An old iPhone may still be worth selling or trading in, but age alone cannot tell you its value. Identify the exact model and storage, check what Apple currently offers in your region, and compare that with current prices for the same phone. If there is no worthwhile offer, it may still be recyclable for free through an available take-back program.
How do you tell whether an old iPhone is worth anything?
Use the phone’s exact model and condition—not a general label such as “really old”—to check its value. A working phone with a cracked screen, a phone that will not power on, and a phone in good condition can have different resale prospects. Storage, carrier status, and other configuration details may also affect comparisons.
- Identify the phone. Check its model in Settings or use Apple’s device-identification information. Record the storage capacity and whether it powers on. Do not rely on appearance alone; similar-looking phones can be different generations.
- Get a current trade-in estimate. Check Apple Trade In for your country or contact Apple locally. Treat an estimate as conditional: the final offer can depend on whether the device’s actual condition matches the details you provided.
- Compare resale prices for the same model. Look at current listings or completed-sale information, matching storage and condition as closely as possible. Account for selling effort, time, and any selling costs; a displayed marketplace average is not guaranteed money in your pocket.
- Choose reuse or recycling. If a current offer makes selling or trading in worthwhile, prepare the phone for handover. If it has no practical monetary value, check Apple’s free recycling option or a suitable local e-waste collection route.
How much might an old iPhone sell for?
There is no universal price for an old iPhone. As a US marketplace reference, Swappa’s “Most Listed” table showed an average price of $59 for iPhone 6S and $83 for iPhone 6S Plus when updated October 6, 2026. Its iPhone selling table showed $68 for both iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 when accessed October 7, 2026. What if Apple offers no trade-in credit?
No trade-in credit does not automatically make the phone e-waste. Apple says devices that are ineligible for credit can still be recycled for free through Apple Trade In. The program and handover process vary by country or region, so check the current instructions for your location. Apple Trade In.
If Apple’s route is unavailable or unsuitable where you live, look for an authorized local electronics or e-waste collection option. Do not put the whole phone or a loose battery into household rubbish; follow local collection requirements.

How should you prepare the iPhone before selling or recycling?
Back up the phone and transfer anything you want to keep before removing personal information. Apple’s preparation guidance also advises checking Parts and Service History for a repair marked “Finish Repair,” then completing the applicable steps to remove personal data before handover. Follow local rules for batteries, especially if the phone or battery is damaged. Apple UK says iPhone batteries should be serviced by Apple or an authorized provider and recycled or disposed of separately from household waste. - Sell it yourself when comparable phones are selling at prices that justify the effort and your device’s condition is accurately represented.
- Trade it in when the current regional offer and straightforward handover suit you better than managing a sale. Confirm the final value after assessment.
- Recycle it when there is no practical offer or the phone is unsuitable for reuse. Check local availability and drop-off or shipping instructions before sending it.
