Obsidian’s live Community directory now lists 8,977 plugins and 885 themes. That is an enormous ecosystem, but the practical answer to “which Obsidian plugins do I need?” is usually one to four: Dataview for querying notes, Templater for repeatable documents, Calendar for date-based navigation, and QuickAdd for capture and automation. The directory count is volatile, and Obsidian’s published announcements do not establish that plugins literally doubled during 2026.
What changed in Obsidian’s plugin ecosystem
The current Community directory reports 8,977 plugins and 885 themes. Its largest visible categories include Integrations (1,313), Files (1,233), AI (1,063), Sidebar (955), Editing (946), Visualization (879), and Automation (756). Those figures describe the directory at the time of writing, not a permanent total; new submissions, removals, and moderation can change them.
Obsidian said on May 12, 2026 that more than 4,000 plugins and themes had been created since the API launched in 2020, and that plugins had passed 120 million total downloads. That announcement combines plugins and themes in the creation figure and does not provide a year-by-year series. It supports the conclusion that the ecosystem has grown rapidly, but not the precise claim that the plugin count doubled in 2026.

For users, the bigger issue is not discovering more plugins. It is avoiding a stack of overlapping tools that adds permissions, settings, maintenance, and possible breakage without removing a real bottleneck.

The four-plugin starter set
Dataview: turn notes into queryable data
Dataview treats an Obsidian vault like a database. It reads YAML frontmatter and inline fields, then lets you build tables, lists, task views, grouping, filtering, and sorting with its query language. That makes it useful for project indexes, literature lists, dashboards, and task reports.
The official listing currently shows 5.1 million downloads. Begin with regular Dataview queries. DataviewJS is substantially more powerful, but its official warning says JavaScript queries can create, rewrite, or delete files and make network calls. Use it only when you understand the script and the data it can reach.
Templater: make repeated notes consistent
Templater inserts variables and function results into notes, which is ideal for meeting notes, daily notes, project briefs, and any document with a stable structure. It can also execute JavaScript and system commands.

Calendar: give daily notes a time-based entry point
Calendar adds a sidebar calendar for navigating daily notes, creating missing daily notes, and visualizing writing volume. It suits journalers, daily planners, and anyone who thinks in dates rather than folders.
Its listing shows 3.1 million downloads. By default, each solid dot represents 250 words, with a maximum of five dots per day. You can change the threshold if your notes are much shorter or longer than that default.
QuickAdd: capture information and automate actions
QuickAdd creates notes from templates, captures text into predefined files, and chains actions with macros. It also supports forms, user scripts, URI links, launchers, packages, and optional AI integrations. The official listing shows 2.2 million downloads, supports desktop and mobile, and documents compatibility with Templater.

These roles are complementary rather than four versions of the same product. A daily-note user may need Calendar and Templater; a project manager may need Dataview and QuickAdd; someone who only wants a consistent meeting template may need Templater alone. Install a plugin after naming the exact friction it removes, not because its download total is high.
How to install a community plugin safely
Community plugins run third-party code. Obsidian’s Restricted Mode is enabled by default for that reason.
- Open Obsidian’s Settings.
- Select Community plugins.
- Turn off Restricted mode and confirm the warning.
- Choose Browse, search for the plugin by name, and open its listing.
- Review the author, compatibility information, recent update history, disclosures, and scorecard before selecting Install.
- After installation, select Enable and open the plugin’s settings to configure only the features you need.
Community plugins do not update automatically. Revisit Settings → Community plugins to check for updates and apply them manually. Obsidian’s newer directory uses automated scans, disclosures, scorecards, and continuing manual review, but those checks do not make third-party code risk-free.
A practical review checklist
- Compatibility: confirm the plugin supports your Obsidian version and the desktop or mobile platform you use.
- Maintenance: look at the last update and whether recent issues are being addressed.
- Permissions and capabilities: distinguish a plugin that only formats text from one that can run scripts, call the network, alter files, or read clipboard content.
- Data exposure: understand whether information leaves the vault or is sent to an external service.
- Overlap: check whether an existing plugin, a core Obsidian feature, or a simpler template already solves the problem.
- Recovery: keep a current vault backup before enabling a plugin with file-writing or scripting features.
When to add, replace, or remove a plugin
Add one when the friction is measurable
Add a plugin when you can describe the repeated task it removes: “I manually build the same project index,” “I lose meeting notes in an inbox,” or “I cannot find daily notes by date.” A specific pain point gives you a way to judge whether the plugin is earning its place.

Keep the loadout small
Every plugin introduces another settings panel, update cycle, compatibility dependency, and possible interaction with other plugins. Four focused tools can cover querying, templates, dates, and automation without turning the vault into an experiment.
Remove or disable unused tools
If a plugin has not solved a recurring problem, disable it from Settings → Community plugins. If disabling it fixes a conflict, leave it off while you decide whether its benefit justifies the maintenance and capability it adds. Export or preserve any templates, queries, or macros you still need before uninstalling.
The bottom line on “plugin overload”
Obsidian’s directory is now large enough to make browsing feel like work. The reliable way through it is to map your bottleneck to a role: Dataview for structured retrieval, Templater for repeatable note creation, Calendar for date-oriented daily notes, and QuickAdd for capture and automation. Start with one, add another only when a concrete workflow requires it, and treat scripting and file access as capabilities to review rather than features to enable casually.
