There is no single price for an old iPhone: the exact model, storage, condition, and account status matter. In Apple’s 2026 U.S. page snapshot, Apple Trade In showed $35–$885 toward a new iPhone. Carrier promotions advertised higher maximum credits, but those are conditional deal values—not cash appraisals. Selling through a marketplace can produce a different amount, with fees and effort to account for. Compare fresh, device-specific quotes and the money you can actually receive before choosing.
What the current figures do—and do not—tell you
The figures below are snapshots of U.S. pages accessed in 2026, not guaranteed offers. Apple’s estimates depend on device details and condition, and a physical inspection can change the result. Swappa’s model-level figures are marketplace indicators, not promises for a particular phone.
| Route | Displayed figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Trade In | $35–$885 toward a new iPhone (Apple U.S. page, 2026 snapshot) | A broad range; your exact device quote determines the applicable value. It is not a universal cash amount. |
| Carrier promotion through Apple’s buying page | Up to $1,200 for AT&T and T-Mobile; up to $1,020 for Verizon (2026 snapshot) | Conditional promotional-credit ceilings, not standalone valuations of the old phone. |
| Swappa marketplace indicators | iPhone 16: $620 average price and $322 trade-in; iPhone 15: $457 average price and $213 trade-in (2026 snapshot) | Platform-displayed model-level figures, not a guaranteed sale price or net payout for a specific capacity or condition. |
These amounts are not directly interchangeable. An Apple trade-in estimate may be applied to a purchase or offered as a gift card; a carrier promotion may arrive as credits over time; a private sale depends on finding a buyer and subtracting costs. Check the live pages for your exact device and transaction.

Apple says trade-in value depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition. The online estimate is provisional: the store evaluation may differ, and the phone must match the description. Apple’s U.S. Trade In page gives the current estimate flow and options: Apple Trade In.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple’s Trade-In terms say the third-party vendor may revise the original quote if inspection differs from the description, Find My iPhone is not removed, or the trade-in does not arrive within 14 days of delivery of the trade-in box. Read the Trade-In terms and note whether the amount is purchase credit or a gift card before comparing it with cash alternatives.
Carrier credit: compare the credits you can actually earn
The “up to” amounts on Apple’s iPhone buying page are ceilings tied to carrier promotions, not amounts every customer receives for any iPhone. Eligibility can depend on the qualifying plan and line, financing or other offer terms, the trade-in device, and the timing of bill credits. Check Apple’s live iPhone buying page and the carrier’s terms for your account before treating a headline maximum as your value.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Work out the credit you would realistically receive over the required schedule, and include any plan or line obligations you must keep to earn it. If you may leave the plan early or do not want a financing commitment, the full advertised ceiling may not represent a useful comparison with an immediate trade-in or sale.

Selling it yourself: estimate net proceeds, not the asking price
A marketplace can show what similar models are priced at, but a listing price is not a completed sale and a model average does not account for your phone’s storage, condition, lock status, or buyer demand. Swappa’s accessed 2026 page displayed the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 figures above; use its sell page to check current device-specific listings and eligibility.

Swappa says listings are free and buyer and seller each pay 3% once a sale completes; policies can change, so confirm the current fee information. A seller’s practical proceeds also depend on shipping and the effort and time needed to complete the sale. Swappa requires devices to be functional and activation-ready, and excludes some phones with damage, account locks, or unpaid balances; check its device eligibility requirements before preparing a listing.
How to compare the three routes for your phone
- Identify the exact device. Record the iPhone model and storage capacity; do not rely on a broad model family or an average price.
- Describe its real condition. Note functional faults and cosmetic damage accurately. A quote based on a more favorable description may be revised after inspection.
- Check account and carrier status. Confirm whether the phone is carrier-locked, fully paid off, activation-ready, and free of account locks. These details can affect carrier eligibility and whether a marketplace will accept it.
- Get Apple’s current estimate. Record the itemized quote and whether it is credit toward a purchase or a gift card.
- Verify the carrier offer for your account. Check the qualifying plan, line status, financing terms, eligible trade-in criteria, and monthly credit schedule. Count only credits you qualify for and are willing to complete.
- Estimate self-sale proceeds. Start with current model-specific marketplace information, then subtract platform fees and shipping. Factor in the time and effort to list, communicate with buyers, and ship the phone.
- Compare like with like. Put the immediate trade-in or expected sale proceeds beside only the carrier credits you can realistically earn, including how long they take and what obligations they require.
Which route fits your priorities?
- Choose Apple Trade In if you value a relatively straightforward process and are satisfied with the personalized quote after allowing for inspection.
- Consider carrier credit if you meet the exact promotion requirements and are comfortable with its credit schedule and plan or financing commitments.
- Consider selling yourself if your device qualifies for a marketplace listing and the likely net proceeds justify the fees, shipping, and time involved.
None of the published figures establishes what a particular owner will receive. Refresh all three comparisons immediately before deciding: offers and marketplace pages can change, and the outcome depends on the exact phone and your account or transaction details.
