Le Large, a new contemporary-art center on Île Seguin in Boulogne-Billancourt west of Paris, is scheduled to open on October 17, 2026. Its inaugural exhibition, Imaginary Engine (Moteur imaginaire in French), runs through March 7, 2027, bringing more than 100 works by 55 artists from 23 countries to the former Renault island.

Where Le Large is located

Le Large occupies the upstream tip of Île Seguin, a Seine island administered by Boulogne-Billancourt. It stands opposite La Seine Musicale, the island’s glass concert hall, and forms the cultural anchor of the Pointe des Arts (La Pointe des Arts) redevelopment.

Reports describe the arts center as approximately 5,000 square meters (about 54,000 square feet). The wider Pointe des Arts scheme is reported at roughly 570,000 square feet and includes a performing-arts venue, cinema, sculpture garden, hotel and retail components. Reported investment figures differ by source: Smithsonian Magazine puts the project at about $500 million, while Le Monde reports €450 million.

RCR Arquitectes designed Le Large. Its copper-toned and anodized-aluminum exterior gives the building a deliberately industrial presence while distinguishing it from La Seine Musicale nearby.

Why Île Seguin matters to the opening

Île Seguin was the site of Renault’s original factory for much of the 20th century. More than 30,000 people worked there in the 1930s, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Renault closed the plant in 1992; the abandoned factory structures remained until demolition in 2005.

The island then became the subject of successive cultural, academic and commercial proposals that were abandoned or reshaped. Emerige’s La Pointe des Arts project ultimately advanced the redevelopment. Le Large therefore opens on a site whose industrial memory is not background decoration: the first exhibition directly addresses the relationship between people, machines and mechanical systems.

What is in Imaginary Engine?

Curator Cecilia Alemani organized Imaginary Engine in five thematic chapters. The show examines how industrial constraints and mechanical language have influenced artistic practice across different media. The earliest works date from the 1930s, linking the exhibition’s historical range to the era when Renault’s island factory was at full scale.

The exhibition is not presented as a Renault-car display. Instead, automobiles and factory production provide a point of departure for a broader investigation of human-machine relationships, labor, movement and technological imagination. The commissioning program also means that visitors will see works made for this institution’s first public moment, alongside older pieces reaching back to the 1930s.

Film screenings extend the car theme

A related film program uses cinema to continue the exhibition’s automotive and human-machine questions. Announced examples include The Blues Brothers, Thelma & Louise and Taxi Tehran, with a focus on iconic cars and car-chase sequences. Screening dates, times and any booking requirements should be checked with Le Large’s official program when they are published; the available announcements do not establish ticket prices.

Who can visit free?

Large has stated that 40 percent of its public-facing space is intended to be free to access. Visitors aged 26 or younger are also intended to enter free. These are access policies rather than a published full admission schedule, and no official general ticket price was established in the announcements available for the opening.

The institution plans rotating temporary exhibitions, so the free-space proportion and youth policy are likely to matter beyond the inaugural show. Visitors planning a specific date should confirm opening hours, reservations and film admission rules directly with the center once its visitor information is live.

What the name “Large” means

The name references the French expression prendre le large, literally “to set sail.” Large uses that wordplay as an invitation to shift perspective and broaden horizons. Its president, Laurent Dumas, has described the institution as a place where art’s ability to change how people see and understand the world should be shared widely.

Alemani has similarly emphasized the significance of opening a new institution on an island with such a charged history. The contrast is central to the project: a brand-new building rises where the Renault factory once stood, while the opening exhibition asks how machines have shaped modern life and artistic thought.

What to know before planning a visit

  1. Choose the date: the public opening is scheduled for October 17, 2026; Imaginary Engine closes March 7, 2027.
  2. Check the program: confirm exhibition hours and any separate reservations for the film screenings.
  3. Verify admission: under-26 visitors are planned to enter free, and 40 percent of public-facing space is intended to be free, but the complete ticket schedule has not been published.
  4. Allow time for the island: Le Large is part of a larger cultural district with La Seine Musicale and planned cinema, sculpture-garden, hospitality and retail elements.
  5. Read the site in context: the exhibition’s machine theme gains meaning from Île Seguin’s former Renault workforce, factory buildings and long redevelopment.
