2026 is a particularly good time to revisit classic Pokémon because Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are back as digital Nintendo Switch games. The 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes bring Kanto and its original 151 Pokémon to Switch and Switch 2, with local wireless trading and battling. They do not require Nintendo Switch Online, but online play is not supported.

What makes 2026 a good year to revisit classic Pokémon?

The strongest reason is concrete: Nintendo has brought FireRed and LeafGreen to the Switch family during Pokémon’s 30th anniversary. Nintendo announced the return on February 24, 2026, with a February 28 release date for Australia; The Pokémon Company announced the games on February 27, and Nintendo described the releases as part of the anniversary celebration. Dates and eShop availability can vary by region, so check your local store listing. Nintendo Australia’s announcement says both games also run on Nintendo Switch 2.

That makes this an unusually convenient moment to play a classic Kanto adventure without tracking down original hardware and cartridges. It does not mean every older Pokémon game is now available on Switch: the confirmed return is specifically these two titles. Nintendo has not confirmed additional mainline rereleases, so speculation about other games should not be treated as a release plan.

What are the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen?

They are the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, which first appeared in Japan in 1996. The remakes revisit the Kanto journey while using the GBA-era presentation and systems. Players encounter the original 151 Pokémon, alongside features such as abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items, and the option to choose the player character’s gender.

Nintendo says the Switch releases broadly retain the contents of the original games, though some specifications differ because the games run on different hardware. They are sold separately as digital-only eShop software; Nintendo has not announced physical Switch editions. Language versions are separate, so check the listing for the version and language you want before buying. Nintendo Support’s FAQ covers the content, release format, and connectivity.

How trading and multiplayer work on Switch

The Switch versions support local wireless in place of the original Game Boy Advance link-cable and adapter methods. Up to four other players can join the Wireless Club to trade, battle, or play a minigame. This is local communication between nearby players, not online matchmaking: Nintendo Support states, “Online play is not supported.”

If your reason for replaying is to trade with a friend, plan to play together in person with compatible Switch-family systems. The wireless option modernizes the connection method, but it does not reproduce the convenience of trading with someone across the internet.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?

No. Nintendo Support says, “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to purchase or play these games.” These are standalone releases rather than entries in the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics collection, and Nintendo says they are not planned for that collection. You can buy and play them without subscribing to Switch Online.

Can you transfer Pokémon to Pokémon HOME?

Nintendo has announced that Pokémon will be transferable from FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokémon HOME. That is a stated plan, not proof that transfers are currently available: Nintendo’s present Pokémon HOME compatibility FAQ does not list either game among supported titles. Check the live compatibility list before planning a transfer, and do not assume the feature is active until the official list includes these releases.

Should you play on Switch or seek out the original GBA versions?

Consideration Switch / Switch 2 release Original GBA versions
Access Digital eShop releases, sold separately; no physical Switch edition announced. Regional availability and price depend on the local store listing. Requires original hardware and a physical game cartridge.
Trading and multiplayer Built-in local wireless for Wireless Club activities; online play is unsupported. Original link-cable or adapter connection methods.
Hardware Playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Requires compatible Game Boy Advance hardware.
Game content Broadly the original releases’ content, with some hardware-related specification differences, according to Nintendo. The original 2004 GBA releases.

If you already own a Switch-family console, the rereleases offer the straightforward route back to Kanto; Switch 2 is not required. Original hardware remains relevant if you specifically want to play the GBA releases on their native system or already own the cartridges. For anyone choosing the digital route, check the relevant regional eShop listing rather than relying on a price or date from another market.

What this return does—and does not—say about other classic games

Nintendo’s FAQ confirms availability details for these two releases, not a wider schedule of old Pokémon games. It lists Pokémon Trading Card Game in the Game Boy Classics collection and other Pokémon titles in Expansion Pack collections, while saying it has nothing to announce about potential additional titles. That is not confirmation of Switch rereleases for Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald. For now, make plans around the games Nintendo has actually announced.
