Open Knowledge Format (OKF) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solve different problems, so you do not have to choose one instead of the other. OKF v0.2 is a vendor-neutral way to organize knowledge as portable Markdown files with YAML frontmatter. RAG is a method for having a model use retrieved external information while generating an answer. An agent can read and navigate an OKF wiki directly, or a RAG system can search an index built from the same files. A wiki is especially worth considering when answers depend on following relationships across curated documents—not because every wiki is better than every RAG system.
What is Open Knowledge Format?
Open Knowledge Format is a convention for packaging a body of knowledge as a hierarchical bundle of documents. In the current OKF v0.2 specification, each concept is represented by a Markdown file with YAML frontmatter and a free-form Markdown body. A bundle can live in a Git repository, an archive, or a subdirectory of a larger repository.
The required core is deliberately small: the only frontmatter field that is always required is type. Other fields—such as title, description, resource, tags, provenance, trust, lifecycle, and computation details—are optional or recommended depending on how the bundle is used. Consumers are expected to tolerate unknown concept types and extensions, rather than assuming every knowledge base has the same taxonomy.
OKF does not prescribe a central schema registry, mandatory toolchain, serving or query system, or replacement for domain schemas such as Avro, Protobuf, or OpenAPI. The specification describes the format as “intentionally minimal: a directory of markdown files with YAML frontmatter.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is OKF a replacement for RAG?
No. OKF describes how knowledge is organized and annotated; RAG describes a way to retrieve external material for use during generation. They can work together: an agent can browse OKF files with tools, load selected files into context, or use a search system that indexes the bundle.
The foundational 2020 RAG paper by Lewis and colleagues combined a language model with non-parametric memory—in its experiments, a dense vector index of Wikipedia accessed by a neural retriever. Its reported results are useful historical context, not a definition of every modern RAG design. The paper found advantages over its parametric-only baselines on the knowledge-intensive tasks it studied, including more specific, diverse, and factual language. Retrieved evidence remains valuable; the question is how to organize it, find the right parts, and check them.

How does an agent use a wiki?
A wiki gives knowledge units visible structure: directories can express hierarchy, optional index files can introduce a topic progressively, Markdown headings divide documents, and ordinary links connect concepts. The agent can use those links as explicit paths to related information rather than relying only on a search ranking to surface every relevant passage.

In a human-and-agent-maintained knowledge base, plain-text files and Git can make review, authorship, diffs, and history part of the workflow. OKF v0.2 also provides optional places to record source materials, generation and verification events, lifecycle state, staleness, and attested computations. Those annotations help a reader assess context; they do not prove that a claim is true, current, or complete.
OKF wiki vs. RAG: which fits your questions?
The useful comparison is not “wiki or RAG” as mutually exclusive products. It is whether your workload needs an explicit, curated knowledge structure, retrieval across a large collection, or both. A downstream system can index an OKF bundle for RAG while preserving its links and provenance for agents that need to navigate it.

| Decision axis | Wiki organized with OKF | RAG system |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge organization | Hierarchical documents with concepts, headings, and ordinary links; optional frontmatter can add context. | A corpus is segmented or otherwise prepared for a system’s retrieval method; organization and metadata depend on the implementation. |
| Finding evidence | An agent can plan searches, read documents, and follow links through a navigable structure. | The system selects material using its search and ranking approach; results depend on the corpus and retrieval configuration. |
| Question shape | Useful when the answer requires following relationships, enumerating evidence, or combining information across linked documents. | Useful for source-localized lookup and broad discovery across collections, depending on the retriever and how the question is handled. |
| Governance | Optional provenance, verification, lifecycle, and freshness annotations can be reviewed alongside the documents; Git can show changes. | Metadata and review controls depend on the chosen retrieval stack; RAG itself does not mandate a governance scheme. |
| Implementation and upkeep | Requires authoring and maintaining structured files and links. The format does not supply a query or serving layer. | Requires maintaining the retrieval pipeline and any index or other infrastructure the system uses. RAG is an approach, not one fixed implementation. |
These are tendencies, not hard boundaries. A wiki can be searched, and a RAG system can retrieve across linked or richly annotated material. Choose based on where evidence lives and what the agent must do with it.

A 2026 arXiv preprint by Haoliang Ming, Feifei Li, Xiaoqing Wu, and Wenhui Que describes LLM-Wiki, a separate system that compiles source documents into structured, linked wiki pages and gives an agent search, read, and link-following operations. It is not an evaluation of Google’s OKF specification.

In the preprint’s reported comparisons, LLM-Wiki scored higher than LightRAG, its strongest graph-based baseline in the named comparisons, by the following F1-point differences:
- 2.0 points on HotpotQA
- 8.1 points on MuSiQue
- 6.4 points on 2WikiMultiHopQA
These are results for that system, those datasets, baselines, and experimental setup—not evidence that OKF itself beats RAG or that a wiki wins on every task. The paper also reports a counterexample on AuthTrace single-document questions: HippoRAG 2 scores 78.3 versus 76.0 for LLM-Wiki, while LLM-Wiki scores 70.4 overall versus 68.3 for HippoRAG 2. The authors’ results support a narrower takeaway: linked traversal can help with relationship-following and cross-document aggregation, while direct retrieval may suit a question answerable from one source.
How can you keep an agent’s wiki verifiable and current?
Treat structure and metadata as aids to governance, not as automatic quality controls. A useful bundle makes it possible to inspect where a claim came from and when it was checked, while a review process decides whether the claim should be trusted or updated.
- Record source materials and provenance where relevant, so a reviewer can trace a concept back to its basis.
- Use verification and lifecycle information to distinguish checked content from content that is pending, stale, or otherwise limited.
- Review changes in Git or another version-control workflow, especially when generated content is added or revised.
- Make the agent inspect source context rather than treating a frontmatter field or a link as proof of correctness.
- Decide separately how the bundle will be searched, served, or indexed; OKF does not supply that infrastructure.
The format can make these signals easier to preserve and inspect, but it cannot guarantee factual accuracy or freshness. That depends on source quality, maintenance, verification, and the way the consuming agent uses the information.
