There is no universal winner. Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) is a narrow protocol for separating the source of a supported HTTP request from the request content. A VPN routes traffic through a VPN provider, making that provider a central trust party. Tor is the broader anonymity system of the three; RFC 9458 describes it as capable of stronger guarantees than OHTTP, but with higher operational cost.
The right choice depends on what you are protecting: one supported app request, ordinary network traffic, or broader browsing anonymity. OHTTP is not a general-purpose browsing tunnel and is not a replacement for Tor. VPN privacy cannot be judged generically because the provider’s policies, technology and configuration matter.
The short answer
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Is OHTTP more private than a VPN? | Not as a general ranking. OHTTP splits visibility between an independent relay and gateway for selected requests; a VPN routes traffic through its provider. They solve different problems and require different trust assumptions. |
| Is OHTTP the same as Tor? | No. OHTTP protects particular HTTP exchanges when a service supports it. RFC 9458 characterizes Tor as a more robust system that can provide stronger guarantees at higher operational cost. |
| Does OHTTP hide my IP address? | From the OHTTP gateway, yes, when the relay and gateway are separate and correctly deployed. The relay sees the client-side connection, so OHTTP does not make your IP invisible to every network observer. |
| Does OHTTP protect all my web browsing? | No. It applies only to requests made by an OHTTP-enabled service or feature. It is not a device-wide browsing mode. |
| Which should I use? | Use OHTTP for a supported feature that needs limited unlinkability, a VPN when you deliberately trust a particular provider to route your traffic, and Tor when your priority is broader anonymity and you accept more friction. |
What OHTTP actually does
Oblivious HTTP is specified in RFC 9458, published by the Internet Engineering Task Force in January 2024. It forwards an encrypted HTTP message through two separate roles:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Relay: accepts the client’s transport connection and forwards the encapsulated message. It can see the client connection, but not the protected HTTP content.
- Gateway: receives the forwarded message, decrypts and processes the HTTP request, and returns an encapsulated response. It can read the request content, but it sees the relay as the source of its connection rather than the client’s direct transport address.
RFC 9458 summarizes the intended split this way: “The combination of encapsulation and relaying ensures that Oblivious Gateway Resource never sees the Client’s IP address and that the Oblivious Relay Resource never sees plaintext HTTP message content.” That statement describes the protocol’s division of visibility, not anonymity against every party.

How one OHTTP request travels
- The client obtains a gateway identity and public-key configuration, along with the identity or address of a relay.
- The client constructs the HTTP request for the destination service. It encrypts that request to the gateway using HPKE, the Hybrid Public Key Encryption scheme used by the protocol.
- The client sends the encapsulated request to the relay over its normal transport connection. The relay can identify the connecting client at the network layer, but the request body is protected.
- The relay forwards the encapsulated message to the gateway. The gateway decrypts it, processes the HTTP request and generates a response.
- The gateway encapsulates the response and sends it back through the relay, which returns it to the client.
RFC 9458 notes that each OHTTP exchange requires at least two ordinary HTTP requests: one from the client to the relay and one from the relay to the gateway. Encryption metadata, cryptographic processing and the extra hop can add overhead or latency.
Why the two operators matter
The privacy property depends on trust being divided between independent parties. If one organization controls both the relay and gateway, it can potentially combine the connection information seen by the relay with the request content seen by the gateway. A deployment also needs sound client configuration and correct key handling. OHTTP is therefore an architectural separation, not a magic label that guarantees privacy regardless of who operates the components.
OHTTP’s scope is deliberately narrow
RFC 9458 says that “Oblivious HTTP has limited applicability.” A service must provide an OHTTP relay and gateway arrangement, and the client must know how to use that arrangement. Most websites cannot be converted into OHTTP destinations by changing a browser setting alone.
The protocol is most useful for requests that do not need state carried between them. A request containing a cookie, account credential, stable identifier or identifying details can still allow the gateway or application to recognize the requester or link multiple requests. OHTTP hides the direct client connection from the gateway; it does not remove identity clues that the client voluntarily places in the HTTP message.

Where users may encounter it
OHTTP can operate invisibly inside a supported application. Mozilla says Firefox uses OHTTP for selected features, including some address-bar suggestion requests. This does not turn Firefox into an OHTTP tunnel for every tab, download or web connection, and Mozilla’s support material describes it as a technology rather than a general user-toggleable browsing mode.
OHTTP versus a VPN: different trust models
A VPN is a traffic-routing arrangement: a device sends traffic to a VPN provider, and the provider forwards it toward the destination. The provider is consequently a key trust party for the traffic it routes. The exact information available to that provider, what is retained, and what technical protections are used depend on the particular service and its configuration. The available evidence does not support a single claim about what all VPN providers can see or promise.
| Axis | OHTTP | VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Primary scope | Selected HTTP requests sent to a service that supports OHTTP. | Traffic routing through a particular VPN provider and device configuration. |
| Trust arrangement | Relay sees the client connection; gateway sees and processes request content. The roles should be operated separately. | The provider is a central trust party for traffic it routes. Evaluate that provider’s current policies and technical behavior. |
| IP visibility at the destination service | The gateway receives the relay’s connection rather than the client’s direct connection. | The destination generally receives traffic coming from the VPN path; exact behavior depends on the service and setup. |
| Coverage | Only enabled requests and features. | Potentially device or network traffic selected by the VPN configuration, but no generic coverage guarantee applies to every product. |
| Performance evidence here | At least two HTTP requests, added metadata and cryptographic work; latency may increase. | No comparative measurements were established. |
| Main failure mode | Unsupported service, colluding roles, identifying request content or traffic analysis can weaken unlinkability. | Provider policy, implementation and configuration may not match your assumptions. |
Is OHTTP more private than a VPN?
That question has no single answer because “private” can mean different things. For a supported telemetry or suggestion request, OHTTP can prevent the gateway from receiving the client’s direct IP while preventing the relay from reading the HTTP payload. A VPN does not use that same two-party split; it concentrates routing trust in the provider.
For general browsing, OHTTP does not compete with a VPN because it does not carry arbitrary browser traffic. A VPN may cover traffic that is actually routed through it, while OHTTP remains limited to integrations designed for the protocol. Conversely, OHTTP can reduce the amount of information any one participating operator sees for a particular request without asking a user to send all traffic through a provider.

Is OHTTP the same as Tor?
No. Tor is a broader anonymity system, whereas OHTTP is an HTTP message-forwarding protocol with a specific relay-and-gateway split. RFC 9458 states that OHTTP is simpler and less costly than more robust systems such as Tor, which can provide stronger guarantees at higher operational costs.
That comparison is about design goals and operational trade-offs, not a universal score. Tor is the closer choice when the goal is broader anonymity rather than protecting a small set of application requests. The Tor Project’s current documentation should be consulted for setup instructions and its current threat model; the evidence available here does not justify adding more specific claims about Tor’s implementation or guarantees.
When OHTTP is the better fit
- A feature sends small, independent HTTP requests and does not need a login cookie or long-lived session.
- The service already operates a relay and gateway under separate administrative control.
- You want to limit whether the service can associate request content with your direct network address, without routing all browsing through an anonymity system.
- You accept that the feature, rather than the whole browser, is protected.
When Tor is the better fit
- Your goal is broader browsing anonymity rather than privacy for one instrumented request.
- You are willing to accept more operational friction and possible performance cost in exchange for stronger stated guarantees.
- You can follow the Tor Project’s current guidance and avoid assumptions that exceed its documented threat model.
Does OHTTP hide your IP address?
OHTTP is designed so the gateway does not receive the client’s IP address directly. The relay, however, handles the client-side connection and can see the network source of that connection. The destination service may also infer information from the request itself, application logs or timing.
Therefore, “OHTTP hides my IP” is accurate only when qualified: it hides the client’s direct transport address from the gateway in a correctly separated deployment. It does not hide the address from the relay, the client’s access network or every observer able to perform traffic analysis.

Does OHTTP protect all web browsing?
No. An OHTTP-enabled feature can protect its own request while ordinary page loads, scripts, media, account sessions and other connections continue to use their normal paths. A browser may support OHTTP for one product feature without exposing a setting that applies it to arbitrary URLs.
Check the service’s documentation for three prerequisites: that the feature supports OHTTP, that a relay and gateway are available, and that the client has the required gateway key configuration. If any of those conditions is absent, there is no OHTTP protection for that request.

Identifying request content
OHTTP encrypts the request in transit to the gateway, but the gateway must decrypt and process it. A username, email address, account token, cookie, device identifier or distinctive free-text value can identify the requester after decryption. Repeating the same identifier across requests can also permit linkage.
Collusion or common ownership
The relay and gateway need separate operators for the intended split to hold. If they share logs, ownership or operational control, the separation may provide less practical privacy than the protocol diagram suggests.

Traffic analysis
RFC 9458 calls out traffic analysis, including timing, as outside OHTTP’s protection guarantees. Packet timing, volume and request patterns can provide clues even when the HTTP payload is encrypted between the client and relay.
Configuration and key errors
The client needs the correct gateway identity and key configuration. A stale, incorrect or malicious configuration can prevent requests from working or undermine the expected trust relationship. Service operators should document how clients obtain configuration and how gateway keys are rotated; users should rely on the application’s authenticated update path rather than copying settings from an unverified source.
Unsupported stateful workflows
OHTTP is most useful for independent requests. A workflow that requires a persistent login, a sequence of correlated actions or server-side state may expose identifying material or simply not fit the protocol’s intended use.

Performance, overhead and usability trade-offs
OHTTP adds a relay hop, encapsulation and cryptographic processing. The RFC’s minimum of two regular HTTP requests per protected request means additional network work even before application data is considered. Encryption metadata increases message size, and latency can rise when the relay and gateway are geographically or operationally distant.
Those costs are the price of a narrower privacy boundary, not evidence that OHTTP is slow in every deployment. No measured speed comparison was established for OHTTP, VPNs and Tor, so a precise percentage or universal ranking would be misleading. In practice, the effect depends on request size, connection reuse, relay and gateway locations, and the application’s tolerance for delay.
Choose by the privacy problem you actually have
| Your objective | Most appropriate starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Protect a supported suggestion, measurement or API request from direct IP association | OHTTP | The feature’s OHTTP support, independent relay and gateway operators, key configuration and handling of cookies or identifiers. |
| Route selected device or network traffic through one intermediary | A VPN, evaluated as a specific provider and configuration | Provider policies, technical behavior, jurisdictional claims and exactly which traffic the device sends through the tunnel. |
| Seek broader browsing anonymity | Tor | The Tor Project’s current documentation, supported use cases, setup requirements and operational trade-offs. |
| Hide request content from the relay while still allowing a service to process it | OHTTP | That the relay cannot decrypt payloads and that the gateway does not receive the client’s direct connection. |
| Protect arbitrary websites that do not implement OHTTP | Not OHTTP | Use an approach designed for general traffic, then assess its specific trust model rather than assuming OHTTP coverage. |
A practical checklist before relying on OHTTP
- Identify the protected feature. Confirm which request is OHTTP-enabled; do not assume the entire application or browser is covered.
- Confirm the roles. Find out who operates the relay and who operates the gateway. Separate administration is central to the privacy design.
- Inspect the request’s identity content. Determine whether cookies, credentials, account IDs or stable payload fields are sent.
- Understand retention and logging. Ask what the service, relay and gateway retain, because protocol separation does not dictate every operator’s logging practice.
- Account for traffic analysis. Treat timing and volume as residual signals, especially when the request pattern itself is distinctive.
- Plan for failure. Know whether the feature falls back to an ordinary request when OHTTP is unavailable, and whether that fallback changes your privacy expectation.
Common mistakes
- Calling OHTTP a VPN. OHTTP protects selected HTTP exchanges; it is not a general tunnel for a device’s traffic.
- Calling OHTTP a Tor replacement. Tor targets a broader anonymity problem and is described by RFC 9458 as offering stronger guarantees at higher cost.
- Assuming encryption removes identity. The gateway decrypts the request and can use whatever identifying data the application sends.
- Assuming a relay is automatically trustworthy. The relay should not see plaintext content, but it still sees the client-side connection and can observe traffic characteristics.
- Ranking every VPN by one rule. A VPN comparison is provider-specific; avoid treating an unspecified provider’s logging, jurisdiction or technical behavior as universal.
- Ignoring fallback behavior. If an application silently sends an ordinary request when OHTTP fails, the request may no longer receive the same separation.
What to remember
OHTTP is a targeted privacy protocol: the relay can see who connects, the gateway can process what is requested, and neither should see both when the deployment is correctly separated. Its benefits apply only to supported, suitably designed requests.
A VPN is a different trust decision centered on the provider that routes traffic. Tor addresses a broader anonymity goal and, according to RFC 9458, can provide stronger guarantees than OHTTP at higher operational cost. Choose according to scope, operator trust and the information your requests reveal—not by treating OHTTP, VPNs and Tor as interchangeable products.
