OLED TVs can still develop permanent burn-in, but it is not an expected outcome of ordinary mixed viewing. The risk rises when bright, fixed images stay on screen for long periods or recur in the same places—something that can happen with news channels, desktop use, or the same game played for hours. That is not necessarily “doing something really dumb”: for some people, it is simply how they use a TV.
What OLED burn-in is—and what it is not
Burn-in is persistent image retention: a fixed image or element remains visible after the picture changes and can show through other content. Temporary image retention may fade; persistent burn-in lasts longer and may remain visible.
Common sources of fixed screen elements include channel logos, news tickers, game HUDs, menus, app interfaces, and static images. Letterbox bars or reduced-size content can also leave parts of the screen underused. The concern is uneven cumulative wear, not a single momentary pause.
Which viewing habits raise the risk?
The relevant combination is repeated exposure, time, and brightness. A small logo that appears during varied programming is different from a bright interface that occupies the same area for much of the day. No universal number of hours separates safe use from burn-in.

- All-day news: A persistent logo and ticker keep bright elements in the same locations.
- TV-as-monitor use: Desktop taskbars, windows, and other interface elements may remain fixed for long sessions.
- One game on repeat: A HUD that stays in place can expose the same screen areas repeatedly.
- Paused or idle screens: Leaving a game, menu, or no-signal image up unnecessarily adds static exposure.
For these uses, reducing brightness to a comfortable level and varying content when practical can reduce exposure. The evidence does not establish an exact lifespan gain from lowering brightness.
What long-term tests show—and what they cannot predict
In an August 2026 analysis, RTINGS compared selected 2020–2023 OLED TVs with a 2017 LG C7 at a 10,500-hour CNN checkpoint. Every newer OLED in that test developed visible permanent retention under the test conditions, while areas showing varied content did not show noticeable burn-in. The sets displayed CNN at each model’s maximum brightness in its recommended SDR picture mode; brightness was not matched across models. The result demonstrates vulnerability under sustained static use, not the likely outcome for a household watching a mix of shows, films, and games. RTINGS’ comparison and test details.

RTINGS also found that average 2023 OLEDs in its dataset were 28% brighter than the 2017 OLED average in a sustained 10% SDR window test, and 52% brighter in a sustained full-screen SDR test. Those figures describe brightness under RTINGS’ test conditions; they are not measures of burn-in resistance. Because the 2026 comparison used each TV’s maximum output rather than matched luminance, it cannot rank newer models’ intrinsic durability at equal brightness. RTINGS’ brightness comparison.

An earlier RTINGS real-life test followed six 2017 LG C7 OLEDs playing unaltered content. In its May 2019 update, the football and FIFA 18 sets had uniformity issues, and the live NBC set was beginning to show them; varied-content sets generally had no noticeable issues on normal content. That test helps illustrate the difference between static-heavy and varied use, but its 2017 hardware does not establish how every current model will behave. RTINGS’ real-life test.

- OLED CARE: Helps protect your OLED display to retain the best picture quality possible over time
RTINGS’ Longevity 3.0 test launched on October 2, 2026, with 12 TVs and 12 monitors. Its TV units display an unaltered live U.S. CNN stream; most run at maximum SDR brightness, while the LG C5, Samsung S90F, and LG G5 are luminance-matched, with the CNN white banner around 470 nits, to compare selected OLED approaches more directly. The displays are switched on and off four times a day to allow compensation cycles. At launch, the published results were baseline measurements and setup information, not mature long-term conclusions. RTINGS says most sets in its earlier 100-TV longevity test accumulated more than 18,000 operating hours over about two years. RTINGS’ Longevity 3.0 update.
How to lower risk in everyday use
- Vary the picture when it is convenient. Switch content or use the screen for something else if the same bright logo, ticker, HUD, or interface has been fixed in place for a long session.
- Do not leave static screens running unnecessarily. LG says its screen saver activates after approximately two minutes of inactivity in the supported conditions described in its guidance. LG’s image-retention guidance.
- Choose a comfortable, lower brightness for static-heavy use. RTINGS’ older real-life test showed more severe retention on its maximum-brightness CNN set than on its 200-nit CNN set. Lowering brightness during bright static use should reduce wear, but the test did not quantify how much longer a panel might last. RTINGS’ test findings.
- Keep panel-care features enabled and follow the model’s instructions. Sony describes automatic panel refresh, panel calibration, pixel shift, and screen saver functions; Samsung describes automatic screen optimization on applicable models. Leave the TV powered as directed so scheduled maintenance can run. These features manage risk; they do not guarantee that burn-in cannot occur or that a refresh cycle can reverse permanent damage. Sony’s OLED image-retention guidance and Samsung’s screen-optimization guidance.
Sony’s U.S. support article, last modified January 16, 2026, states: “Due to the characteristics of the materials used to achieve high-definition imaging, an OLED TV screen may experience image retention if an image is continuously displayed for long periods or when the same image is displayed repeatedly.” This is manufacturer guidance, and it describes the exposure pattern behind the risk. If you mostly watch varied shows, films, sports, and other changing content, RTINGS says burn-in is unlikely to become an issue for most people. If your screen is routinely a bright news channel, desktop, or single game for long stretches, the risk is more relevant. The available tests do not establish a universal incidence rate, a years-to-burn-in estimate, or burn-in resistance rankings for all 2024–2026 models.

For static-heavy use, consider whether you can vary content, reduce brightness, and use the TV’s care features. If avoiding persistent marks matters more than OLED’s picture characteristics, an LCD TV is an alternative to consider. The cited tests do not establish that any particular OLED model is burn-in-proof or safest.
