Buy the M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 if you want a genuinely compact, light and affordable 90mm-equivalent portrait prime and normally have adequate light. Choose the 45mm f/1.2 PRO if you regularly photograph people in dim conditions, need the thinnest practical depth of field, work in rain or dust, or will use its focus clutch and programmable button. Both lenses frame a subject similarly; the decision is mainly about one stop of light, rendering at wide apertures, handling, protection and the amount of weight you are willing to carry.

At a glance: the differences that decide the purchase

Both lenses are 45mm Micro Four Thirds primes. On a Micro Four Thirds camera, that focal length gives the same 90mm-equivalent field of view in 35mm terms and a 27° angle of view. If you stand in the same place and focus at the same distance, a head-and-shoulders composition will be very similar with either lens.

The PRO weighs about 3.5 times as much as the bare f/1.8 lens. That is a meaningful difference on a small camera body, not a specification you notice only on a spreadsheet. Current transaction prices were not established here, so there is no responsible current price or fixed price ratio to quote. Treat the f/1.8 as the value and portability choice, and the PRO as a premium tool whose benefits matter most when you actually shoot at f/1.2 or need its construction and controls.

What the shared 45mm focal length means for portraits

A 45mm lens on Micro Four Thirds is often described as a 90mm-equivalent lens because the sensor format changes the angle of view compared with 35mm film or a full-frame digital camera. The equivalent figure describes framing, not a change in the lens’s physical focal length. Both lenses therefore offer the same working distance and perspective when you use them from the same position.

That perspective is useful for portraits because you can fill the frame without standing extremely close to a person’s face. A little distance helps avoid the exaggerated nose and facial-feature proportions that can appear with a very wide lens used close to the subject. The 45mm pair also works for details, stage performances and compressed views of travel scenes, but its shared design purpose is portrait work.

Neither lens is a zoom. You change the composition by moving, while the fixed focal length keeps the visual relationship between foreground and background consistent from one frame to the next. Since the framing is so similar, choosing between these two models is not a choice between two portrait perspectives; it is a choice between two versions of the same perspective.

One stop of aperture: what f/1.2 changes in practice

More exposure in dim light

f/1.2 is one stop wider than f/1.8. At the same shutter speed, the PRO can put twice as much light on the sensor. Alternatively, you can use a shutter speed twice as fast at the same ISO, or reduce ISO by one stop while keeping the shutter speed unchanged. That extra margin can help when you are photographing a moving person indoors, working under available light or trying to keep a handheld frame sharp near dusk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advantage is not a guarantee of sharp photographs. A subject who moves between frames can still require a faster shutter, and the camera’s autofocus system, your technique and the available light remain important. The wider aperture simply gives you another stop to spend on shutter speed or noise before you need to add light or change position.

Shallower depth of field and stronger separation

At the same focus distance, f/1.2 produces a shallower depth of field than f/1.8. The background can become less distinct and the transition from the focused subject to the blur can look smoother. This is especially visible in a head-and-shoulders portrait with distant lights, foliage or architectural detail behind the subject.

The difference is conditional. If you stop both lenses down to the same aperture, the PRO no longer has an aperture advantage at that setting. A photographer who normally works at f/2.8 or smaller will see less reason to accept the PRO’s size and weight. The f/1.8 can already produce substantial background blur at a 90mm-equivalent angle of view when you position the subject away from the background.

Exposure is not the only reason to open up

Wide-open shooting also changes the visual style of a portrait. Mirrorless Comparison’s side-by-side review reported smoother transitions and stronger subject separation from the PRO at f/1.2. The same review said the bokeh difference was not significant when both lenses were used at f/1.8. Those observations came from a hands-on comparison on an Olympus E-M1, so they are useful practical evidence rather than a universal laboratory result for every camera body, distance or subject.

Sharpness and rendering: where the PRO earns its premium

In that side-by-side test, the PRO was sharper at the widest aperture settings. This is the situation in which its optical design has the clearest benefit: you can shoot close to f/1.2 while retaining more detail in the focused part of the frame. The reviewer found the two lenses nearly indistinguishable for sharpness at f/2.8 and beyond.

That result creates a straightforward decision rule. If you buy the PRO and routinely use f/1.2 or f/1.4, its optical advantage is relevant. If your workflow normally involves f/2.8 or smaller for more depth of field, the reported sharpness gap largely disappears and the compact lens may deliver more practical value because it is easier to carry and use.

Portrait sharpness should not be confused with an obligation to make every eyelash maximally crisp. Some photographers prefer a gentler rendering at wide apertures, while others want high detail in the eye nearest the camera. The review’s findings tell you where the PRO performed better in that particular comparison; they do not dictate an aesthetic choice.

Size, weight and everyday handling

The 45mm f/1.8: a lens you can leave on the camera

The f/1.8 measures 56 × 46mm and weighs 116g. Its 37mm filter thread also keeps compatible filters physically small. On a compact Micro Four Thirds body, the combination is easy to carry for a day of walking, travel or family events. The low mass reduces the temptation to leave a portrait lens at home and makes the kit less tiring when the camera hangs from a strap for hours.

The trade-off is a simpler control layout. The lens has a focus ring, but the documented feature set does not include the PRO’s focus clutch or programmable function button. If you prefer to make all changes through the camera body and want the smallest possible kit, that simplicity is an advantage rather than a missing feature.

The 45mm f/1.2 PRO: a larger, more deliberate tool

The PRO measures 70 × 84.9mm and weighs 410g before adding its hood and cap. Its 62mm filter thread requires larger filters than the f/1.8. The extra glass and barrel size make the lens more conspicuous on a small body and can shift the balance toward the front of the camera. A hand strap, larger grip or a camera body with a substantial grip can make that combination more comfortable during long sessions.

The PRO includes a hood and adds two controls that can change how quickly you work. Pulling the focus clutch exposes a mechanical manual-focus scale and changes the focusing operation according to the lens design. The programmable lens button can be assigned a camera function, such as autofocus lock, subject detection or another control supported by your body. Exact assignments depend on the camera model and firmware, so check your camera’s manual before planning a custom workflow.

Weather protection: useful protection, not waterproofing

OM SYSTEM describes the 45mm f/1.2 PRO as splashproof and dustproof. That construction is relevant when a portrait session may encounter light rain, spray, dust or rapidly changing outdoor conditions, provided the camera body and the rest of the system offer compatible protection. The independent comparison lists no weather sealing for the f/1.8.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Splashproof” and “dustproof” do not mean waterproof. Do not submerge either lens, expose it to a sustained downpour without protection or assume that a sealed lens makes an unsealed camera body safe. Keep the mount, contacts and filter area dry, follow the camera maker’s handling guidance and use a cover when conditions exceed incidental exposure.

For indoor studio portraits, controlled homes and fair-weather travel, the PRO’s sealing may never affect a photograph. For outdoor professionals who cannot reschedule around weather, it can be a risk-management feature that justifies carrying the larger lens.

Focusing, close work and autofocus behavior

Minimum focusing distance

The official Japanese f/1.8 specification lists a 0.5m minimum focusing distance. The PRO manual also lists 0.5m. At that distance, the lenses can frame smaller details than they can from a typical standing portrait position, but neither should be treated as a dedicated macro lens.

An OM SYSTEM US product page surfaced a conflicting 0.2m figure for the PRO. Because the measurement convention or listing may differ, the conservative, documented figure for planning close work is 0.5m. If a 0.2m capability is critical to your purchase, confirm the current specification with OM SYSTEM and verify how the distance is measured before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Magnification and aperture range of the f/1.8

OM SYSTEM’s official f/1.8 specifications give a maximum magnification of 0.11× actual, or 0.22× in 35mm-equivalent terms. The listed aperture range is f/1.8–f/22, and the diaphragm uses seven blades in a circular arrangement. Those figures help explain its role: it is a portrait prime that can focus on moderately close subjects, not a high-magnification lens for filling the frame with a tiny object.

Autofocus in the comparison test

On an Olympus OM-D E-M1, Mirrorless Comparison reported that both lenses focused quickly and quietly in single-autofocus and continuous-autofocus modes. Performance deteriorated in low-contrast or poor light, which the reviewer attributed mainly to the camera’s autofocus system. Do not generalize that result to every Micro Four Thirds body; autofocus speed and tracking depend on the camera, firmware, subject pattern and light level.

Flare and backlit scenes

The same reviewer found that both lenses could flare or show ghosting when pointed toward the sun despite their coatings. Use the supplied hood with the PRO, shade the front element with your hand when appropriate and change the angle slightly if contrast drops. A hood cannot eliminate every artifact in a direct-backlight composition, and the f/1.8 does not become flare-proof simply because it is the smaller lens.

Which lens fits your shooting pattern?

Choose the 45mm f/1.8 when portability is the priority

  • You want a 90mm-equivalent prime that adds only 116g to your kit.
  • You travel, walk, attend family events or carry several lenses and want the smallest portrait option.
  • You usually have adequate light or normally stop down for more depth of field.
  • Your camera bag or lens budget leaves little room for a large premium optic.
  • You do not need weather protection, a focus clutch or a programmable lens button.

For these photographers, the f/1.8 is not a compromised placeholder. Its focal length is identical to the PRO’s, and the independent comparison found the pair nearly indistinguishable for sharpness at f/2.8 and beyond. The lighter lens is more likely to be with you when a portrait opportunity appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the 45mm f/1.2 PRO when wide-open performance matters

  • You regularly shoot portraits at or near f/1.2 for subject separation.
  • You work in available light and can use an extra stop of exposure.
  • You need the PRO’s reported wide-aperture sharpness and smoother transitions.
  • You photograph outdoors in conditions where splashproof and dustproof construction is valuable.
  • You will use a focus clutch, programmable button and supplied hood in a repeatable professional workflow.
  • You accept carrying 410g plus the hood and cap, along with a larger 62mm filter system.

The PRO’s benefits are concentrated at the settings and conditions above. If none of them describes your work, its extra mass is likely to be a daily penalty rather than a productive investment.

A practical decision process before you buy

  1. Look at your actual aperture history. Review recent portrait files and note how often you shoot wider than f/2.8. Frequent wide-open work favors the PRO; mostly stopped-down work favors the f/1.8.
  2. Decide whether one extra stop changes your shutter or ISO choices. If your subjects move in dim rooms or you avoid raising ISO, f/1.2 gives you one additional stop. If you normally add light or use a tripod, the advantage may be less important.
  3. Weigh the complete carry system. Compare your camera body, strap, hood and filters—not just the lens barrel. The PRO’s 410g excludes its hood and cap, while the f/1.8’s 116g specification is for the lens itself.
  4. Identify your weather exposure. Occasional fair-weather portraits do not require the PRO’s splashproof and dustproof description. Regular work in uncertain weather may justify it, but protect the entire camera system.
  5. Check your camera’s controls and autofocus support. Confirm that your body can assign the lens button as you expect and that its autofocus performance suits your subjects. The E-M1 test is not a promise for every body.
  6. Confirm close-focus requirements. Use 0.5m as the documented planning figure for both lenses unless OM SYSTEM confirms a different convention for the PRO. If you need true macro magnification, neither lens is the obvious solution.
  7. Calculate accessory compatibility. The f/1.8 uses 37mm filters; the PRO uses 62mm filters. Existing filters, step-up rings and your preferred hood strategy can affect the real cost and convenience.

What neither lens changes

Both options retain the same 45mm perspective, so moving from one to the other will not give you a wider portrait or let you stand farther away for a different composition. Neither is waterproof, neither replaces a macro lens, and neither guarantees perfect autofocus in low-contrast scenes. The PRO’s wider aperture can reduce depth of field enough that focusing on the nearer eye becomes more demanding; that is a creative benefit only when you can place focus accurately.

The lenses also share the practical limitation of direct backlight: the comparison found flare or ghosting from both when aimed toward the sun. Lens coatings help but do not remove the need to manage the light.

Bottom-line recommendation

For most Micro Four Thirds photographers choosing a first 90mm-equivalent portrait prime, the 45mm f/1.8 is the sensible default. It delivers the same framing in a 116g, 56 × 46mm package and gives you the most useful result when you value carrying comfort, work in reasonable light or normally stop down.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the 45mm f/1.2 PRO when you have a specific reason to carry a 410g, 70 × 84.9mm lens: frequent f/1.2 shooting, available-light portraits, maximum separation, weather-exposed assignments or a professional workflow that benefits from its controls and protection. Its advantage is real at the widest apertures, but it is not automatically visible in every portrait—especially when both lenses are used at f/2.8 and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do both lenses produce the same portrait perspective?

Yes. Both are 45mm Micro Four Thirds lenses with a 90mm-equivalent field of view and a 27° angle of view. The main differences are aperture, optics, size, weight, protection and controls.

Is the 45mm f/1.2 PRO twice as bright as the f/1.8?

It is one stop faster, which means twice the light at the same shutter speed. You can spend that stop on a faster shutter or a lower ISO, subject to your camera and subject movement.

Is either lens waterproof?

No. OM SYSTEM describes the PRO as splashproof and dustproof. That is environmental protection, not permission to submerge the lens or use it unprotected in sustained heavy rain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which lens is sharper?

Mirrorless Comparison reported better sharpness from the PRO at its widest settings and nearly indistinguishable sharpness from both lenses at f/2.8 and beyond in its Olympus E-M1 comparison. Results can vary with camera, focus distance and technique.

Can I use the same filters on both lenses?

Not directly. The f/1.8 has a 37mm filter thread, while the PRO uses 62mm filters. Step-up rings can adapt sizes, but they add another accessory and may affect hood compatibility.

Are these macro lenses?

No. The f/1.8’s official maximum magnification is 0.11× actual (0.22× in 35mm-equivalent terms), and the documented minimum focusing distance for both lenses is 0.5m. They are portrait primes with useful close-focus capability, not dedicated macro optics.
