Arthur Blank did not rush into the National Women’s Soccer League. The league approached him during an earlier expansion process, then left the decision with him. In November 2025, after years of discussions, Blank’s ownership group was officially awarded Atlanta City FC. NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman described the choice as a matter of timing, not persuasion: “You let us know when you’re ready to do this with us.”
Why Blank finally brought an NWSL team to Atlanta
The Atlanta franchise grew out of a long courtship between the league and Blank. Berman said NWSL officials had met with him several years earlier while evaluating expansion opportunities. Rather than set an artificial deadline, the league waited for Blank to decide that he could commit the necessary attention, resources and operating plan.
Blank’s existing sports portfolio made Atlanta a particularly attractive market. He invested in Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United, whose launch established a high local standard for match presentation, community engagement and stadium operations. The Blank family’s reputation for community-oriented ownership also shaped the NWSL’s expectations. Berman summarized that record by saying, “They’re under promisers and over deliverers.”

That history does not guarantee Atlanta City FC’s success, but it gives the club an established ownership infrastructure to build on. The league is treating the franchise as a deliberate expansion of its commercial and community footprint, rather than as a one-off announcement.

What the NWSL told Arthur Blank about expansion
Berman’s account explains why the announcement took time. The league’s message was: “You let us know when you’re ready to do this with us.” That approach placed ownership readiness ahead of a race to add another market.
Blank’s eventual decision came with a public launch designed to demonstrate local demand. He said the Atlanta City FC brand launch on a Sunday attracted approximately 15,000 people and was five times larger than any previous NWSL brand launch. That attendance figure was presented during the panel discussion and has not been independently audited, so it should be read as Blank’s reported estimate rather than an official league attendance record.

How many NWSL teams will there be?
Atlanta City FC is described as club No. 17, while an unnamed Columbus club is club No. 18. Those additions follow Boston Legacy FC and Denver Summit FC, which are scheduled to begin play in 2026 as clubs 15 and 16.

The Columbus team’s name and other launch details were not provided in the panel coverage. The sequence means the NWSL is moving toward an 18-club competition, assuming the announced additions proceed as described.

What Atlanta says about the growth of women’s soccer
The Atlanta announcement is part of a broader acceleration in the NWSL’s scale and business profile. Panel coverage reported that the average NWSL club valuation had grown threefold in a couple of years. The report did not publish the underlying calculation or a club-by-club valuation table, so the figure is best understood as a league-level statement rather than a independently verified market index.
The reported launch turnout offers a second signal: a women’s professional team can generate a large event audience before playing its first competitive match. For Atlanta, the challenge will be converting that launch interest into season-ticket commitments, recurring attendance, supporter culture and youth-soccer connections. A large opening event is an indicator of attention, not proof of long-term demand.

Why the NWSL is being compared with MLS and the WNBA
Comparisons with MLS and the WNBA arise because all three leagues have expanded by pairing national competition with strong local ownership groups and recognizable market identities. Atlanta United provides Blank’s most relevant precedent: an ownership group using an existing sports operation, a major-city audience and community assets to establish a new club.

The NWSL’s expansion timetable, player contracts, media arrangements and competitive structure are distinct from those of MLS and the WNBA. Atlanta City FC therefore should be judged on NWSL-specific measures—player development, match attendance, supporter retention, commercial partnerships and community participation—rather than on whether it immediately reproduces another league’s business model.

The league’s next challenge: making more players household names
Berman said expansion must be accompanied by greater player visibility. Trinity Rodman is already widely recognized, but the commissioner argued that the league needs many more players to become familiar to the general public. Her target is a deeper group of iconic or generational names, particularly with the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled for the United States.
That visibility affects Atlanta’s opportunity. A new club can help introduce stars to a large sports market, but it also needs league-wide storytelling, accessible broadcasts and sustained promotion of players beyond the most established names. More recognizable players can strengthen attendance and sponsorship interest across all 18 clubs, not only in Atlanta.
What is the Crest Cup?
U.S. Soccer has announced the Crest Cup, a competition named for Blank and modeled on the U.S. Open Cup. The announcement did not include a start date. Its format, participating teams and relationship to the NWSL season therefore remain unspecified in the available coverage.
The competition links Blank’s ownership profile to a broader U.S. soccer project, but it should not be treated as evidence that Atlanta City FC has already played in, qualified for or scheduled a Crest Cup match.
What happens next for Atlanta City FC
- Atlanta must turn the brand launch into a durable fan base rather than rely on one event’s estimated attendance.
- The ownership group will need to announce the club’s competitive timeline, venue arrangements, roster-building plans and supporter details.
- The NWSL will need to coordinate Atlanta’s arrival with Boston, Denver and Columbus as it approaches an 18-club league.
- Both club and league will be measured by recurring engagement and player recognition, not expansion headlines alone.
For now, the central fact is the patience behind the expansion. The NWSL wanted Blank involved, but waited until he was ready to build Atlanta City FC on his ownership group’s terms. The November 2025 award and the reported 15,000-person launch show how that decision has become part of the league’s larger push for scale.
