The On Cloudboom Volt is best understood as a plated fast-training shoe that can handle race efforts, rather than a shoe whose clearest advantage is all-out race-day speed. In Tom’s Guide reviewer Nick Harris-Fry’s 40-mile test, it felt firm, nimble and comfortable across varied workouts, but lacked the pronounced bounce and propulsion he wanted for his fastest racing. It is most compelling for runners who prefer a firmer ride and want one shoe for quick training and occasional racing.
What kind of shoe is the Cloudboom Volt?
The Volt is a neutral road-running shoe with two layers of On Helion HF foam and a carbon-infused Speedboard. On also describes CloudTec cushioning and a rocker, and positions the shoe for race day, specifically naming 5–10K and half-marathon distances on its U.S. men’s product listing.
A carbon plate does not, by itself, make a shoe feel highly springy or especially aggressive. Harris-Fry’s test impression was a firmer, more traditional-feeling platform with quick transitions: nimble enough for speedwork, but not especially bouncy. That distinction matters if you are choosing it based on the word “plated” alone.

Harris-Fry’s Tom’s Guide review, published August 30, 2026, identifies 40 miles of overall testing. He used the Volt for easy daily running, short and long repetitions, a day with two workouts, and racing efforts that totaled about 20 miles in one day. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison or a prediction of how every runner will respond.

A firm ride with quick transitions
He found the foam firmer than in other On shoes he had run in. The combination of that feel, the carbon-infused plate and a mild rocker made the shoe feel quick through transitions without producing the conspicuous bounce or propulsion he expected from a more aggressive racer. He called it “an accomplished fast training shoe.”
Comfort and stability beyond fast running
Despite its speed-oriented design, Harris-Fry found the Volt stable enough for easy paces and comfortable for longer workouts. He reported racing up to roughly 20 miles in one day during his test. This supports its versatility in his use; it does not establish that it will suit every runner for long distances or replace a dedicated daily trainer.

Upper, grip and fit in the test
Harris-Fry described the mesh upper as breathable and secure, with no rubbing during his runs. His usual size fit well, though he found the toe area slightly tighter than on more cushioned On shoes. He also reported broad rubber outsole coverage and good grip on wet roads. Those are individual observations, not guarantees about fit or traction for other runners.

- Fast-training runners who prefer firmness: The ride may suit you if you want a plated shoe for repetitions and quicker sessions but do not want a very soft or highly springy feel.
- Runners who value workout versatility: In Harris-Fry’s test, the Volt was usable for easy running as well as speedwork and longer workouts, making it a plausible choice if you want a fast shoe that is not limited to race efforts.
- Runners considering it for racing: On positions it for race day and names 5–10K and half-marathon use on its U.S. men’s listing. Harris-Fry did race in it, but his review’s strongest endorsement was for fast training rather than its advantage in a race.
Who may want a different ride?
If your priority is the lightest-feeling, most propulsive option for a personal-best attempt, the Volt may not be the best match. Harris-Fry found it heavier than he expected from a plated short-distance racer and less aggressive than the racing shoes he prefers for his fastest efforts. That is a preference-based assessment, not evidence that the Volt cannot be raced.

Doctors of Running’s April 7, 2026 review also characterizes the foam as firm and questions its resilience at faster paces, while noting that the firmer platform may suit easier running or recreational runners who like that feel. Its testers report different fit experiences, including variations in toe room, a snug midfoot and rearfoot, and heel-counter sensitivity. These are tester-specific fit reports; they do not establish a universal sizing problem.
Cloudboom Volt specifications: why the published numbers differ
Published figures are not all measured or listed on the same basis. On’s press announcement gives size-specific weight and stack figures; its U.S. product listing gives a different drop figure. Tom’s Guide and Doctors of Running also publish their own figures. Treat them as source-specific rather than combining them into a single definitive specification.

On’s U.S. listing calls the shoe “Made for race day.” Its listed 5 mm drop and regular, true-to-size fit guidance apply to that product listing. The differing 4 mm figure and stack measurements belong to On’s press announcement, while Doctors of Running’s stack figures are based on Running Warehouse measurements. The available figures therefore should not be treated as measurements taken under one shared method.

Is the Cloudboom Volt worth $200?
On’s U.S. men’s product listing showed a price of $200 when accessed October 7, 2026; the price and availability can change. Tom’s Guide reported launch prices of $200 in the U.S. and £190 in the U.K. in February 2026. Whether that represents good value depends on what you want: its case is strongest if you want a firm, plated shoe for varied fast training and may also race in it. If race-day propulsion is your primary reason to buy, Harris-Fry’s account gives less reason to choose it over a more aggressive option.

Harris-Fry named the Adidas Adizero Evo SL as a lower-cost fast-training alternative, the New Balance SC Rebel v1 as a springier plated option, and the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3, Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo and On Cloudboom Strike 2 as more aggressive race-day possibilities. These are alternatives he identified in his review, not the results of a controlled head-to-head test or an independent ranking.
How to decide if it suits you
- Decide what job the shoe needs to do. If you mainly want a versatile fast trainer, the Volt’s firm ride and workout range align with Harris-Fry’s strongest findings. If you mainly want maximum race-day propulsion, his main caveat is directly relevant.
- Think about your preferred cushioning feel. The reviewers describe a firm platform rather than a notably soft or bouncy one. A preference for that feel is more informative than the plate alone.
- Check fit in the areas that matter to you. On’s U.S. listing says regular and true to size, while reviewer fit reports include tighter toe space and, at Doctors of Running, variation in midfoot, rearfoot and heel-counter comfort. Try your usual size if possible, especially if you need extra toe room or are sensitive to heel pressure.
- Weigh the price against your use. At the cited $200 U.S. listing price, the shoe makes the most sense if you expect to use its speed for more than occasional races. Check the current listing for your market before buying.
What the reviews do—and do not—establish
Harris-Fry’s 40-mile account and Doctors of Running’s review offer useful but individual assessments of feel and fit; neither establishes universal performance or injury outcomes. The cited sources provide no population-level evidence that the Volt reduces injury risk, improves running economy or makes runners faster. RTINGS’ Cloudboom Volt review was published June 19, 2026 and updated through August 7, 2026; because its use-case scores and test record can change, check its current page rather than treating score boxes as timeless or directly comparable with a reviewer’s mileage account.
