To recover an existing OCI database, open its DB system and database, then choose Actions → Restore and select the latest recovery point, a timestamp, or an SCN. To make a separate system from an automatic backup, use that backup’s Create database action, or choose Create database from backup for a point-in-time copy or the latest archived redo backup. These are different workflows: ordinary Clone a DB System copies the system as it exists when cloning starts, not its state at a selected historical recovery point.

Choose the right OCI recovery workflow

Use an in-place restore when the existing database needs to be recovered. Use backup-based creation when you need a separate DB system—for example, to investigate a problem or work with a copy while preserving the source. Oracle documents these procedures separately as Recover a Database Using the Console and Create a DB System from a Backup.

Restore the existing database from an automatic backup

Check access and recovery prerequisites

The database must be able to access the backup destination: Autonomous Recovery Service or Object Storage. Oracle recommends a service gateway for Object Storage connectivity. Recovery Service requires a dedicated network path in each database VCN. An administrator must also grant the IAM permissions needed for the operation; confirm the applicable policy with your OCI administrator because the required statement depends on the tenancy and operation.

The DB Systems console lists managed backups, but it does not show unmanaged backups created directly with RMAN or DBCLI. If the recovery point you expect is missing, check whether it was created outside OCI’s managed backup workflow.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Run the restore

  1. In the OCI Console, open DB Systems and select the DB system.
  2. Open its Databases tab, then select the database.
  3. Choose Actions → Restore.
  4. Select a recovery target: Restore to the latest, Restore to a timestamp, or Restore to SCN. For an SCN, use a valid Oracle System Change Number; Oracle notes that it can be found by querying the database host or checking online or archived logs.
  5. Select Restore and confirm the operation.

Oracle describes Restore to the latest as returning the database to the last known good state with the least possible data loss. If a restore fails, review the host RMAN logs, correct the reported errors, and then try another restore option if needed.

Validate settings after recovery

A restore resets the default password profile. Also check encryption: if customer-managed keys were enabled after the selected timestamp or SCN, the recovered database is restored without customer-managed keys enabled. You can change encryption settings after the restore, so verify the database’s key configuration before returning it to service.

Create a new DB system from an automatic backup

This workflow provisions a target DB system from a selected backup; it does not replace the source. Oracle supports backups stored in Autonomous Recovery Service or Object Storage. Eligible automatic backup sources are a level 0 weekly backup or a level 1 incremental backup made after the most recent level 0 backup. Other documented sources include on-demand full backups, standalone backups, the last archived redo log backup, and eligible point-in-time copies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the appropriate backup workflow

  • Daily automatic backup or on-demand full backup: open the source DB system and database, find the backup in Backups, and choose Create database from that backup’s Actions menu.
  • Latest archived redo backup or timestamp-based copy: open the database details and choose Create database from backup.
  • Standalone or long-term-retention backup: select it under Resources → Standalone backups.

Meet target DB system requirements

  • The target must use the same shape type as the source database, such as single-node to single-node.
  • The target’s Oracle Database version must be equal to or later than the version represented by the backup.
  • Storage defaults to the backup data size rounded up to the nearest available storage size; you can choose a larger size.
  • The target can be placed in the source availability domain or, across regions, a different one.
  • A backup in a security-zone compartment cannot be used to create a target in a compartment outside a security zone.

OCI may apply cloud-recommended defaults, including memory settings based on the selected shape. These can differ slightly from the source configuration and can be adjusted after creation.

Understand point-in-time copy limits

For a point-in-time copy, the timestamp sets the latest data included in the new database. Oracle’s documentation states, “The timestamp must be within the recovery window of the database.” The requested time must also fall within the incarnation represented by the automatic backups; it cannot fall between overlapping incarnations.

Creation may fail if structural database changes—such as creating or dropping a tablespace—occurred after the requested timestamp. OCI also does not allow another point-in-time copy to start while one is already in progress.

Check backup destination and retention before relying on a recovery point

Automatic backups can use Autonomous Recovery Service or Object Storage, but the choices displayed in a tenancy depend on database version, shape, regional capacity, and tenancy limits. Oracle’s current Base Database Service documentation says Recovery Service requires Oracle Database 19.18 or later; Ampere A1 shape-based DB systems can use only Object Storage. Check the backup settings in your own tenancy rather than assuming a destination is available everywhere.

Backup destination Documented retention choices
Autonomous Recovery Service Bronze: 14 days; Silver: 35 days (default); Gold: 65 days; Platinum: 95 days; or a custom policy.
Object Storage 7, 15, 30 days (default), 45 days, or 60 days.

Real-time data protection continuously transfers redo changes to Recovery Service and is an extra-cost option. Retention and destination settings affect which recovery points will be available when you need them. Changing the backup destination triggers an immediate full backup by default, and that backup cannot be rescheduled.

How ordinary DB system cloning differs

Clone a DB System copies the source as it exists when the cloning operation runs. It is not the way to choose an automatic backup or recover to a historical timestamp. The ordinary clone workflow can use new SSH keys and a new administrator password, and the clone may use a different VCN and subnet.

For a DB system with a Data Guard association, the clone does not copy the association or its connections; start cloning from the primary. A RAC clone creates a new Grid Infrastructure configuration and omits some manually added resources and customizations. Oracle says to expect at least an hour for ordinary RAC cloning; that estimate does not describe a restore or a backup-based create operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Oracle documents ordinary cloning as unsupported for DB systems using Oracle Database 21c with ASM. For ASM systems, Grid Infrastructure software must be version 19.9 or later. Before applying ordinary clone guidance to a backup-based create workflow, review Oracle’s separate guidance on customer-managed encryption keys and the inherited TDE wallet password.

Before you start: operational checklist

  • Decide whether you are replacing the current database state, creating a separate system from a backup, or copying the system as it exists now.
  • Confirm that the intended managed backup is available and that the database can reach its backup destination.
  • For backup-based creation, verify target shape type, database version, storage, availability domain, and compartment restrictions.
  • For timestamp recovery or creation, record the intended time or SCN and account for recovery-window and incarnation limits.
  • After an in-place restore, validate the password profile and customer-managed key state before resuming normal use.
