The most important Obsidian privacy decision is whether your remote Sync vault uses end-to-end encryption. That setting protects data stored on and transmitted to Obsidian’s servers, but it does not encrypt the vault folder on your computer or phone. Local-device protection therefore requires separate operating-system or filesystem security.

For safety, keep an independent copy of the vault before replacing a remote vault or attempting recovery. For editing, choose Live Preview or Source mode according to your writing workflow and the compatibility of your plugins and themes. Obsidian’s current documentation does not establish a particular toggle that produces a measurable speed increase, so treat “faster” as a careful, low-risk configuration goal rather than a promised benchmark result.

Understand what each Obsidian setting can actually protect

Obsidian has two different security boundaries:

  • Local vault: the folder stored on each device. Sync encryption does not encrypt this folder.
  • Remote Sync vault: the copy held by Obsidian’s servers and the communication between your devices and those servers. End-to-end encryption is designed for this boundary.

Obsidian states in its Security and privacy documentation, “Your choice only affects your remote vault. Obsidian doesn’t encrypt your local vault.” Someone who can unlock your computer, access an unencrypted backup, or read a synced local folder is outside the protection provided by the Sync encryption choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction should determine your settings plan. Use Sync’s encryption option to reduce exposure of the remote copy, and use your device’s login, full-disk encryption, account permissions, and backup controls to protect local copies. The Obsidian documentation supplied for this guide does not prescribe a particular operating-system setting, so do not treat Sync as a replacement for those controls.

Choose end-to-end encryption for a private remote vault

What Obsidian’s end-to-end option does

For a newly created remote vault, Obsidian documents end-to-end encryption as the default option. With that choice, the encryption password is held by you rather than saved by Obsidian. The documentation identifies AES-256-GCM and scrypt with salt as implementation details. Those details describe how the feature is implemented; they are not, by themselves, a guarantee against every threat or an independent security audit.

The practical benefit is that Obsidian says it cannot read the contents of an end-to-end encrypted remote vault. The practical cost is recoverability: the password is part of the key material needed to connect another device. Obsidian Help states, “If you ever lose or forget the encryption password, you won’t be able to connect additional vaults to your remote vault.”

Store the password before you depend on Sync

Save the encryption password in a secure location that you can retrieve when setting up a second device or rebuilding a vault. Do not rely on memory, a note inside the encrypted vault, or a single device that could be lost with the vault. The documentation does not require or endorse a particular password manager, so choose a secure storage method that fits your existing account-recovery process and make sure your trusted successor could find it if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that Obsidian support can reset this password. If it is lost, the remote vault remains unusable for connecting additional vaults. The recovery procedure is replacement of the remote vault, not decryption of the old one.

End-to-end versus standard encryption

Choice Privacy boundary Recovery and convenience Best fit
End-to-end encryption Obsidian says it cannot read the encrypted remote vault; data is encrypted before or during Sync communication and storage. You must retain the encryption password. Losing it prevents connecting additional devices to that remote vault. People who prioritize keeping the remote copy unreadable to the service and can manage a durable password backup.
Standard encryption Uses encryption for the remote service, but the key is managed by Obsidian according to its documentation. More convenient for access and account recovery because you do not have a separate user-held encryption password. People who value easier access and recovery over user-held end-to-end key control.

The choice applies to the remote vault, not to local files. If your threat model includes a stolen laptop, an unlocked phone, or an exposed backup drive, address those risks separately instead of changing Sync encryption and assuming the local folder is protected.

Make an independent backup before Sync recovery or replacement

Sync history is useful, but it is not the same as an independent backup. Before you replace a remote vault, disconnect devices as part of a recovery process, or make a major change that could propagate across devices, preserve the data currently available on a trusted local device.

Obsidian’s recovery guidance recommends a full backup. Its examples are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Copy the entire vault folder to another location.
  • Create a ZIP archive of the vault folder.

An external SSD is one possible destination for that copy, but it is a storage option rather than an Obsidian requirement or endorsement. Keep the backup separate from the live vault so a synchronization mistake cannot modify both copies at once. Include hidden configuration files if you want to preserve appearance and settings; the safest way to do that is to copy or archive the complete vault folder rather than selecting only individual notes.

Document the state of the vault

Before changing anything, note which device contains the most complete local data, whether recent attachments open correctly, and which Sync account and remote vault you intend to keep. This short record helps you avoid choosing an older or incomplete device as the source for a replacement remote vault.

When the encryption password is lost

Obsidian’s documented route is a rebuild, not a password bypass. Use this order:

  1. Back up the locally available vault data by copying the folder or creating an archive.
  2. Disconnect the affected devices from the old remote-vault arrangement as directed by Obsidian’s recovery instructions.
  3. Create a replacement remote vault with a new encryption choice and a new password you can retain securely.
  4. Reconnect devices one at a time, using the backed-up local data as your reference so you do not overwrite the best copy accidentally.
  5. Verify notes, attachments, and links on the rebuilt setup before treating it as your only working copy.

Do not delete the old local folders until the replacement has been checked. A backup made after a synchronization conflict may already contain the wrong version, so preserve the pre-recovery copy as well.

Use Sync version history as a recovery layer, not your only backup

Obsidian’s Version history documentation describes restoring earlier notes and deleted files when the Sync core plugin is enabled. Retention is plan-dependent and differs between notes and attachments:

Note versions 1 month 12 months Current periods stated in Obsidian Help; confirm the live documentation because plan details can change.
Older attachment versions 2 weeks 2 weeks The documentation states a shorter two-week retention for older attachments.

These are product-documentation retention periods, not a promise that every historical state will be recoverable in every conflict. An attachment deleted or replaced outside the two-week window may no longer be available through Sync history even when an older note version remains.

Restore an earlier note or deleted file

  1. Enable the Sync core plugin if it is not already enabled.
  2. Open the version-history view described in Obsidian’s Sync documentation.
  3. Select the note or deleted file and the historical version you need.
  4. Restore it to the vault, then check links, frontmatter, images, and other files that depend on it.

Keep the independent folder copy until the restored result has been verified. History can recover a past state, but it does not replace a backup that you control outside Sync.

Restore Sync settings with settings history

Sync can also retain configuration history. The documented path is Settings → Core plugins → Sync → Vault configuration sync. Use the restore action for the required settings version, then reload or restart Obsidian so the restored configuration takes effect. A restart is part of applying the setting; seeing the old behavior immediately after pressing restore does not necessarily mean the restore failed.

Live Preview Markdown is rendered as you write, so headings, emphasis, links, and other formatting appear closer to their final presentation. You want to see formatted results without leaving the editor and your plugins and theme behave correctly with the newer editor. Some plugins and themes may not yet be fully compatible with the newer editor.
Source mode You edit the underlying Markdown more directly, with syntax visible. You prefer explicit markup, troubleshoot a rendering issue, or rely on an extension that works better with the older editing presentation. You see more Markdown syntax while writing and may need to preview the rendered result separately.

Set your default editing mode

  1. Open Obsidian’s Settings.
  2. Find the editor setting for the default editing mode.
  3. Select Live Preview or Source mode.
  4. Open representative notes containing the plugins, callouts, tables, embeds, and theme features you use most.
  5. If something renders incorrectly or an extension stops responding, switch modes and test again before changing several other settings.

The Live preview update documentation explains the two modes and the compatibility caution. It does not report a launch-time, typing-latency, or vault-speed advantage for either mode, so choose based on presentation and reliability rather than a claimed percentage improvement.

What the available evidence says about making a vault faster

No independently published performance statistic in the supplied material demonstrates that a particular current Obsidian setting makes a vault open faster, indexes more quickly, or reduces typing latency. The documented settings above improve privacy, recoverability, or editing fit; they should not be advertised as measured speed fixes.

That evidence limit is useful because it prevents risky guesswork. The current material does not verify a specific list of indexing controls, Restricted mode behavior, community-plugin permission settings, or excluded-file labels. Do not change an undocumented toggle because an older guide claims it will accelerate a vault. If you investigate a performance problem, change one documented option at a time, keep the backup made before the experiment, and record whether the symptom changes.

A low-risk order for configuration changes

  1. Preserve a complete local copy or archive of the vault.
  2. Decide whether the remote copy needs end-to-end encryption and store the encryption password securely before relying on Sync.
  3. Confirm that the local device itself is protected by its normal account and storage security.
  4. Choose Live Preview or Source mode, then test the notes and extensions you actually use.
  5. Review Sync history and settings history so you know what can be restored and for how long.
  6. Only then investigate other performance hypotheses using current, feature-specific documentation rather than assumed settings.

Troubleshooting the common failure cases

A second device will not connect

First check whether the remote vault uses end-to-end encryption and whether the exact encryption password is available. If the password is lost, Obsidian’s documented limitation applies: additional devices cannot be connected to that remote vault. Use the backup-and-replacement route instead of repeatedly guessing passwords.

An old note is available but an attachment is not

Check the retention distinction. Notes have the plan-dependent one-month or twelve-month periods documented above, while older attachment versions are retained for two weeks. If the attachment is outside that period, look to your independent backup rather than assuming note history can restore it.

A restored setting appears unchanged

After restoring a version under Settings → Core plugins → Sync → Vault configuration sync, reload or restart Obsidian. The documentation specifies that the setting takes effect after that reload or restart.

A plugin or theme breaks after choosing Live Preview

Switch to Source mode and test the same note. Obsidian’s Live Preview guidance warns that some plugins and themes may not yet be fully compatible with the newer editor. Keep the mode that gives your actual extensions the more reliable result; neither mode has a documented general speed advantage in the available evidence.
