Old School RuneScape (OSRS) and World of Warcraft: Forever are competing for attention around the same idea: an enduring MMO that preserves a recognizable classic foundation while continuing to grow. That is a design and audience comparison, not proof that players are leaving OSRS for Forever or that either game has won a measurable market-share battle.

What WoW: Forever actually is

World of Warcraft: Forever resets the clock to 2004, the year the original World of Warcraft launched, but it is not simply a replay of vanilla progression. PC Gamer reported on September 12, 2026, that the announced version will keep a level cap of 60 “for the foreseeable future” while adding substantial new content.

  • Three new zones
  • Several overhauled zones
  • Nine new dungeons
  • Two new raids
  • The Skyborne Elves race
  • New race-and-class combinations

The reported launch date is November 4, 2026. Access is covered by the existing WoW subscription, while optional Battle.net upgrade packs start at $30, according to that September report. Those details describe the announced offering and may change before release.

Why OSRS is the comparison point

OSRS established a particularly influential model for running a classic MMO as a living game. It retains the identity of an older version while adding quests, skills, areas and other content over time. The old build is a foundation rather than a museum exhibit.

GamesRadar quoted WoW world builder Matthew Armstrong describing Forever as “an Old School RuneScape-style upgrade to the original World of Warcraft MMO many folks know inside out and love.” That wording makes OSRS the clearest precedent for Forever’s design ambition: keep the 2004-era character recognizable, then extend it without turning it into modern retail WoW.

This is an intentional design parallel. It does not establish that Blizzard copied OSRS wholesale, nor does it show that OSRS is losing users.

Is WoW Forever the OSRS of World of Warcraft?

As a shorthand, yes—with important limits. Both projects treat a classic ruleset as a long-term platform for additions. Forever starts from 2004 WoW; OSRS starts from an older RuneScape build. In both cases, the challenge is deciding which improvements preserve the game’s identity and which make it feel like a different game.

Armstrong has framed Forever around that tension. His published principles include “Convenience is the death of the journey,” “If you’re making a game for everyone then you’re making it for no one,” and “Every change we make incurs a debt to the authenticity of the game and sooner or later that debt will be paid.” These are design principles, not a promise that every feature will work exactly like an OSRS feature.

Where the two games differ

Design axis OSRS WoW: Forever
Starting point An old RuneScape build maintained as a live game World of Warcraft as it existed in 2004
Change policy New content is added while the classic identity remains the reference point New zones, dungeons, raids, a race and race/class combinations are announced for the 2004-rooted branch
Level framework Multiple skill-based progression tracks A level cap of 60 for the foreseeable future, according to the September 12, 2026 report
Access Not established by the cited material Reportedly included with the existing WoW subscription; Battle.net upgrade packs start at $30

Progression: horizontal or vertical?

Calling Forever “horizontal progression” would be premature. A WoW: Forever forum analysis characterizes OSRS as having 24 largely isolated skill-progression systems, whereas traditional WoW progression generally escalates power through gear, consumables, buffs, dungeons and raids. That is community analysis, not an official Blizzard specification.

Forever’s announced content tells us that the game will add places and endgame activities, but it does not yet establish how character power will be distributed between them. Until Blizzard publishes detailed systems, the safer description is “2004-rooted progression with new content,” not a confirmed horizontal model.

Can WoW Forever replace OSRS?

It can be an alternative for some players, but the available evidence cannot support a replacement claim. Armstrong said Forever is intended for Classic players and for “the millions of people who have had their accounts lapse over the years because they were not satisfied with changes that were made to the game.” That identifies a target audience interested in a slower, familiar WoW, not a measured OSRS migration.

The overlap is practical as well as thematic. CurseForge lists an Ironman Forever addon that brings OSRS-style Ironman rules to WoW Forever. Its existence shows that at least some players want to transfer a recognizable challenge format between the games; it does not measure how many players are doing so or where they previously played.

Could Forever adopt OSRS-style player polling?

A Blizzard forum proposal suggests using OSRS-like polling for Forever and mentions a 70% approval threshold. This is a player proposal, not evidence that Blizzard has adopted polling or that a threshold has been set.

Governance matters because every convenience feature or systems change can alter the classic feel. Polling could give players a formal voice, but it would also require clear rules about eligibility, question wording, thresholds and whether developers can reject a result. No such Forever process has been confirmed in the cited material.

Should you play OSRS or WoW: Forever?

Choose OSRS if you want

  • A RuneScape identity built around many separate skills and long-term self-directed goals.
  • A proven classic MMO that has already developed its own ongoing-content model.
  • Ironman-style restrictions and other established challenge traditions.

Choose WoW: Forever if you want

  • The world, classes and combat foundation of 2004-era World of Warcraft.
  • New zones, dungeons and raids added without moving to the retail WoW design.
  • An announced level-60 framework and access through the existing WoW subscription.

Players who value both styles do not have to treat the choice as permanent. Forever is scheduled for November 4, 2026, so its long-term systems and community will only become clear after launch and continued updates.

What the comparison really means

OSRS is functioning as an unplanned benchmark for Forever: it demonstrates that a recognizable old MMO can remain active while receiving carefully chosen additions. Forever is attempting to apply that lesson to 2004 WoW. The competition is therefore for player attention, nostalgia and confidence in a game’s design direction—not a documented transfer of OSRS users.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WoW: Forever Classic Plus?

It fits the broad Classic Plus idea because it starts from 2004 WoW and adds new content, but the cited announcements do not establish an official label or complete feature definition.

Does WoW: Forever have horizontal progression?

Not conclusively. Community analysis contrasts OSRS’s separate skills with WoW’s gear-driven power progression, but Blizzard has not published enough Forever systems detail to classify its progression definitively.

When does WoW: Forever launch and what does it cost?

PC Gamer reported a November 4, 2026 launch, inclusion with the existing WoW subscription and Battle.net upgrade packs starting at $30.
