Choose OCRmyPDF when you need free, local, repeatable OCR, large batches, multilingual processing, or PDF/A-oriented archiving. Choose Adobe Acrobat Pro when you want a graphical application that combines OCR with text and image editing, redaction, forms, signatures, conversion, and document organization.
Both can turn an image-only scan into a searchable PDF. Neither is established by the available official documentation as a universal accuracy winner. OCR quality depends more on the scan, language, typography, layout, and settings than on a simple product label, so test representative files before committing to a production workflow.
What OCRmyPDF and Acrobat actually do
A scanned PDF can contain only page images. Searching, copying, or selecting words is impossible until optical character recognition (OCR) analyzes those images and associates text with the correct page locations. Adobe explains that “when you scan a paper document to PDF, the resulting file contains only image data, not searchable text” (Adobe documentation updated September 23, 2025).
OCRmyPDF adds an OCR text layer beneath the original page image. Its project documentation describes the result as searchable PDF/A output with text positioned for copy and paste while preserving the embedded image resolution. Optional image processing can deskew pages, clean defects, validate the resulting file, and optimize it. Recognition is provided through Tesseract, which the project documents as supporting more than 100 languages.

Acrobat’s Scan & OCR feature recognizes text in a scanned PDF and can produce searchable and editable PDF content. OCR is one part of a much larger desktop application that also handles editing, conversion, redaction, forms, signatures, page organization, and review. Acrobat can process one file or multiple files from the same workflow, with controls for page range and recognition language.
“Searchable” and “editable” are not identical outcomes. OCRmyPDF’s principal deliverable is a searchable text layer aligned with the scan; it is not intended to be a full page-layout editor. Acrobat can expose recognized words for editing, but the visual result still depends on the original scan’s layout and the recognition quality. In either product, keep the original scan so that an operator can verify any altered text or image.

When OCRmyPDF is the better choice
Large or repeatable batches
OCRmyPDF is built for a pipeline rather than a single click. You can apply the same command and options to folders of scans, schedule processing, capture exit statuses, and use multiple CPU cores. That consistency matters for archives, digitization projects, and departments that receive new scans every day. A script also makes the settings auditable: the language, cleanup, deskew, output type, and validation choices are visible instead of being hidden in a sequence of manual clicks.
PDF/A and archival output
If the deliverable must be suitable for long-term preservation, OCRmyPDF supports PDF/A output and validates the generated file. It keeps the page image while placing selectable text underneath, so the archival appearance remains tied to the source scan. This is different from rebuilding a document as a modern word-processing file, which can change line breaks, spacing, and visual evidence.
Local or offline processing
OCRmyPDF’s documented model is local execution. Once the software and its dependencies are installed, the files can be processed on the workstation or server without sending document content to a web service. That is useful for confidential records, disconnected environments, or organizations that require a predictable data path. You still need to secure the machine, temporary files, logs, and backups.
Multilingual collections
The project documents Tesseract recognition for more than 100 languages. You can select the language or language combination appropriate to a collection and apply it consistently in a batch. This does not guarantee equal quality for every script or typeface; a sample-file test remains necessary.

Trade-offs to accept
- You work in a terminal or build a wrapper around the command line rather than relying on a point-and-click editor.
- Installation includes system components such as Tesseract and Ghostscript, plus Python-related packages and fonts; optional image tools may be needed for particular cleanup operations.
- Distribution repositories can lag the newest OCRmyPDF release, so administrators must decide whether to use a package manager, a current Python environment, a container, or another supported route.
- OCRmyPDF does not replace a complete PDF editor. Editing recognized paragraphs, drawing redactions, creating web forms, applying signatures, or rearranging documents generally requires another application.
How to run an OCRmyPDF workflow
1. Choose a supported installation route
The current installation guidance lists Debian and Ubuntu packages, Fedora, Homebrew on macOS and Linux, MacPorts, native Windows, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), Docker, FreeBSD, uv, and pipx. Windows users can use native installation or WSL; 32-bit Windows is unsupported. Pick one route that your operating system team can update and reproduce.

2. Confirm the dependencies
Plan for Tesseract, Ghostscript, pypdfium2, fonts, and any optional image-processing tools required by your chosen features. Verify that the command is available in the same environment where the batch job will run. If a package-manager version is older than the current release, document that version so later operators understand any differences.
3. Process a representative file
A basic invocation is:
ocrmypdf input.pdf output.pdfFor a difficult scan, add only the options you have tested. OCRmyPDF supports options for deskewing, cleanup, language selection, PDF/A output, validation, and multi-core processing. For example, an operator might test:
ocrmypdf --deskew --language eng input.pdf output.pdfUse the language code appropriate to the document, and do not enable aggressive cleanup until you have checked that punctuation, stamps, faint handwriting, and small characters survive. For production, write output to a new file or directory rather than overwriting the source.
4. Inspect the output
- Search for names, numbers, dates, and uncommon words that appear on every page type.
- Copy a paragraph and compare it with the image for dropped characters, merged columns, and incorrect punctuation.
- Check rotated pages, tables, stamps, footnotes, and pages with different languages.
- Confirm that the PDF opens, passes the intended validation, and retains the expected image resolution.
5. Scale only after the sample passes
Once the sample is acceptable, run the same command against the batch and record the input-to-output mapping, language settings, software versions, and failures. Multi-core processing can improve throughput, but it does not correct recognition mistakes. Route failed files to a review queue instead of silently discarding them.
How to OCR a scan in Acrobat Pro
Single-file workflow
- Open the scanned PDF in Acrobat.
- Choose All tools > Scan & OCR.
- Select In this file.
- Set the page range and recognition language.
- Choose Recognize Text and wait for processing to finish.
- Search, select, and copy text, then inspect pages where accuracy matters.
Acrobat’s workflow is intentionally accessible to occasional users: the controls are visible, and the recognized result remains in the PDF you are already viewing. Adobe advises reviewing the output for accuracy and completeness and keeping a backup of the original scan.

Multiple-file workflow
- Open All tools > Scan & OCR.
- Select In multiple files.
- Add the PDFs, choose the page range and language, and start recognition.
- Review the generated files individually, especially if the source set contains mixed resolutions or languages.
This is useful for a small or occasional collection, but it is still a GUI process. If the same job must run every week with identical settings, a scripted OCRmyPDF pipeline is usually easier to reproduce.

Accuracy: what is known and how to test it
The official materials used for this comparison do not publish a controlled, current head-to-head benchmark of OCRmyPDF with Acrobat OCR. It would therefore be misleading to declare one product universally more accurate.
Recognition quality is affected by scan resolution, skew, noise, compression, contrast, typography, language, columns, tables, marginal notes, and the settings selected by the operator. A clean 300-dpi typed page can behave very differently from a crooked fax, a carbon copy, or a form with handwriting. The OCR engine may also make different mistakes when a page contains several languages.
A practical acceptance test
- Collect a small set that represents the real archive: clean pages, poor pages, tables, rotated pages, stamps, and every important language.
- Run the same files through the proposed settings in each product.
- Measure the errors that matter to your work: names, account numbers, dates, totals, headings, and search hits—not just a general impression.
- Check whether copying text preserves reading order and whether the PDF remains visually faithful to the scan.
- Have the people who will use the files search and edit them, then record which failures require manual correction.
Choose the workflow that meets your acceptance threshold with the least operational effort. If both pass, use automation, privacy requirements, editing needs, and total maintenance cost to decide.
Installation, maintenance, and deployment considerations
OCRmyPDF administration
Package managers and containers simplify repeatable deployment, but each environment has update responsibilities. Keep the OCRmyPDF version, Tesseract language data, Ghostscript version, fonts, and operating-system packages documented together. Test upgrades against a fixed set of sample PDFs because a dependency change can alter text output or image preprocessing.
Use separate input, working, and output locations. Restrict permissions on temporary files and logs, monitor disk space for large images, and preserve failed inputs for reprocessing. A job that exits with an error should be visible to an operator; do not treat the existence of an output filename as proof that every page was recognized correctly.

Acrobat administration
Acrobat is simpler to start because OCR is integrated into the application, but organizations must manage licenses, supported operating systems, updates, user permissions, and the deployment terms of the selected plan. Confirm those requirements for the exact Acrobat edition before placing sensitive documents into a managed workflow.
Hardware and source quality
Neither product can recover information that is absent from the scan. Rescan critical pages at an appropriate resolution, keep pages flat and aligned, avoid unnecessary compression, and capture all page edges. Better source images often improve results more than switching products.

OCRmyPDF is open-source software. The software itself does not require a subscription, although organizations may incur costs for hardware, storage, engineering time, support, consulting, or a managed deployment.
Acrobat Pro uses a subscription plan. The Adobe business pricing page displayed US$19.99 per month on an annual, billed-monthly commitment or US$239.88 per year for Pro when checked. Treat those figures as time-sensitive: regional taxes, promotions, plan changes, and contract terms can alter the amount and available features.
Common failure modes and fixes
The PDF still cannot be searched
Confirm that OCR actually ran and that the output file—not the original image-only scan—is open. In OCRmyPDF, inspect the command result and logs; in Acrobat, confirm that Recognize Text completed. If the source contains an existing but unusable text layer, process a clean copy and compare the results.

Columns, tables, sidebars, and complex forms challenge every OCR system. Try a cleaner scan, deskewing, or a different language setting, then verify copied text. For records where reading order is legally or operationally important, retain the image and perform human review.

Characters are missing or invented
Check resolution, contrast, compression, and the selected language. Disable cleanup that erases faint marks, or rescan the page. Search-based review should include identifiers and numbers because a single character error can change meaning.
The file is too large or slow
Preserve the required image quality, then use the product’s optimization options cautiously. OCRmyPDF can use multiple CPU cores and optimize output; Acrobat users can process files in smaller groups. Do not reduce resolution until you have confirmed that the archive or legal requirement permits it.
Installation fails on Windows
Use a supported native Windows route or WSL, and verify that you are not running 32-bit Windows, which OCRmyPDF does not support. Check that Tesseract, Ghostscript, fonts, and the Python environment are visible to the same user or service account that runs the job.

It can replace Acrobat for the narrow job of adding searchable OCR to PDFs, especially when local batch processing and PDF/A output are the priorities. It cannot replace Acrobat as an all-purpose PDF workstation. If your daily work includes editing page content, redacting information, creating web forms, applying signatures, converting documents, or organizing files visually, Acrobat’s integrated tools remove the need to assemble several separate utilities.
A mixed workflow is also reasonable: use OCRmyPDF to create consistent, validated archival derivatives, then open selected files in a PDF editor for human correction, redaction, or signing. Keep the original scan and document which derivative was used for each purpose.
Bottom line
For searchable scanned documents alone, OCRmyPDF is the stronger fit when you value free local execution, automation, multilingual Tesseract support, batch throughput, and PDF/A-oriented preservation. Acrobat Pro is the stronger fit when OCR must sit inside a polished graphical workflow for editing, redaction, forms, signatures, and document management. Since no official head-to-head benchmark establishes a universal accuracy leader, make the final choice with a representative sample of your own scans and an explicit review standard.
