Use the camera to scout. In Simple mode, the right stick looks around while the left stick continues to handle movement. In Usual Stuff, make short steering corrections so looking and rolling do not pull you off course.
  3. Revisit blocked routes. After collecting a group of easy objects, approach the earlier obstacle again. If it still does not roll up, leave it and continue collecting rather than repeatedly striking it.
  4. Save power items for a cluster or emergency. The magnet is most useful when nearby objects are difficult to approach individually; activate it with ZR.

Practice in a safe, open section before attempting tight turns. Learning how far the katamari travels from a brief stick movement is more useful than memorizing a single sensitivity setting, because the correct adjustment depends on your chosen control type and comfort.

KatamariBall and online-control restrictions

KatamariBall is an online mode for up to four players. Bandai Namco’s FAQ says you can create private rooms and that CPUs fill unoccupied places. Local play is unavailable for this mode. Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play.

  • Player count: up to four online participants.
  • Room option: private rooms are supported, with CPUs filling open slots.
  • Local multiplayer: not available for KatamariBall.
  • Subscription: Nintendo Switch Online is required.
  • Mouse restriction: the Switch 2 specification says mouse controls cannot be used in online matches.

Choose a stick-based control type before joining a match if you planned to use a mouse in solo play. This avoids entering a room and discovering that your preferred input is disabled.

Save transfers: the one-way condition matters

Bandai Namco states that a Switch save can be transferred to the Switch 2 version only when the Switch 2 system does not already contain save data for the game. The Japanese Switch 2 product information further describes migration as one-way, from Switch to Switch 2, with no cross-save arrangement.

  • Check the Switch 2 system for existing save data before beginning a migration.
  • Do not expect progress created on Switch 2 to synchronize back to the Switch edition.
  • If the Switch 2 version already has save data, the stated transfer condition is not met; do not erase data casually just to test the process.

Make your edition and save decision before investing many hours in a new file. A transfer is a system-data operation, not a way to merge two separate progress files.

DLC compatibility and the Rolling LIVE Highlights add-on

Switch and Switch 2 downloadable content is version-specific. DLC purchased for the Switch edition is not usable in the Switch 2 edition without purchasing the compatible Switch 2 version. Check the edition name in your console’s storefront before paying, especially if both versions appear in search results.

Bandai Namco describes the paid Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC as available across Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Its documented contents are:

Troubleshooting checklist

The power item does nothing

  • Confirm that the item is available in the current situation.
  • Press ZR, the button named by Bandai Namco’s official FAQ.
  • Open the control-help screen to check whether inputs were remapped.
  • If using a mouse, test the same stage with a stick scheme; the official materials do not document a universal mouse gesture for item activation.

The katamari will not pick up an object

  • Collect nearby, easier objects to increase size.
  • Approach the obstacle again after growing.
  • Avoid treating an undocumented numeric cutoff as a guaranteed rule; no such universal number is provided in the cited official material.

Mouse input is missing

  • Confirm that you are on Switch 2, or that the Switch edition has received its free Switch 2 update.
  • Check the game’s current control screen and the console’s mouse connection.
  • Leave KatamariBall or another online match before testing mouse input, because mouse controls are disabled online.

Transferred progress or DLC is missing

  • Verify that the Switch 2 system did not already contain save data when you attempted the transfer.
  • Remember that migration is Switch-to-Switch-2 only; it is not cross-save.
  • Check that purchased DLC matches the edition you are launching. Switch DLC does not carry into the Switch 2 edition automatically.

A practical first-hour plan

  1. Confirm whether your icon and purchase are for the Switch 2 edition or the updated Switch edition.
  2. Open Settings > General > Control Type and test Usual Stuff, then Simple if two-stick steering is uncomfortable.
  3. Read the current in-game control prompts, especially if you intend to use a mouse.
  4. In a solo stage, collect easy objects in an open area before attempting narrow routes.
  5. Use ZR for the magnet, timer or rocket when the relevant item is available.
  6. Before moving a save, check for existing Switch 2 save data and decide which edition’s progress you want to keep.
  7. For KatamariBall, prepare a stick-based scheme, confirm Nintendo Switch Online access and remember that local play and mouse input are unavailable in that mode.

These steps keep the confirmed controls separate from the still-undocumented mouse gestures while addressing the two mistakes most likely to cost progress: transferring into an already-used Switch 2 save and buying DLC for the wrong edition.
