For movies and scripted shows, start with Filmmaker Mode if your OLED TV offers it; otherwise, try Cinema or Movie mode. For games, choose Game mode or the set’s equivalent. The best choice depends on what you watch, your room, and your TV model—not on one universal setting.
Which picture mode should you use for movies and shows?
Choose Filmmaker Mode as a starting point for films and scripted shows, then compare it with Cinema or Movie mode in the room where you normally watch. Filmmaker Mode is intended to present content with less added processing, rather than simply make the picture brighter.
LG says its implementation turns off motion smoothing, image sharpening, and other processing while preserving the original aspect ratio, colors, and frame rate. Samsung describes Filmmaker Mode as showing content without changes to picture settings. These are manufacturers’ descriptions of intended behavior, not a guarantee that every TV will look identical or that every viewer will prefer the result.

For exact menu names and behavior, consult your TV’s manual. Labels and available options can vary by brand, model, input, and region.

Why can Filmmaker Mode look dark?
A darker-looking image does not by itself mean the TV is faulty. Samsung cautions that Filmmaker Mode may look darker than other picture modes. Room lighting, screen reflections, the incoming signal, content, and model-specific settings also affect the picture.
Compare Filmmaker Mode with Cinema or Movie mode under your usual viewing conditions. If another preset looks better to you in a bright room, it is reasonable to use it; that is a preference and environment choice, not proof that the brighter or more processed image is more accurate. LG also notes that picture settings should suit the viewing environment and personal taste.

Some newer LG products advertise ambient-light compensation with Filmmaker Mode, but availability is model- and year-specific. Do not assume your OLED has that feature.

Use Game mode or the manufacturer’s gaming equivalent, such as Game Optimizer where available. Gaming prioritizes interactive use, so a movie preset is not automatically the right choice. Samsung says Game Mode is intended to optimize speed and notes that graphics quality may decline slightly; Sony describes its Game mode as suitable for games. The exact behavior depends on the TV model and input.

Should you change individual settings or calibrate the TV?
For a practical first adjustment, use a built-in mode suited to what you are watching. There is no cross-brand set of numerical OLED settings established here: suitable values depend on the model, signal, content, and room. Check the manual before changing individual controls rather than copying numbers from another TV.
Professional calibration is optional, not a prerequisite for using Filmmaker, Cinema, or Movie mode. LG describes Auto Calibration as expert tuning for display deviations in color and brightness, and Samsung documents Smart Calibration on supported models. Availability and operation depend on the TV.

How to choose quickly
