OLED and LCD panels both need a display-driver IC (DDI), but their DDIs are not interchangeable. An LCD driver controls voltage-driven liquid-crystal cells and works with panel-bias, gamma/VCOM and backlight circuits. An OLED or AMOLED driver controls self-emissive pixels whose brightness depends on accurately managed current, transistor behavior, compensation and panel-specific positive and negative rails. The interface, timing, command set, electrical limits and bonding method must all match the exact panel. A separate AMOLED bias-supply IC, such as Texas Instruments’ TPS65137AS, can provide panel rails but is not an OLED DDI replacement.

What a display-driver IC does

A DDI is the semiconductor between a device’s image-processing electronics and the panel’s individual subpixels. Samsung Display describes it as an “indispensable semiconductor chip to operate each sub-pixels.” It accepts image data from the device CPU (usually through a timing controller), generates the required row and column signals, and controls their timing and electrical levels.

Himax’s 2024 annual report describes the practical result: the driver receives image data from the timing controller and delivers precise analog voltages or currents to create the image. The driver therefore does more than translate a digital pixel value. It sequences rows, converts digital data into analog output levels, manages panel-specific references and bias conditions, and observes the timing and command protocol expected by the glass or flexible panel.

In a conventional active-matrix panel, gate-driver functions select rows while source-driver functions address columns. They may be separate chips, integrated into one device, or partly built into the panel. The DDI may sit on a circuit board or be bonded directly to the panel, depending on size and construction.

The fundamental difference: transmissive LCD versus emissive OLED

How an LCD uses its driver

An LCD pixel does not make light. A backlight shines through liquid-crystal material, and the electric field established by the pixel changes how much of that light passes through the color filter. The source driver applies a controlled voltage to each column; the gate driver selects the row whose thin-film transistors should receive that voltage. Gamma references shape the relationship between a digital gray code and the analog voltage, while VCOM (the common-electrode voltage) helps maintain stable, uniform liquid-crystal behavior.

Because the panel is a light modulator, the LCD system also needs a separate backlight and a driver for its LEDs. Texas Instruments identifies LCD bias supplies, level shifters, gamma/VCOM buffers and backlight LED drivers as distinct support functions. An LCD DDI can control pixel addressing without being the circuit that powers the LEDs behind the panel.

How an OLED uses its driver

An OLED pixel is self-emissive. Current through its organic light-emitting diode produces the light, so a black pixel can be created by stopping emission rather than blocking a common backlight. AMOLED panels still use row and column addressing, but the electrical objective is different: the driver and each pixel’s thin-film transistor circuitry must establish and regulate the current that sets brightness.

Organic devices and their transistor circuits vary substantially by panel process. Compensation schemes correct for transistor-threshold variation, aging and other non-uniformities; the required compensation data, timing and drive waveforms are therefore panel-specific. Power management is also more central because the driver must maintain the positive and negative rails and current conditions that the emissive array expects.

LCD and OLED DDI differences at a glance

Design axis LCD driver IC OLED/AMOLED driver IC
Pixel mechanism Controls liquid-crystal transmission through TFT addressing; a backlight supplies the light. Drives self-emissive OLED pixels; no backlight is required to display black.
Primary analog output Source outputs are column voltages. Gamma references and VCOM behavior are central. Output and compensation are panel-specific, with accurately controlled pixel current and transistor operation.
Typical support rails and blocks AVDD or ±AVDD, VGH, VGL, level shifters, gamma/VCOM buffers and a separate backlight LED driver. Panel-specific positive and negative AMOLED rails; support supplies can use boost, LDO and inverting buck-boost stages.
Touch integration Touch and display driving are often combined as TDDI in small and medium TFT-LCD products. Touch control is typically a discrete controller, according to Himax.
Optical system Image quality depends on the liquid-crystal mode, color filters and backlight stack. Pixels emit their own light, enabling deep black and thin or flexible constructions.
Common bonding context COG or external-board attachment is used according to panel size and design. COF or COP is common in thin and flexible OLED products; the exact attachment remains panel-specific.
Main deployment trade-offs Mature technology with broad size and resolution support; the backlight adds optical and mechanical requirements. Thin, sharp and capable of deep black, but high-temperature reliability, lifetime and cost can constrain some applications.

Inside an LCD driver system

Source and gate operation

The source section converts incoming pixel codes into the column voltages needed by the liquid-crystal cells. The gate section selects one row at a time, allowing the thin-film transistor at each intersection to sample and hold its source voltage. The timing controller coordinates the pixel clock, line timing, frame timing and the order in which source and gate outputs switch.

Gamma and VCOM

Liquid-crystal optical transmission is not linear with voltage. Gamma reference voltages let the source driver map digital gray levels to the intended luminance curve. VCOM establishes the common-electrode reference; errors can appear as flicker, line-to-line differences or image retention. These functions are why an LCD driver’s analog specifications cannot be reduced to a generic “number of pixels” or data-interface description.

Bias and level shifting

TI’s LCD support categories identify AVDD and ±AVDD analog rails, plus VGH and VGL gate-drive rails. Level shifters translate logic-domain timing signals into the higher positive and negative voltages used by the panel’s gate circuitry. The required voltage, sequencing, ripple and current vary with the panel, so the supply specification must be taken from the panel documentation rather than inferred from the connector voltage.

Backlight is a separate path

The LCD DDI addresses the image-forming cells; a backlight LED driver regulates the illumination source. Dimming may be controlled by a PWM or analog signal, but that control path does not make the LED driver part of the pixel DDI. A replacement design must account for both functions.

Inside an OLED or AMOLED driver system

Current-controlled emission

OLED brightness is determined by emission current and the characteristics of the pixel transistor and organic diode. The DDI’s source outputs, timing and compensation data must match the panel’s pixel circuit. A driver with the right resolution but a different current range, compensation algorithm or command sequence can produce incorrect brightness, non-uniformity or no image at all.

Positive and negative panel rails

AMOLED panels commonly require a positive supply and a negative supply for their pixel and gate circuitry. A support power IC may generate these rails from a low-voltage system input, but the actual DDI still performs image-data conversion and row/column control. Rail voltage, startup order, load-transient behavior and protection thresholds are part of the panel’s electrical contract.

Compensation and aging behavior

Active-matrix OLED pixels are not identical over temperature or lifetime. Panel makers use compensation techniques in the pixel circuit, driver, timing controller or calibration data. Because those techniques differ, an OLED DDI is generally designed for a particular panel family rather than as a universal component.

Power rails: what changes between the technologies

Function LCD system AMOLED system
Analog pixel supply AVDD or ±AVDD feeds source-driver and panel analog circuitry. A panel-specific positive rail feeds the AMOLED driver and pixel array.
Gate-drive levels VGH and VGL are identified by TI as LCD panel rails; level shifters create the required logic swing. Positive and negative gate or pixel rails are selected for the OLED pixel circuit and its compensation scheme.
Reference functions Gamma references and VCOM buffers are central to grayscale and common-electrode control. Reference, current-regulation and compensation requirements depend on the OLED panel architecture.
Illumination supply A separate LED backlight driver and LED power path are required. No backlight supply is needed for the emitting pixels.

Do not assume that a panel’s logic input voltage is its only supply requirement. A display can accept low-voltage digital data while needing several higher or negative internal rails. The panel data sheet normally specifies voltage tolerances, sequencing, maximum ripple, load current and power-down behavior.

Can an LCD driver IC be used on an OLED panel?

In practice, no—unless the component was explicitly designed for that exact OLED panel family. The connector, serial interface or nominal logic voltage may look similar, but those details do not establish compatibility. LCD and OLED drivers differ in analog output behavior, bias requirements, timing, command registers and compensation.

The reverse is also true: an OLED DDI cannot normally drive an LCD merely because both receive the same video format. An LCD needs voltage-mode source outputs, gamma/VCOM references and a backlight path; an OLED DDI expects a different pixel circuit and rail arrangement.

Compatibility checklist

  1. Identify the exact panel part number and revision. A similar diagonal size or resolution is not enough; revisions can change timing, pinout and power requirements.
  2. Match the electrical interface. Check the specified MIPI, RGB, LVDS or other interface, lane count, maximum clock, color depth, command set and initialization sequence.
  3. Match timing. Verify horizontal and vertical timings, refresh-rate limits, porch values, frame-memory behavior and synchronization requirements.
  4. Match analog outputs and rails. Compare source/gate voltage or current ranges, AVDD, VGH, VGL, positive and negative AMOLED rails, sequencing and allowable ripple.
  5. Confirm compensation and calibration. OLED panels may require vendor-specific compensation tables or commands; LCD panels require the correct gamma and VCOM settings.
  6. Confirm touch architecture. Determine whether touch is integrated into a TDDI, handled by a separate controller or absent.
  7. Confirm physical attachment. Pinout, bump layout, COG/COF/COP bonding and package dimensions must match the panel assembly.
  8. Check thermal and reliability limits. The driver and panel must meet the intended temperature range, brightness and operating lifetime.

Touch and timing-controller integration

Himax reports that gate and source drivers are often separate, although they may be integrated for small and medium applications. Timing controllers are usually discrete but can also be integrated. In many TFT-LCD products, TDDI combines display driving with in-cell touch sensing. That integration can reduce components and simplify the module, but it creates a panel-specific touch-and-display protocol.

OLED modules more commonly use a discrete touch controller. The display DDI, touch controller and host still have to agree on electrical levels, timing, interrupt behavior and initialization. Substituting a TDDI-oriented LCD part for an OLED display driver would therefore omit functions the OLED module expects.

Package and bonding choices

Samsung identifies three common attachment methods: chip-on-glass (COG), chip-on-film (COF) and chip-on-plastic (COP). COG mounts the IC directly on the glass. COF and COP place the IC on a flexible substrate and support thin, flexible or foldable products. The bonding choice affects mechanical thickness, bend radius, routing and assembly equipment; it is not an interchangeable package option for a finished panel.

For a repair or redesign, inspect the module’s bonded flex and board connections, not just the loose IC marking. A DDI that is electrically suitable but has the wrong bump map or bonding footprint cannot be fitted without a new panel assembly.

Color depth and image-data capability

Source-driver bit depth sets how many digital color codes can be represented per channel. Himax gives these examples: a 6-bit source driver supports 262K colors, an 8-bit source driver about 16 million colors, and a 10-bit source driver about 1 billion colors. Those figures describe code capacity; the visible result also depends on panel calibration, dithering, color filters, OLED subpixel behavior and the host’s video pipeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing candidate drivers, check whether the stated bit depth is native per channel, whether dithering is used, and whether the panel’s timing controller accepts that format. A host capable of 10-bit output cannot create 10-bit panel detail if the DDI or panel path is limited to 8 bits.

Example AMOLED support IC: Texas Instruments TPS65137AS

The TPS65137AS illustrates the difference between a panel power-supply IC and a display-driver IC. TI lists it as an active, dual-output AMOLED power supply with a 2.5–4.8 V input. It provides a fixed 4.6 V positive output and a digitally programmable negative output from −2.2 to −5.2 V, with up to 250 mA output current. Its 3 mm × 3 mm, 10-pin QFN package combines a boost converter, LDO post-regulator and inverting buck-boost converter.

TPS65137AS item Published value
Role AMOLED dual-output power-supply/support IC
Input voltage 2.5–4.8 V
Positive output Fixed 4.6 V
Negative output Digitally programmable −2.2 to −5.2 V
Output current 250 mA
Package 3 mm × 3 mm, 10-pin QFN
Power stages Boost converter, LDO post-regulator and inverting buck-boost converter

Those specifications can satisfy the rail-generation portion of a small AMOLED design when the panel’s requirements fit them. They do not provide image-data reception, source outputs, gate scanning, timing, compensation or panel bonding. The panel’s DDI remains a separate, panel-matched device.

Reliability and application trade-offs

Texas Instruments’ automotive-display analysis identifies a minimum density of 300 pixels per inch for a quality image as perceived by vehicle occupants. It also describes automotive display temperature ranges from −40 °C to above 105 °C and notes that vehicle display design and production support may need to last at least five years and potentially up to 10 years because of warranties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures are automotive design conditions, not universal limits for every OLED or LCD product. They show why a driver choice must include temperature qualification, lifetime and supply continuity. TI identifies high-temperature reliability, lifetime and cost as adoption constraints for OLED in automotive applications. LCD’s mature supply base and backlight architecture can be advantageous where those constraints dominate; OLED can offer thinner construction, sharp images and deep black where its environmental and lifetime requirements are acceptable.

A practical design or repair workflow

  1. Document the module. Record the panel part number, revision, connector, flex marking, resolution, refresh rate and intended temperature range.
  2. Obtain the panel specification. Collect interface timing, initialization commands, rail voltages, current limits, power sequencing, reset behavior and touch requirements.
  3. Classify every component. Separate the DDI, timing controller, touch controller, bias supply, gamma/VCOM circuitry, level shifters and backlight driver. Do not treat a support IC as the DDI.
  4. Map the rails. For LCD, identify AVDD, ±AVDD, VGH, VGL and backlight outputs. For AMOLED, identify positive and negative panel rails and their sequencing.
  5. Verify the data path. Check host interface, lane configuration, color depth, frame timing and command compatibility against the DDI documentation.
  6. Verify physical integration. Confirm COG, COF or COP construction, bump map, package outline and flex routing before ordering a replacement.
  7. Validate under load and temperature. Measure startup, steady-state ripple, peak current, image uniformity and operation across the specified temperature range.

Common failure symptoms and what they indicate

  • No image with correct logic voltage: the panel may still lack a required bias rail, reset sequence, clock or initialization command.
  • Image but wrong grayscale or visible flicker on LCD: gamma references, VCOM, source-drive levels or common-electrode settings may be incorrect.
  • OLED image with uneven brightness: compensation data, current regulation, rail stability or panel-specific calibration may not match.
  • Rows or columns missing: timing, lane mapping, gate/source configuration or a bonded-flex connection may be wrong.
  • Backlight absent while LCD data is valid: investigate the separate LED driver and backlight power path rather than replacing the DDI.
  • Display works but touch does not: check the discrete touch controller or TDDI configuration and its initialization, not only the display IC.

Bottom line

Choose an LCD DDI for an LCD panel and an OLED DDI for the exact OLED panel family. LCD drivers center on voltage-mode liquid-crystal control, gamma/VCOM references, gate-level shifting and a separate backlight. OLED drivers center on emissive-pixel current, compensation and panel-specific positive and negative rails. A power IC such as the TPS65137AS can generate AMOLED bias rails, but it cannot replace the image-driving IC. Compatibility is established only when interface, timing, analog limits, compensation, touch architecture and bonding all agree with the panel documentation.
