The OM System PEN is a compact, retro-styled Micro Four Thirds camera best suited to travel and everyday still photography. Its 20.4MP sensor, in-body image stabilization and phase-detection autofocus give it modern essentials, but its small body cannot keep every lens compact, and its video autofocus is less dependable. DPReview’s verdict—“somewhat throwback, for better and worse”—captures the trade-off: appealing stills-first design, with limits that matter if you want a do-everything camera. (DPReview)
What the OM System PEN is—and what it is not
The PEN is a 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera with a compact, rangefinder-style body. Its retro appearance nods to the PEN line, but DPReview says it is not a like-for-like successor to the 2016 PEN-F. It is more useful to think of it as a modern, portable stills camera than as a replacement for that particular model. (DPReview)
The design’s appeal is practical as well as nostalgic: a smaller camera body is easier to carry for routine outings and travel. The catch is that the lens is part of the camera you carry. A compact body paired with a larger lens may no longer feel like a particularly small system.
How it performs for still photography
DPReview lists a 20.4MP Four Thirds CMOS sensor, in-body image stabilization rated at 5.5EV, and on-sensor phase-detection autofocus with recognition for people, dogs and cats. These features make the PEN more than a retro-styled point-and-shoot: it offers interchangeable-lens flexibility and stabilization in the body. The 5.5EV figure is the stabilization rating reported by DPReview, not a guarantee that every handheld shot will be sharp. (DPReview)
#1 Best Overall
- Compact and Weather-Sealed Design: 518g camera-and-lens kit with IPX1-rated weather sealing provides added protection when shooting in rain
- Intuitive Camera Controls: A viewfinder, shutter button, dial-based operation and interchangeable lenses give you a dedicated camera shooting experience
- Creative In-Camera Controls: Color, monochrome and CP-button controls make it easier to create distinctive looks in-camera
- Image Stabilization Technology: Image stabilisation supports steadier handheld shooting while keeping the kit compact
- Advanced Autofocus System: AI Human and Pet Detection AF helps you concentrate on the moment when photographing people and pets
For fast sequences, DPReview lists a maximum burst rate of up to 30 frames per second with autofocus and exposure locked. That condition matters: the headline rate is not a promise of continuous AF and AE tracking at 30fps. The camera also has a 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder. (DPReview)
OM SYSTEM describes the sensor as a 20.4MP Live MOS sensor, and specifies on-chip all-cross-type phase-detection autofocus and USB charging. Those are manufacturer-stated features; they should be distinguished from DPReview’s independent assessment of how the camera suits different kinds of shooting. (OM SYSTEM)

Video is the clearest compromise
The PEN records 4K video at up to 30fps and C4K at 24fps in 8-bit, according to TechRadar. More important for many buyers, DPReview found its video autofocus less dependable and cautioned against choosing it if you expect to shoot a lot of video. The stated recording formats may be adequate for occasional clips, but they do not outweigh that autofocus concern for a video-first buyer. (TechRadar) (DPReview)
Lens choice determines whether the kit stays compact
The PEN accepts Micro Four Thirds lenses, so the body is only one part of the buying decision. The cited examples include an OM System 14–42mm f/3.5–5.6 III kit lens and an Olympus 45mm f/1.8. A kit zoom provides a general-purpose starting point; a lens such as the 45mm changes both the kind of images you can make and the size and cost of the setup. Check the listing carefully: a camera body and a body-plus-lens kit are different configurations, and bundle contents can vary by seller and region. (OM SYSTEM) (TechRadar)

- The compact 393g body is easy to carry for travel, everyday life and spontaneous photography.
- A viewfinder, shutter button, dial-based operation and interchangeable lenses give you a dedicated and intuitive camera shooting experience.
- Color, monochrome and CP-button controls make it easier to create distinctive looks in-camera.
- Image stabilisation supports steadier handheld shooting while keeping the kit compact.
- AI Human and Pet Detection AF helps you concentrate on the moment when photographing people and pets.
This is the central portability trade-off. If you want the smallest practical carry, choose the lens as deliberately as the body. If your preferred work requires larger or longer lenses, the PEN’s compact dimensions alone do not ensure a light, unobtrusive kit.

Who should consider the PEN?
- A good fit: someone seeking a compact interchangeable-lens camera for travel or everyday still photography, who values a retro rangefinder-style body and in-body stabilization.
- Think carefully: someone whose lens choices could erase the size advantage, or who needs a particular lens bundle. Confirm the exact kit and total local cost.
- Look elsewhere: someone planning frequent video work who depends on reliable video autofocus, or someone whose needs center on demanding action or long-lens shooting. The cited review evidence establishes an everyday/travel stills orientation, not a blanket endorsement for those more specialized uses.
