Yes—older handheld gaming PCs can run major Windows game launchers and usually let you remap controls, but neither feature is completely automatic. A handheld is a Windows computer with an integrated gamepad, so input passes through the device utility, its current control mode, firmware, Windows build, launcher and the game’s own controller code.
That layered design explains the common surprises: a button can work on the Windows desktop but fail in one game; an external pad can be detected while the built-in pad still has priority; and a game that launches may still need resolution, text-size or control changes. Use the procedures and compatibility checks below to determine what an older handheld can do before you buy, install or troubleshoot a game.
What “older handheld gaming PC” means
In this guide, an older handheld gaming PC means a Windows-based portable computer whose display, processor and battery are built around integrated gamepad controls. The operating system gives you the same desktop and launcher access as a Windows laptop, while a manufacturer utility adds controller modes, mappings, performance profiles and firmware controls.

A game may receive input from the handheld’s virtual gamepad profile rather than directly from Windows. Switching between Gamepad, Desktop or Auto mode can therefore change what the game sees. A firmware update or a utility update can also add mapping features or alter profile behavior. Treat compatibility as a combination of hardware, software versions and the specific game—not as a single yes-or-no property of the handheld.

Can you remap buttons on a Legion Go or ROG Ally?
Legion Go: use Button Mapping in Legion Space
Lenovo added Button Mapping in a Legion Go update dated September 13, 2024. On a current installation, open Legion Space and follow Controller → Button Mapping → Edit. Choose the layout you want to modify, then assign an action to a button.
The update documents two layouts, Game Pad and FPS. A mapping can target another controller button, a mouse button, a keyboard key or a key combination. This is useful for games that expect keyboard commands, radial-menu shortcuts or mouse clicks even though you are playing from the couch.
Profiles can be changed from the right-side menu. Lenovo’s update note described per-game profiles as a planned improvement at that time, so do not assume that every Legion Space version automatically selects a separate profile for each title. If your version does not expose a game-specific selector, switch the profile manually before launching and restore your preferred general profile afterward.

If a stick, trigger or button behaves incorrectly, first use Legion Space’s controller reset and calibration tools. A bad calibration can look like a mapping error: a stick may drift, a trigger may never reach its full range, or a button may appear to remain pressed. Test the controls in Windows and in a second game after calibration before creating a complex remap.

ROG Ally: select the right control mode
ASUS documents three ROG Ally control modes: Gamepad, Desktop and Auto. The selected mode determines how Windows and game profiles receive input. Gamepad mode is intended for titles that understand a standard controller. Desktop mode assigns controls for pointer movement and keyboard-oriented Windows use. Auto lets the software change behavior according to the active application.
When a game ignores a remap, open Armoury Crate SE and check the mode and the active game profile before changing individual assignments. A profile built for Desktop mode can make a gamepad-only title appear unresponsive, while Gamepad mode can make it difficult to operate a launcher or text field.
External controllers and the built-in controller
ASUS says the Ally can connect up to four controllers simultaneously. Some games nevertheless default to the Ally’s built-in controller when an external pad is connected. For that case, ASUS recommends disabling Embedded Controller, then reconnecting or restarting the game so it selects the external device. Re-enable the embedded controller when you want to return to handheld controls.

A reliable remapping workflow
- Update the handheld utility and firmware. Mapping menus and profile behavior can differ by version. Restart after updates.
- Choose the intended control mode. Use Gamepad for a controller-first game, Desktop for Windows navigation and Auto only when its application detection works correctly.
- Test the unmodified controls. Confirm that sticks, triggers and every face button work in Windows or the utility’s test screen.
- Create the smallest useful change. Remap only the missing action first. A single keyboard key or mouse click is easier to diagnose than a complete replacement layout.
- Launch the game and inspect its own controls menu. Some games require you to select a controller preset or enable controller input before they accept the handheld profile.
- Save and document the profile. Record which mode and layout you used. This prevents a later switch to an FPS or Desktop profile from looking like hardware failure.
Will Steam, Game Pass, Epic, EA, Ubisoft or GOG games run?
ROG Ally’s official FAQ explicitly lists all major launchers, including Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, the EA App and GOG Galaxy. These are Windows applications, so the Ally can install and run their clients rather than being restricted to one storefront.

Other Windows handhelds also run Windows launchers, but the practical experience depends on driver support, available storage, sign-in requirements and the game’s input implementation. A launcher opening successfully proves only that the Windows application runs; it does not prove that every game in its catalog is optimized for a small screen or controller.
| Launcher or service | What the documented support establishes | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Pass | ASUS lists it among supported major launchers on ROG Ally. | Whether the individual game carries a handheld compatibility label, has readable text and accepts the active control mode. |
| Steam | ASUS lists Steam as supported on ROG Ally. | The game’s controller configuration, launcher overlays and any required in-game settings. |
| Epic Games Launcher | ASUS lists Epic Games Launcher as supported on ROG Ally. | Controller navigation in the game and performance at the handheld’s available resolution. |
| Ubisoft Connect | ASUS lists Ubisoft Connect as supported on ROG Ally. | Sign-in or secondary-launcher behavior and the title’s own controller support. |
| EA App | ASUS lists the EA App as supported on ROG Ally. | Whether the game starts through a second launcher and whether its control profile is correct. |
| GOG Galaxy | ASUS lists GOG Galaxy as supported on ROG Ally. | Older games may need a custom mapping or a keyboard-and-mouse layout. |
Do not convert this launcher list into a universal compatibility percentage. No authoritative source establishes a single success rate for all games or all older handhelds. Compatibility is title-specific and can change after a game, driver, Windows or launcher update.
Why does a controller work in Windows but not in a game?
The game is receiving a different mode
Windows can recognize the physical controls while the game receives Desktop-mode mouse and keyboard events, or an Auto profile that changed when focus moved to another window. Return to the handheld utility, select Gamepad mode, refocus the game and test again.

With an external pad attached, the game may bind to the first enumerated device—the handheld’s embedded controller—while you are pressing the second one. On ROG Ally, disable Embedded Controller as ASUS recommends, then reconnect the external pad and restart the game.

The game has its own controller setting
Some PC titles require an explicit controller preset, Steam Input-style layout or “enable gamepad” switch. Open the game’s input menu, select a standard controller layout if available, apply the change and return to gameplay. A Windows desktop test cannot confirm that this in-game setting is enabled.
A profile or calibration is wrong
Check which Legion Space or Armoury Crate profile is active, then test an unmodified Gamepad layout. On Legion Go, run controller reset and calibration. If the default profile works but a custom one does not, recreate the mapping one action at a time.
The game is not designed for a controller-first interface
A title can launch normally yet expect a mouse, keyboard or text entry at menus. Map the required keyboard or mouse actions, keep a small Bluetooth or USB keyboard available for setup, and check whether the game’s compatibility label calls for adjustments.

Use this recovery order
- Close the game completely, including its launcher process if it remains open.
- Set the handheld to Gamepad mode and disconnect unused controllers.
- Verify calibration and test each control in the handheld utility.
- Reconnect the intended controller, or disable Embedded Controller on an Ally when using an external pad.
- Start the launcher and game again, then select the game’s controller preset.
- If the title still fails, try a minimal custom mapping and record the utility, Windows and game versions for further support.
How to judge whether a game is handheld compatible
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility program provides four per-game labels. They describe the amount of adjustment expected, not a permanent guarantee.

| Label | Meaning | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld optimized | The game should launch with optimal resolution, controller navigation and clear text without tweaking. | Start with the default profile, then change settings only for personal preference or battery life. |
| Mostly compatible | The game works, but minor adjustments may be required. | Expect to change an in-game setting, text scale, resolution or control profile. |
| Unsupported | The game is not supported by the program. | Do not assume remapping will solve the limitation; verify the specific reason before investing time. |
| Not tested | The game has not yet been tested. | Treat the label as unknown, not as a failure. Check the game’s requirements and be prepared for manual setup. |
Xbox notes that some games still need in-game setting changes for optimal performance, and labels can change as testing and software updates change. Before installing, use this checklist:
- Check the game’s current compatibility label, if one is available.
- Read the game’s own system requirements and controller notes.
- Confirm that the launcher and any secondary sign-in process work on your Windows version.
- Plan for the screen: verify that menus and text remain readable at the handheld’s resolution.
- Identify whether the first launch requires keyboard input, an account prompt or a graphics configuration.
- Keep enough storage for the game and its updates; a microSD card or USB-C storage can help on devices that support them.
Windows text entry on ROG Ally
ASUS records a version-specific Windows 11 feature for text entry. Update KB5053656, released March 27, 2025, added Gamepad Layout Keyboard support for listed Ally models when the device runs Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.3624 or later and Armoury Crate SE 2.1.10.0 or later.
These prerequisites matter: the feature is not evidence that every Ally model or earlier Windows build has the same keyboard. Check Settings → Windows Update for the build, then check Armoury Crate SE for its version before troubleshooting the on-screen gamepad keyboard. Because Microsoft and ASUS can revise model lists and requirements, verify current support before relying on this feature for a particular device.
Legion Go ports, storage and detachable controls
Legion Go hardware includes detachable controllers, USB-C connectors and a microSD slot. Those features make it practical to switch between handheld play, a docked display with USB accessories and expanded game storage. Detaching the controllers does not by itself change a game’s compatibility; you still need the correct control profile and, for wireless or wired accessories, the right Windows device selected.
When troubleshooting a dock or accessory, test the handheld undocked first. Confirm the game works with the built-in controls, then add the USB-C dock, external display or controller one device at a time. This isolates a port, hub or controller-selection issue from a game-profile issue.
Comparison guide for older Windows handhelds
| Decision factor | Legion Go | ROG Ally | Other older Windows handhelds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system and launchers | Windows PC; launcher behavior depends on Windows and the installed client. | ASUS explicitly lists Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, EA App and GOG Galaxy. | Check the installed Windows edition, drivers and each launcher’s requirements. |
| Remapping depth | Button Mapping supports Game Pad and FPS layouts, controller, mouse, keyboard and key-combination assignments. | Armoury Crate SE control modes and profiles determine whether input is treated as gamepad or desktop input. | Feature depth varies by the manufacturer utility and firmware. |
| Controller design | Detachable controllers; reset and calibration tools are documented. | Integrated controls, with up to four external controllers supported according to ASUS. | Check whether controls are integrated, detachable or dependent on a separate accessory. |
| Compatibility guidance | Use the game’s requirements and current utility behavior. | Use the same checks plus ASUS’s launcher and mode guidance. | Use a per-game label where available and expect more manual desktop work on untested titles. |
| Expansion | USB-C connectors and a microSD slot support docks, peripherals and storage expansion. | Confirm the exact port and storage configuration of your model. | Compare ports, card support and dock compatibility before buying accessories. |
Version and support caveats
Controller mapping is not a permanent hardware specification. It can change with Legion Space, Armoury Crate SE, firmware, Windows builds and game updates. The Legion Go mapping feature described above comes from Lenovo’s September 13, 2024 update; the Ally keyboard feature depends on the March 27, 2025 KB5053656 release, Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.3624 or later and Armoury Crate SE 2.1.10.0 or later.
Record those versions when a problem appears. A support request that says “the controller does not work” is difficult to diagnose; a report that names the handheld model, Windows build, utility version, control mode, launcher and game usually identifies whether the fault is calibration, profile selection, device priority or the game itself.
