Start with seating distance, not a room label. Measure from your eyes to the screen, then use LG’s practical 40-degree field-of-view guide (viewing distance in inches divided by 1.2) as a starting screen size. Check the result against wall width, stand dimensions, eye level and your household’s comfort with a large image. Choose between WOLED and QD-OLED according to room lighting and the type of HDR content you watch, but treat the exact model, coating and processing as more important than the panel acronym. For PS5, Xbox or a gaming PC, verify the actual HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM and input-lag specifications. OLED burn-in is possible with prolonged static content, so match the technology to how you really use the TV.
1. Choose the screen size from your seat
Screen-size advice based on labels such as small living room or large bedroom is unreliable because rooms and seating layouts vary. The useful measurement is the distance from your normal eye position to the display. A closer seat supports a smaller diagonal; a distant sofa needs a larger one to deliver the same field of view and detail.
Use LG’s 40-degree starting calculation
LG describes a common guideline: divide viewing distance in inches by 1.2 to estimate the recommended diagonal for a 40-degree viewing angle. The result is a starting point, not a guarantee that every viewer will prefer that size. For example, a 72-inch seating distance gives 60 inches (72 ÷ 1.2), while 96 inches gives 80 inches. Round to a screen size that actually exists and then check the physical fit.

| Measured eye-to-screen distance | LG 40-degree starting diagonal | How to use the result |
|---|---|---|
| 60 inches | 50 inches | Use as a reference when comparing nearby 48- to 55-inch models. |
| 72 inches | 60 inches | A 55- to 65-inch set may be the practical range after checking furniture. |
| 84 inches | 70 inches | Compare 65- and 77-inch options for immersion versus wall clearance. |
| 96 inches | 80 inches | Large-screen models become candidates; verify stand width and viewing comfort. |
| 108 inches | 90 inches | Consider the largest panel your wall, delivery route and seating layout can safely accommodate. |
The examples are arithmetic applications of the 40-degree rule, not a promise that a particular diagonal will be comfortable. Sit in the actual viewing position and, if possible, mark the proposed screen edges with tape before ordering.

Cross-check with Sony’s 4K minimum-distance reference
Sony states that the recommended distance for watching a 4K TV is 1.5 times the TV’s vertical screen size. This is a minimum-distance reference expressed in screen height, rather than a diagonal-size recommendation. Use it as a second check: a very close seat may make a giant image tiring even when the diagonal calculation looks attractive. Because aspect ratio and bezel designs affect physical dimensions, use the specific model’s published height when applying the 1.5-times rule.
Check the room before paying
- Measure wall width, cabinet depth, doorway clearance and the route the boxed TV must travel.
- Confirm the stand’s width and footprint; a panel can fit the wall while its feet do not fit the furniture.
- Place the center of the screen near seated eye level. A high mount can create neck strain and make reflections more visible.
- Leave room for a soundbar, center speaker, cables and ventilation. Account for a receiver or console behind the set.
- Ask whether everyone who watches prefers a cinema-like image or a less enveloping view. The mathematically larger choice is not automatically the better household choice.
2. Understand WOLED and QD-OLED
Both technologies use self-emissive pixels. Each pixel can turn off for a true black, giving OLED very high contrast in a dark room without the haloing associated with a backlight. The difference is how the pixels create color.
How WOLED works
WOLED creates white light, filters it into colors and adds a white subpixel. That design can produce strong pure-white output and, in many models, better control of reflections. It may be a sensible starting point for a bright living room, but the coating and the individual television still determine real-world performance.

QD-OLED starts with blue light and uses quantum dots to create other colors. Comparative measurements from RTINGS found QD-OLED ahead in saturated-color volume, which can make highly colorful HDR highlights look more intense. Reflection behavior and full-screen white brightness are not automatically superior, however; WOLED models generally performed better on those points in bright rooms in RTINGS’ comparisons.
| Decision factor | Typical WOLED advantage | Typical QD-OLED advantage | What to verify on the exact TV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark-room black level | Self-emissive pixels deliver deep blacks. | Self-emissive pixels deliver deep blacks. | Look for measured black-level behavior and any room-light lift. |
| Saturated HDR color | Can be strong, but color volume varies by model. | RTINGS’ comparative measurements found higher saturated-color volume. | Check independent measurements for the specific generation and picture mode. |
| Pure-white or full-screen brightness | WOLED models generally measured better in bright-room comparisons. | Peak highlights can be impressive, but full-screen output is model-dependent. | Use full-screen and windowed brightness figures, not a peak claim alone. |
| Reflection handling | WOLED models generally had better reflection handling in RTINGS’ comparisons. | Some coatings can reflect more; implementation differs. | Inspect the coating and test with your room’s windows and lamps. |
| Overall picture quality | Processing, motion and tone mapping can be excellent. | Processing, motion and tone mapping can be excellent. | Compare the complete model, not just the panel label. |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. RTINGS stresses that the exact television and its coating can matter more than whether the panel is called WOLED or QD-OLED. Two sets with the same panel family can differ in brightness management, anti-reflection treatment, upscaling and motion handling.
3. Match OLED to room lighting
Bright living room
In daylight, reflected light can lift blacks and reduce perceived contrast even when the panel is capable of perfect black in a dark room. Prioritize measured full-screen brightness, reflection handling and black-level behavior with the room lights on. Position the screen away from direct windows, use curtains or shades when possible, and avoid placing a lamp directly opposite the panel. A model with higher peak HDR brightness can still look washed out if its surface mirrors a window, so reflection control deserves equal weight.

Dark cinema room
In a controlled dark room, WOLED and QD-OLED share their biggest strengths: deep blacks and very high contrast. Differences in saturated-color volume, HDR tone mapping, motion processing, upscaling, sound and price become more important. Look at shadow detail and highlight behavior in the picture mode you will actually use rather than relying on a showroom demo that may be set to an exaggerated mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMixed day-and-night use
Most living rooms need a compromise. Compare daytime reflections and evening black levels at the same seating position. Ask whether you watch sports, broadcast channels, movies, games or desktop content, because each exposes different weaknesses. Do not assume the brighter-looking store display is the better choice until you check its reflection behavior and accurate picture modes.
4. Gaming: verify the ports and signal path
A gaming badge is not a specification. Read the input table for the exact model and identify which sockets support the features you need. LG explains that a 120Hz display refreshes 120 times per second, while variable refresh rate (VRR) synchronizes the display’s refresh with the game to reduce tearing and stutter.
| Requirement | Why it matters | What to confirm before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI 2.1 | Provides the bandwidth used by many 4K/120Hz console and PC configurations. | Which numbered inputs are HDMI 2.1, and whether all required features work on those inputs. |
| 4K at 120Hz | Allows compatible games to output up to 120 frames per second at 4K. | The supported resolution and refresh combination, not a lower-resolution 120Hz mode. |
| VRR | Matches refresh timing to frame-rate changes, reducing tearing and stutter. | Supported VRR range, console compatibility and whether it works through your receiver. |
| ALLM | Automatically switches to a low-latency game mode when a compatible source is detected. | Whether ALLM is supported on the inputs you will use and can be overridden manually. |
| Low input lag | Reduces the delay between a controller action and the image response. | Measured lag in the relevant resolution and refresh mode, rather than a generic game-mode claim. |
| Enough full-featured ports | Prevents constant cable swapping when consoles, a PC, soundbar and receiver share the system. | Count the HDMI 2.1 inputs you need; a set with one suitable socket may be limiting. |
Dolby also lists refresh rate, eARC, HDMI-port count, VRR and ALLM among useful TV-selection criteria. If a soundbar or receiver handles switching, verify that it can pass the same 4K/120Hz and VRR signals; otherwise connect the console directly to the TV and use eARC for audio when supported. A certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is a reasonable accessory for a 4K/120Hz VRR console or PC, but a cable cannot add features the TV or receiver lacks.
Console and PC checklist
- List every source: each console, gaming PC, streaming box, receiver and soundbar.
- Mark the sources that need 4K/120Hz and VRR. Reserve full-featured HDMI 2.1 inputs for them.
- Confirm ALLM and low-latency performance in the exact picture mode you plan to use.
- Check eARC requirements if the TV will send lossless or object-based audio to a soundbar or receiver.
- After installation, enable 120Hz and VRR in the console or PC settings and verify the TV’s information overlay reports the expected signal.
5. HDR, motion and everyday picture quality
HDR brightness is more than a peak number
HDR movies and games combine small bright highlights with darker surroundings. Ask for both peak-window and sustained or full-screen brightness measurements, because a television that briefly reaches a high highlight level may dim a bright scene. Tone mapping determines whether the set preserves highlight detail or clips it; compare that behavior with the HDR content you watch most.
Color volume affects vivid scenes
Color volume describes how much brightness a display can maintain while showing saturated colors. RTINGS’ comparisons found an advantage for QD-OLED in saturated-color volume, which is relevant to colorful HDR games and animation. It does not mean every QD-OLED is brighter in every scene, or that WOLED color is weak. Use model-specific measurements and your preferred picture mode.

- OLED CARE: Helps protect your OLED display to retain the best picture quality possible over time
Motion and upscaling matter for mixed sources
Streaming services, broadcast channels and older discs are often below 4K. Processing quality determines how cleanly the TV scales them and how it handles motion in sports or camera pans. Compare motion interpolation controls, judder handling and the naturalness of low-resolution faces and text. A panel advantage can be outweighed by poor processing if most of your viewing is not native 4K.
6. Burn-in: understand the risk and reduce it
Burn-in is a real OLED technology risk caused by prolonged static elements, such as a fixed channel logo, news ticker, game HUD or desktop interface. RTINGS’ accelerated longevity work found that any OLED can eventually show burn-in under intense static exposure. Its comparative guidance also says mixed viewing with sensible habits generally makes the risk manageable for most people. Manageable does not mean impossible.
Estimate your exposure
- Lower practical risk: varied movies, series, sports and games with changing images and regular power-off periods.
- Higher practical risk: one news channel all day, a single game with a fixed HUD for many hours every day, or a computer desktop used as a monitor for long shifts.
- Highest concern: commercial signage, security feeds or any application that leaves the same bright shapes on screen continuously.
Use the TV’s pixel-care features
Read the manual for logo dimming, screen-shift, panel refresh and automatic compensation cycles. Leave those functions enabled unless the manufacturer gives a specific reason to change them. Do not unplug the television immediately after every viewing session if it needs standby time to complete a maintenance cycle. Avoid disabling screen savers on a connected computer, and set the computer to sleep when idle.
Check warranty language before buying
Burn-in coverage varies by model, region and warranty terms. Look for an explicit statement rather than assuming a general panel warranty covers image retention. If static use is central to your work, a non-OLED display may be the safer choice even when OLED’s contrast is attractive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Audio, HDR formats and connectivity
Plan the audio path
Thin OLED panels have limited space for speakers. If you use a soundbar or receiver, check eARC support, the number and placement of HDMI ports, and whether the receiver passes your gaming signals. Decide whether sources connect to the TV or an external switcher before mounting the set; changing cables behind a wall-mounted panel is inconvenient.
Consider the formats you actually watch
Compare the HDR formats supported by your preferred discs, streaming services and game consoles, along with the TV’s tone mapping. Support on a specification sheet does not guarantee identical results across apps. Verify that the built-in app or your external streaming device supports the services and formats you use in your country.

- Measure the seat: record eye-to-screen distance in inches and calculate distance ÷ 1.2 for the 40-degree starting point.
- Validate the geometry: apply Sony’s 1.5-times-screen-height minimum-distance reference and check eye level, wall width and stand footprint.
- Classify the room: bright, dark or mixed. In bright rooms weight reflection handling and full-screen brightness; in dark rooms compare color volume, tone mapping, processing and motion.
- Choose the panel direction: consider QD-OLED for its measured saturated-color-volume advantage, or WOLED where reflection handling and pure-white performance are priorities, then compare the actual models.
- Map the inputs: list consoles, PC, receiver and soundbar; verify HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, low input lag and enough full-featured ports.
- Assess static content: if logos, dashboards or desktop windows remain fixed for long periods, review pixel-care controls and warranty terms or choose a non-OLED alternative.
- Check the complete installation: confirm delivery access, mounting hardware, cable lengths, ventilation, audio placement and a return policy that covers panel defects.
- Calibrate expectations: use an accurate picture mode, disable unnecessary overscan, and adjust brightness for the room instead of judging the set only by a showroom preset.
9. Common buying mistakes
Buying by diagonal alone
A larger panel can overwhelm a close sofa, while a small panel can waste a distant seating position. Use the distance calculation and a taped wall outline rather than a room-size rule.
Assuming every HDMI socket is identical
Manufacturers may provide fewer HDMI 2.1 inputs than total HDMI inputs. Read the port-by-port specification and reserve the capable sockets for sources that need them.
Using peak brightness as a room-performance proxy
Peak highlights, sustained full-screen output and reflection handling answer different questions. A bright room exposes the latter two, while a dark room reveals tone mapping and shadow behavior.
Treating burn-in demonstrations as a prediction of normal use
Accelerated tests deliberately stress static content and show that the risk is real; they do not predict the exact time a mixed-use household will see retention. Base the decision on your own static-image exposure and the warranty.

Quick Recap
10. The short decision framework
- Choose size: start with seating distance ÷ 1.2, then confirm Sony’s distance reference, physical fit and comfort.
- Choose panel: QD-OLED usually favors saturated HDR color; WOLED commonly favors reflection handling and bright-white output. Let the exact model decide.
- Choose for the room: bright rooms demand reflection control and measured full-screen brightness; dark rooms reward black level, tone mapping, processing and motion.
- Choose for gaming: require the actual HDMI 2.1 inputs, 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, low input lag and enough ports.
- Choose for longevity: mixed viewing lowers practical burn-in concern, but static-heavy use calls for stronger precautions or a different display technology.
