AMD documents ROCm support for the Radeon RX 9060 XT in WSL, but that alone does not establish a working Ollama setup. Ollama’s Linux installer handles WSL2 differently from a standard Linux installation, and its documented GPU list does not currently name this card for native Windows use. The available evidence supports a compatibility explanation—not a first-person installation story or a reproducible recipe—because it does not include the steps or GPU-offload results from an actual install.
What is supported for the RX 9060 XT?
There are two separate compatibility questions: whether AMD supports the card’s ROCm compute stack in WSL, and whether the Ollama build and installation route can use that stack. AMD’s ROCm 7.2.1 WSL compatibility matrix lists the RX 9060 XT. For that matrix, the listed pairing includes Adrenalin Edition 26.1.1 for WSL2 and either Ubuntu 24.04.2 or Ubuntu 22.04 with WSL2 Linux kernel 5.15. See AMD’s ROCm 7.2.1 WSL compatibility matrix.
That is AMD’s WSL support statement, not proof that Ollama automatically detects or uses the GPU. Ollama’s Linux GPU documentation says, “Ollama requires the AMD ROCm v7 driver on Linux,” and lists the RX 9060 XT for Linux ROCm support. Its current Windows AMD ROCm card list does not include the RX 9060 XT. The Linux-in-WSL route and Ollama’s native Windows route should therefore be treated as distinct setups, not interchangeable evidence of support. See Ollama’s GPU documentation.
Why AMD’s WSL support may not translate into Ollama GPU use
AMD describes ROCDXG as a user-mode library that enables ROCm compute in WSL. Its WSL guide says production support is being introduced with Adrenalin 26.2.2 plus ROCm 7.2.1. Those release details come from a separate statement than the ROCm 7.2.1 compatibility matrix pairing above; do not combine them into a single recipe without checking AMD’s current instructions for the exact release path. See AMD’s WSL guide.

Ollama’s Linux install script has a WSL2-specific branch. It checks for NVIDIA passthrough, then exits before the ordinary Linux AMD detection and ROCm-package installation flow. As a result, relying on the standard Linux installer in WSL does not establish that Ollama’s AMD libraries have been installed or configured. The script’s behavior can change, so inspect the current installer before choosing a setup route: Ollama’s Linux install script.
An Ollama GitHub issue opened June 5, 2026, titled “install.sh: AMD GPU on WSL2 (ROCDXG) not detected — installs CPU-only,” reports one user’s CPU-only result despite ROCm device visibility. It is evidence of a possible packaging failure mode, not proof that every WSL2 AMD installation—or every Ollama release—will behave that way. See Ollama issue #16551.

What a reproducible setup report needs to show
A useful RX 9060 XT guide must identify the versions actually installed and demonstrate GPU use, rather than infer it from AMD’s support matrix or device visibility alone. At minimum, report:
- Windows build and WSL version, plus the Ubuntu release and WSL2 kernel version.
- AMD Windows driver and ROCm/ROCDXG release, with the AMD matrix or installation path that covers that exact combination.
- Ollama version and whether it is the native Windows app or the Linux build inside WSL.
- The exact installation route, including any manual steps needed because the standard installer’s WSL2 branch may skip AMD setup.
- Concrete runtime evidence that Ollama selected the GPU, such as relevant Ollama logs or other runtime output—not just a successful install or a visible ROCm device.
Without those observed details, commands would imply a verified workaround that the available sources do not establish. In particular, the evidence here does not identify a reliably tested manual packaging method or confirm GPU offload on an RX 9060 XT.

How to interpret common checks and failures
Ollama’s troubleshooting guidance calls out driver compatibility and, on Linux, access to /dev/kfd through video or render permissions as AMD GPU discovery considerations. These native Linux device-access details should not be assumed to map one-to-one to WSL’s GPU exposure. If a WSL installation sees a ROCm device but Ollama runs on the CPU, those are separate observations: device visibility does not by itself confirm that Ollama loaded its AMD backend. See Ollama’s troubleshooting guide.
For a native Windows install, Ollama documents AMD support through a ROCm v7/HIP7-capable driver stack or a Vulkan-capable AMD driver, but the RX 9060 XT is not named in its current Windows ROCm list. That absence means the cited documentation does not establish native Windows ROCm support for this card; it does not prove that every other possible configuration is impossible. See Ollama’s GPU documentation.

Which route should you investigate?
| Route | What the documentation establishes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ollama Linux build inside WSL2 | AMD’s ROCm 7.2.1 WSL matrix lists the RX 9060 XT with specified WSL2 driver and Ubuntu/kernel combinations; Ollama lists the card for Linux ROCm. | Ollama’s WSL2 installer branch can bypass ordinary AMD setup. The cited sources do not establish a verified Ollama GPU-offload procedure for this exact setup. |
| Ollama native Windows build | Ollama documents Windows AMD support for qualifying ROCm/HIP or Vulkan driver paths. | The current Windows AMD ROCm card list does not name the RX 9060 XT, so the documentation cited here does not confirm this card’s native Windows ROCm support. |
No performance comparison follows from these support details: the cited material provides no RX 9060 XT Ollama benchmark, tokens-per-second result, or reliability measurement. Treat compatibility as version-specific and confirm the current AMD matrix and Ollama documentation before changing drivers or building a setup around a particular release.
