Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and ocean iron fertilization (OIF) are both proposed ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods, but they remove carbon through fundamentally different pathways. OAE changes seawater chemistry by adding alkalinity, increasing the ocean’s capacity to absorb and retain carbon dioxide as dissolved inorganic carbon. OIF adds iron to waters where this micronutrient limits phytoplankton growth; lasting removal depends on some of the resulting organic carbon sinking into the deep ocean and remaining there.
Neither approach has been demonstrated at climate-relevant scale. A bloom, a quantity of alkaline material added, or a short-term change in seawater chemistry is not by itself proof of net atmospheric carbon removal. The decisive evidence is measured net uptake after lifecycle emissions, followed by verification of how much carbon remains stored, for how long, and with what ecological effects.
At a glance: OAE changes chemistry, OIF changes biology
| Question | Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) | Ocean iron fertilization (OIF) |
|---|---|---|
| Core intervention | Add an alkaline material or solution, or use another pathway that raises seawater alkalinity. | Add iron to surface waters where iron limits phytoplankton growth. |
| Intended carbon pathway | Higher alkalinity shifts carbonate chemistry, allowing additional atmospheric CO2 to enter the ocean and remain in dissolved inorganic carbon forms. | More phytoplankton photosynthesis lowers surface CO2; durable removal requires organic carbon to sink below the surface and avoid rapid remineralization. |
| What is already established | Carbonate-system thermodynamics are well understood, but field efficacy, mixing behavior and ecological effects remain under study. | Iron can stimulate phytoplankton production in iron-limited waters, but extra production does not automatically become deep-ocean sequestration. |
| National Academies durability category (2022) | Medium-high: greater than 100 years. This is an assessment category, not a guarantee for every project. | Medium: 10–100 years, with strong dependence on location and biological-pump efficiency. This is also an assessment category. |
| Principal concerns | Local high-pH and low-CO2 excursions, suspended solids, added trace metals or other material, and lifecycle impacts that vary by feedstock and deployment. | Ecosystem and food-web changes, nutrient redistribution, uncertain export efficiency, and uncertainty over the amount and duration of stored carbon. |
| Core verification task | Measure alkalinity added, carbonate-system response, mixing and dilution, project emissions and net atmospheric uptake. | Measure biological response, export below the mixed layer, later remineralization, storage, nutrient feedbacks and the net atmospheric effect. |
This distinction matters because the two methods produce very different evidence. OAE is designed around a chemical capacity change that can persist after deployment, while OIF relies on a chain of biological events, only one part of which is the initial bloom.
How ocean alkalinity enhancement is supposed to remove carbon
Alkalinity changes the carbonate system
Seawater contains dissolved inorganic carbon in several related forms, including dissolved carbon dioxide, bicarbonate and carbonate ions. Adding alkalinity changes the balance among these species. At a sufficiently mixed regional scale, that shift can lower the concentration of dissolved CO2 relative to the atmosphere and create a gradient that draws more atmospheric CO2 into the ocean.

Once absorbed, the carbon is retained mainly as dissolved inorganic carbon rather than as a short-lived biological product. The process does not mean that every unit of added material immediately removes a matching unit of atmospheric CO2; air–sea equilibration, circulation, dilution and the material’s chemistry determine the timing and amount.
Materials and pathways are not interchangeable
OAE is a category of interventions, not one standardized technology. A project might add a dissolved alkaline solution, disperse a mineral, or generate alkalinity through another chemical pathway. The source, purity, particle size, energy used for processing and delivery route all affect how quickly alkalinity becomes available and what else enters the marine environment.
Those details also determine lifecycle emissions. Mining, calcining, grinding, transport, pumping and vessel operations can emit greenhouse gases. A credible claim therefore has to subtract those emissions from the carbon uptake attributable to the intervention.

Potential ocean-acidification benefit has limits
Increasing alkalinity can help counter some effects of ocean acidification in the treated water by increasing buffering capacity. NOAA describes this as a possible benefit, not an automatic reversal of acidification. Local chemistry can move in undesirable directions if dosing, mixing or material choice creates extreme conditions, and the broader ocean response depends on transport and dilution.
How ocean iron fertilization is supposed to remove carbon
Iron targets a micronutrient limitation
In several high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll regions, phytoplankton growth is constrained by the availability of iron. Adding iron can stimulate photosynthesis, producing a bloom that consumes dissolved CO2 near the surface. Iron-induced production has been observed in experiments, so the immediate biological response is not the central unknown.

The difficult step is export and retention
Photosynthesis transfers carbon from dissolved CO2 into organic matter. For OIF to qualify as durable CDR, a meaningful fraction of that organic carbon must leave the surface or winter mixed layer, sink to depth and remain isolated from the atmosphere long enough to count as storage. Bacteria, zooplankton and other organisms can respire or consume the material, returning carbon to the water column. Circulation can then bring that carbon back to the surface.
Consequently, chlorophyll, primary-production measurements or a visible bloom cannot establish net atmospheric removal. Researchers must follow particles and dissolved carbon below the mixed layer, quantify remineralization, and account for later air–sea exchange.
What experiments have shown
A 2018 review of ocean iron fertilization experiments found enhanced primary production but generally no statistically significant detected increase in export below the winter mixed layer, with the Southern Ocean EIFEX experiment as the notable exception discussed in that review. The National Research Council reported roughly a dozen field experiments by 2015, conducted primarily for fundamental scientific research rather than as demonstrations of commercial-scale removal.
Why a bloom or an alkalinity increase is not proof of removal
OIF: production is an intermediate result
A bloom demonstrates that added iron affected phytoplankton under the observed conditions. It does not reveal how much carbon was exported, where it was remineralized, or whether the resulting atmospheric drawdown persisted. Blooms can also alter food webs, nutrient use and the cycling of elements such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Those effects may change productivity elsewhere and must be included in a net assessment.
OAE: added alkalinity is not the same as atmospheric uptake
Measuring the dose of alkaline material establishes how much alkalinity was introduced, not how much new atmospheric carbon entered the ocean. Material can be unevenly distributed, react at different rates, or be lost through processes that reduce the intended chemical effect. Measurements need to resolve alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, pH, temperature, salinity, currents and mixing over time.

Net accounting applies to both methods
For either approach, the relevant quantity is net carbon dioxide removal: atmospheric uptake attributable to the intervention minus emissions from producing, transporting and deploying it, plus any induced emissions or leakage. A project that reports only tonnes of material, hectares affected or peak chlorophyll is not reporting a complete removal result.
Durability: assessment categories, not project guarantees
The National Academies’ 2022 synthesis places OAE in a medium-high durability category, defined as greater than 100 years, and OIF in a medium category spanning 10–100 years. These labels compare expected storage behavior among CDR approaches; they do not promise that every OAE project stores carbon for more than a century or that every OIF deployment lasts a particular number of years.
OAE’s potential durability follows from the relatively slow removal of added alkalinity from seawater. The actual duration still depends on the pathway, where the alkalinity is delivered, how it reacts, and how ocean circulation redistributes the resulting dissolved carbon.
OIF has a wider range because storage depends on biological-pump efficiency and the deployment region. Some organic carbon can be recycled rapidly in the upper ocean, while another fraction may reach the deep ocean. A durability claim must therefore identify the depth and reservoir being counted, the modeled or observed remineralization rate, and the period over which atmospheric re-equilibration is evaluated.
What the 2026 OIF model does—and does not—show
A 2026 Nature study modeled multi-region iron fertilization and estimated 1.1–5.3 parts per million (ppm) of net atmospheric CO2 drawdown after 60 years of fertilization under its scenarios. The authors also found that more than half of the modeled drawdown was re-emitted within decades after fertilization stopped.

Those figures are model results, not measurements from a field deployment. They depend on the study’s assumptions about ocean regions, dosing, circulation, biology, climate feedbacks and post-deployment behavior. The study also found different climate-benefit and ecological-risk trade-offs among regions. Its ppm range should not be placed in a direct league table against an OAE potential estimate: the methods, spatial scales and evidence bases are different.
Environmental and operational risks
OAE risks depend on material and dose
- High-pH and low-CO2 hotspots: poorly mixed additions can expose organisms to abrupt chemical changes even when the wider region shows a smaller effect.
- Particles and turbidity: mineral deployment can create suspended solids that affect light penetration, feeding and gill or filter-feeding processes.
- Trace contaminants: source material may contain metals or other substances that require characterization and control.
- Feedstock and energy impacts: extraction, processing and transport can add emissions or damage ecosystems on land as well as at sea.
- Uneven exposure: currents and stratification can concentrate material in ways that differ from a project’s average-dose calculation.
OIF risks involve food webs and nutrient redistribution
- Food-web shifts: a bloom can favor some organisms and disadvantage others, changing grazing pressure and species composition.
- Nutrient displacement: consuming nutrients in one region can alter productivity downstream or in later seasons.
- Low export efficiency: extra production may be respired near the surface instead of becoming deep storage.
- Biogeochemical side effects: altered oxygen, nitrogen and other elemental cycles can create effects beyond the target patch.
- Regional variability: iron response and ecological risk differ with species, season, circulation and baseline nutrient conditions.
Neither method is environmentally neutral, and neither has a single risk profile that applies to every ocean region. Dose, location, timing, material, mixing and monitoring design are decisive.
Measurement, reporting and verification requirements
What an OAE project must demonstrate
- Material characterization: document alkalinity content, impurities, particle properties and the origin of the feedstock.
- Deployment accounting: record the mass or molar amount delivered, energy use, vessel activity and any losses before release.
- Carbonate-system response: measure total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, pH, temperature and salinity before and after deployment.
- Mixing and dilution: use repeated observations and circulation analysis to determine where the alkalinity moved and how concentration changed.
- Air–sea exchange: estimate the additional atmospheric uptake attributable to the intervention rather than treating all dissolved carbon change as removal.
- Lifecycle emissions: subtract emissions from extraction, processing, transport and operations to report net removal.
- Ecological monitoring: track organisms, suspended material, trace substances and biological responses at the treatment site and appropriate reference sites.
What an OIF project must demonstrate
- Iron delivery: report chemical form, dose, distribution, persistence and the energy and emissions associated with deployment.
- Biological response: measure phytoplankton composition, chlorophyll, primary production and grazing, not just surface color.
- Export below the mixed layer: quantify sinking particles and carbon flux at depth, with sampling that captures patch movement and time lags.
- Remineralization and storage: determine where exported carbon is respired, how quickly it returns to dissolved inorganic carbon, and whether circulation reconnects it with the atmosphere.
- Nutrient and oxygen effects: monitor nitrogen, phosphorus, silica, oxygen and related ecosystem changes inside and outside the fertilized patch.
- Net atmospheric effect: combine observed uptake, export, circulation, induced effects and lifecycle emissions into a transparent removal estimate.
Both protocols require controls or reference areas, uncertainty ranges and public methods. A single cruise or a short observation window cannot resolve a storage claim that depends on years or decades of circulation.

Ask what quantity is being reported
“Carbon removed” can mean several different things: carbon fixed by photosynthesis, carbon exported below a measurement depth, additional dissolved inorganic carbon in seawater, or modeled atmospheric drawdown after emissions. These are not interchangeable. The claim should define its system boundary and units.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the counterfactual
Removal must be measured against what would have happened without the intervention. Natural blooms, seasonal alkalinity changes, storms and advection can produce signals that resemble treatment effects. Reference observations and a stated baseline are essential.

Inspect the time horizon
A result measured days after deployment cannot establish multi-century storage. Look for a specified storage reservoir, a modeled or observed return pathway, and an explanation of how uncertainty changes over time.
Separate modeled potential from demonstrated performance
Global potential studies and scenario models can test what might happen under assumed deployment conditions. Field experiments test local processes. Neither alone proves a commercial-scale removal rate. Strong reporting labels modeled, laboratory, mesocosm and field evidence separately.
Which approach is better?
There is no evidence-based universal winner. OAE has a more direct chemical storage concept and a higher comparative durability category, but its practical performance, material impacts and ecological consequences remain pathway-dependent. OIF can trigger a measurable biological response in suitable waters, yet the fraction that becomes durable deep-ocean storage is difficult to verify and may be modest.

The appropriate comparison depends on the decision being made:
| If the priority is… | The relevant question is… |
|---|---|
| Longer-lived storage potential | Can the project demonstrate persistent alkalinity and dissolved-carbon storage at the chosen site, including mixing and circulation effects? |
| Fast biological response | Does the observed bloom produce verified export and storage, rather than only increased primary production? |
| Low lifecycle emissions | What are the emissions and upstream impacts of producing, transporting and deploying the intervention? |
| Environmental acceptability | What local and downstream ecological changes occur at the proposed dose and scale, and how would operations stop if thresholds are exceeded? |
| Credible carbon credits or policy claims | Are net atmospheric uptake, storage fate, uncertainty and monitoring data independently reviewable? |
What a credible deployment report should contain
- A precise intervention description, location, dates, dose and operating conditions.
- Baseline and reference-site measurements sufficient to distinguish treatment effects from natural variability.
- Material or iron chemistry, impurities and complete energy and emissions inventories.
- Direct observations of the relevant carbon pathway: carbonate chemistry for OAE; export and remineralization for OIF.
- A time-resolved estimate of net atmospheric removal, with confidence intervals and sensitivity to alternative assumptions.
- Storage duration expressed for a defined reservoir, not an unqualified permanence claim.
- Ecological monitoring results, including adverse findings and mitigation or stop criteria.
- Data, models and calculation boundaries that outside scientists can audit.
Bottom line
OAE and OIF should not be treated as two versions of the same ocean solution. OAE attempts to increase the ocean’s chemical capacity to absorb and retain CO2; OIF attempts to move carbon through a biological production-and-export chain. OAE’s storage mechanism is assessed as longer-lived, while OIF’s outcome depends heavily on whether exported organic carbon remains isolated.
For both, the standard for a credible climate claim is the same: demonstrate net atmospheric uptake after lifecycle emissions, document storage fate and duration, monitor ecological effects, and disclose uncertainty. Until those measurements exist at meaningful deployment scales, modeled potential and experimental responses should remain distinct from proven climate-relevant removal.
