Yes, an AI feature can work in airplane mode—but only if its model and inference runtime are available on your device and the task does not require a remote service. Airplane mode cuts the network connection; it does not turn a cloud-based feature into local AI. Even when the AI calculation runs on your phone, sign-in, syncing, current web results, or other app functions may still need internet access.
Why an AI feature stops working in airplane mode
Many apps send your prompt or request to a server, where a model generates a result. Without a network path, that request cannot reach the model, so the feature fails or becomes unavailable. By contrast, on-device AI runs inference—the step that produces an answer—using a model available on your phone.
Apple describes Core AI as an on-device route that can work offline, and Google documents offline AICore features such as summarization and smart replies. Those are platform capabilities, not a guarantee that every app using AI works without a connection. A writing assistant might proofread offline while a web-search answer, conversation sync, or remote API call in the same app does not.

- A local model: It must already be on the device or be managed there by the operating system. Some developers bundle model files; others download them when the app is set up or first used.
- A compatible runtime and device: The phone, operating system, and processor must support the model and the app’s chosen inference route.
- An offline-capable task: The requested operation must not depend on a server—for example, to retrieve current information, verify an account, or sync data.
Apple’s Core AI integration documentation says developers can bundle an .aimodel in an Xcode project or Swift package, or download it at runtime. If a model is delivered by download, get it before disconnecting. Google’s AICore manages on-device models on supported Android devices, but the particular features available vary by device and manufacturer.

What on-device AI does—and does not—mean for privacy
Keeping inference on a device can mean the data used for that task does not need to be sent to a model server. Google says supported AICore tasks are processed locally and task data is not sent to the cloud or shared over the internet. That statement applies to those documented AICore features; it does not establish that every part of an app is offline or that no telemetry, backup, sync, or model download uses a network.
Apple likewise describes on-device inference as a way to keep data private. For any particular app, the relevant question is which operation stays local and what other app functions transmit data. “On-device AI” is not, by itself, a blanket privacy guarantee.
Which phones and developer routes support it?
Android AICore
Google says AICore is available on devices running Android 14 or higher, but availability of individual features varies by device and manufacturer. Its documented offline examples include text summarization and smart replies. AICore can update models in the background; Google says a device may temporarily retain old and new versions for up to three days while an update is checked, which can increase storage use during that period.

Apple Core AI and Core ML
Apple’s Core AI documentation describes inference on Apple silicon without a server dependency for that inference path. Developers may bundle a model or download it at runtime. Apple’s Xcode integration requires the Metal Toolchain, which is not installed by default; this is a developer setup requirement, not something an end user needs to install.
Apple’s Core ML documentation describes optimization for the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, and on-device execution that does not require a network connection. Apple currently points developers working with newer architectures and inference techniques toward Core AI.
Google LiteRT and LiteRT-LM
Google presents LiteRT as an on-device inference framework and LiteRT-LM as an orchestration layer for large language model workloads, including conversation management, streaming output, multimodal inputs, and tool use. The stack spans several platforms, but individual APIs and availability differ. Google’s LiteRT Android example states Android API 24 or higher; that requirement should not be confused with AICore’s Android 14-and-higher availability, because they are separate routes.

Google’s AI Edge Gallery is an experimental showcase app for running generative AI offline with LiteRT-LM. Its experimental status makes it a demonstration and learning option, not a support guarantee for every phone or user.
Local models still use storage and device resources
Offline does not mean unlimited. Google’s LiteRT-LM overview, accessed in 2026, lists these model file sizes. They are model sizes, not the total installed footprint of an app or runtime.
| Model variant | Google-listed file size |
|---|---|
| EmbeddingGemma 2, 740M Omnimodal | 485 MB |
| EmbeddingGemma 2, 440M Text-Vision | 388 MB |
| EmbeddingGemma 2, 270M Text | 165 MB |
| Gemma-4-E2B | 2.58 GB |
Actual storage needs can include additional app and runtime files, and a model update may temporarily require space for more than one version. The size of the model alone does not establish how much memory a task needs or how quickly it will run.

How to check whether a feature will work before you go offline
- Identify the specific task. Separate the AI calculation from surrounding functions such as web retrieval, sign-in, account checks, and syncing.
- Check the app’s offline and device requirements. Look for whether the feature runs on-device, which phone and OS versions it supports, and whether the whole task or only inference works offline.
- Complete setup while connected. Open the feature and allow any required model download or update to finish before enabling airplane mode.
- Test the same task offline. Enable airplane mode and try the operation you intend to use. A successful local response does not prove that other app features will work offline.
- Leave room for model storage and updates. Check available device storage, especially if the app or operating system manages model updates.
Why performance claims need context
Local inference performance depends on the model, workload, device, and hardware backend. Google’s benchmark pages list, for example, 8.3 ms text latency for Gemma-4-E2B on a Pixel 11 Pro using the TPU, and 56 tokens per second GPU decode for Gemma-4-E2B on an iPhone 17 Pro in a separate workload table. These are Google-published results for named configurations, not independent tests or promises for other apps, devices, or tasks.
When evaluating a feature, consider whether it completes the task you need, which devices and operating systems it supports, how its model is delivered, how much storage it uses, and which parts of the workflow still require a connection. A result from one model/backend combination cannot establish speed, answer quality, battery use, or availability across the board.
