When Obsidian reports a YAML front matter parsing error, the problem is usually in the metadata block at the top of the note—not in the Markdown body. Terry Zhao describes a browser-based fixer that checks that block, points to a line with a detected problem, and proposes a small set of repairs. The author says the tool processes pasted text in the browser without uploading it; that privacy claim has not been independently verified here. Review any proposed edit before replacing your metadata.
What YAML front matter does in an Obsidian note
Obsidian stores note properties as YAML at the top of a Markdown file. A block commonly begins with three hyphens, contains property names and values, and ends with another line of three hyphens. For example:
---
tags:
- project
status: active
---
Note content begins here.
The properties help describe and organize a note; the text after the closing delimiter is the note body. A syntax problem or missing delimiter can interfere with reading that metadata. Property names must be unique within a note, according to Obsidian’s Properties documentation.
How to fix a parsing error safely
- Keep an original. Copy the front matter block before editing, or duplicate the note. This gives you a way back if a repair changes the meaning of a value.
- Find the metadata boundary. Check that the block starts at the beginning of the file with
---and has a closing---before the note body. - Inspect the reported line. If using Zhao’s fixer, the author says it checks the front matter rather than the entire Markdown note and identifies a line associated with a detected problem. A line pointer can narrow the search, but it does not establish that all properties or the body are valid.
- Compare the proposed repair with your intent. Check spelling, indentation, delimiters, and whether a value should be text, a number, a date, a checkbox, or a list. Obsidian documents these property types, but the appropriate type depends on how you use the property.
- Apply the change and reopen the note. Confirm that Obsidian displays the intended properties and that the note body remains intact. If the error persists, restore the original and investigate the specific line rather than making broader automatic changes.
What the featured fixer says it changes
In his DEV Community article, Terry Zhao describes a browser-based YAML Frontmatter Validator & Fixer. He says it checks the front matter block, identifies a line associated with a detected problem, and can propose these repairs:
#1 Best Overall
- Crisp writing pages provide plenty of space for personal reflections, sketching, or for recording favorite quotations or poems.
- Premium 120 gsm paper takes pen or pencil beautifully.
- Paper is acid-free and of archival quality.
- Light gray lines subtly guide your writing.
- A ribbon bookmark keeps your place.
- Add a missing closing
---delimiter. - Trim trailing whitespace.
- Quote selected values, including examples such as
yes,no, and007, where interpretation may not match the writer’s intent. - Show changes line by line for review.
These are the author’s descriptions of the tool, not an independently verified feature list or a guarantee that every YAML or Obsidian parsing issue will be fixed. In particular, quoting a value changes how it is represented: confirm that the resulting text is what your templates, searches, and plugins expect.
Why seemingly small YAML details can cause trouble
A missing closing delimiter
If the opening --- has no matching closing delimiter, the boundary between metadata and note content is unclear. Zhao lists adding the closing delimiter as a repair the fixer can propose. Before accepting it, make sure the proposed insertion belongs after the last property and before the body.

Tabs and indentation
Zhao identifies tabs used for indentation as a common source of trouble. If a nested list or value looks misaligned, inspect the spacing around it and make the indentation consistent. The article describes examples from the author’s experience, not an exhaustive YAML specification or a universal account of how every parser behaves.

The author calls out values such as yes, no, and 007 as cases that can be interpreted differently than intended. If a value is meant to be literal text, quoting it may make that intent clearer; if it is meant to have another type, preserve that type. Do not accept a quote or other conversion simply because a validator suggests it.

Duplicate property names
Obsidian’s documentation says property names must be unique within a note. If the metadata contains the same property name more than once, decide which value is intended and consolidate the entries rather than relying on a fixer that is only described as addressing the cases above.
Using Obsidian’s built-in property editing instead
You do not have to use a separate fixer to edit metadata. Obsidian’s official help says properties can be added using the Add file property command, the Cmd/Ctrl+; shortcut, the More actions menu, or by typing --- at the beginning of a file. The documentation also notes that nested properties and bulk editing are not supported as native features. If your issue is a straightforward property edit, the built-in controls may be enough; if you need to diagnose raw YAML syntax, inspect the source block directly.

Privacy and compatibility: what to verify
Zhao describes the fixer as processing pasted note text in the browser without uploading it. That is the author’s claim; this article does not independently verify the implementation or network behavior. If a note contains sensitive information, avoid pasting the full note into a tool unless you are comfortable with its handling. Because the fixer is described as checking only the front matter, it should not be treated as a validator for the full Markdown document. The available description also does not establish compatibility with every YAML parser, Obsidian plugin, or property convention.
