An on-prem log analytics appliance can run an LLM locally, including in an air-gapped environment. The harder question is whether bundling and supporting a model makes sense for that product. A model adds its own security, infrastructure, integration, reliability, and maintenance work, so a vendor may choose to keep it separate. The product team’s actual reason is not established in the available product documentation; the tradeoffs below explain what can shape that decision, not what this vendor chose.
Can an LLM run on-prem or air-gapped?
Yes. Local inference is technically feasible; it is not inherently incompatible with an on-prem deployment. NVIDIA documents an air-gap workflow that stores models locally and validates health and inference without internet access. Google Cloud also describes an open-weight LLM reference architecture for an air-gapped Google Distributed Cloud environment. These examples establish feasibility, not that a particular appliance supports those deployments or that the same design fits every organization.
Air-gapped operation still needs deliberate network controls. NVIDIA’s documentation describes blocking outbound egress while allowing explicitly needed internal services, such as DNS or registry access. That is a possible deployment control, not proof that any given product has no other network behavior. An organization would need to inspect and validate the appliance and its model-serving components.

What changes when the appliance bundles a model?
A bundled LLM is more than a feature toggle. It introduces a model and an inference-serving stack that have to be secured, integrated, operated, and maintained alongside the log analytics product.
Security and data boundaries
Keeping inference local can help keep prompts and log data within an organization’s environment, but local placement does not remove AI security work. NIST describes AI security in terms of confidentiality, integrity, and availability, including the security of the underlying software and hardware. It also notes that existing frameworks do not comprehensively address some AI-specific attacks, such as model extraction, membership inference, evasion, and availability attacks. These are risks to assess, not evidence that every LLM is unsafe.

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary guidance for considering risks and trustworthiness across design, development, use, and evaluation. Its characteristics include validity and reliability, safety, security and resilience, accountability and transparency, privacy enhancement, and management of harmful bias. It offers a way to frame product decisions; it does not require an appliance to include or exclude a model.

Hardware and operations
Inference needs local model storage and a serving deployment, and those components need an owner. Hardware suitability depends on the chosen model and the product’s supported configuration. NIST’s July 2025 initial public draft about a chatbot implementation notes that its team considered model size and hardware fit when selecting an embedding model. That example does not establish a minimum GPU, storage capacity, power draw, staffing level, or cost for this appliance.
Bundling also means deciding who stages model files, handles updates, secures and monitors the serving stack, and diagnoses failures. A vendor that supports the appliance may need to support those components as well; an organization deploying a separate model may instead own that work itself.

An LLM must fit the analytics workflow: what data it can access, which permissions govern that access, and how its output relates to existing queries, alerts, and SIEM tools. CMS’s technical reference architecture discusses correlation and contextualization as well as compatibility with an enterprise SIEM platform. Microsoft’s Azure Log Analytics architecture guidance covers reliability planning, regional deployment, cost models, and operator training. These are examples from particular environments, but they illustrate why a model’s integration and operational ownership matter alongside its ability to generate answers.

Neither approach is automatically better. Compare the concrete product and deployment responsibilities rather than treating “on-prem” as a guarantee of privacy or “bundled” as a guarantee of easier operation.
| Decision area | Bundled with the appliance | Separate local deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Data boundary | Confirm what data the model can access and whether inference and model files remain inside the organization’s environment. | Confirm where inference runs, how model files are staged, and how egress is controlled. NVIDIA documents offline validation and outbound-egress blocking as possible controls. |
| Responsibility | Establish which model and serving-stack updates, security work, monitoring, and support the appliance provider owns. | Assign an internal owner for staging, securing, updating, monitoring, and operating the model and serving stack. |
| Integration | Check compatibility with the appliance’s permissions, analytics workflow, and SIEM environment. | Check how the separate deployment will connect to log data and existing permissions without bypassing the organization’s controls. |
| Reliability and operations | Determine how inference availability and failures affect the appliance’s reliability commitments and support process. | Plan how the separate inference service will be monitored, supported, and staffed. |
| Hardware and cost | Ask for the supported configuration and measured operating costs for the appliance’s actual model option. | Evaluate hardware and operating costs for the chosen model and environment; reference architectures do not provide a universal estimate for this appliance. |
The table identifies questions to verify, not established specifications or capabilities of the appliance in the title. The referenced guidance offers ways to manage AI risk and examples of deployment architectures; none states a universal requirement that an on-prem log analytics appliance bundle an LLM.
What would establish the vendor’s actual reason?
The general tradeoffs do not reveal why this particular product ships without an LLM. A definitive answer would need an approved architecture statement or explanation from the product team. Useful specifics include whether the decision reflects supported hardware, data-boundary requirements, model licensing or update policy, attack-surface and patching commitments, reliability targets, integration work, support ownership, cost, or roadmap priorities. Without that confirmation, attributing any one of these reasons to the vendor would go beyond what is established.
