A dated Obsidian note can turn a vault from somewhere you only search when needed into a place to begin the day. I stopped expecting mine to be a perfect filing system and started opening one small Daily Note each morning. It gives me a place to capture what matters today, then links that work to the rest of my notes when useful.
Why I changed how I use Obsidian
I used to treat Obsidian as storage: write a note, file it, and hope I could find it later. That made the vault useful in theory but easy to ignore in the morning. The change was to give it a recurring job: help me get oriented before the day gets busy.
This is a personal workflow, not a productivity formula. Obsidian’s own guidance says note-taking is personal and there is no single all-encompassing solution. A morning note only helps if it fits the way you actually work.
Make one Daily Note the starting point
Obsidian’s core Daily Notes plugin creates a note named for the date by default, and it can use a template to prefill a little structure. See Obsidian’s Daily Notes documentation. I use that note as an entry point, not a form I have to complete before I can start the day.

## LaterThe headings are optional. If a short note is all you will reliably open, keep it short. You can add a task, appointment, quick thought, or link only when it serves a real need.
Set up the note without building a complicated system
- Enable Daily Notes: Open Settings → Core plugins and enable Daily notes.
- Choose a note location: In Settings → Daily notes, set the folder for daily notes if you do not want them in the vault’s root.
- Choose a date format: Set the date format used for the note title. Keep the default if it is easy to recognize and search.
- Optionally select a template: Enable the core Templates plugin, set its template folder in Settings → Templates, then select a template in the Daily Notes settings. The template is inserted when the daily note is created.
- Open today’s note: Use the Daily Notes button or command from the Command palette. The first time you open it for a date, Obsidian creates the dated note; later openings take you back to that note.
Obsidian’s core plugin documentation lists built-in tools including Daily Notes, Templates, Search, Backlinks, Bases, and Workspaces. Start with the daily note and add another feature only when you can name the friction it solves.

Give the morning note a useful shape
My note is a small landing page for today rather than a complete record of my life. The same format can be a journal, task hub, capture space, meeting log, or work log; there is no need to make it do all of those jobs at once.
- Today: Write the next important action or a short list of priorities.
- Capture: Drop in a thought or detail you do not want to lose. Organize it later if it proves worth keeping.
- Appointments or tasks: Add only what you want visible while planning the day.
- End-of-day note: If reflection helps you, record what changed or what should carry forward. Skip it if it becomes an obligation.
These are options, not a checklist to fill out. A recent Obsidian community discussion about what people write down each day includes different uses and different levels of detail. Those replies are individual examples, not evidence that one format works for everyone.

Connect the daily note to the rest of the vault
The daily note becomes more useful when it points to existing material instead of trying to duplicate it. If a task belongs to a project note, link the project. If a meeting produces a durable reference, link or create that reference and keep the daily note as the trail back to it.
Obsidian’s Backlinks can show notes that refer to the current note, and Search can help locate material without a prescribed filing scheme. Bases is another built-in option for viewing notes as structured collections. None is required for the morning routine; a dated note with a few links is enough to begin.

Keep the habit lightweight enough to return to
A template should reduce decisions, not create a daily assignment. If you find yourself skipping a section, remove it. If opening the note still feels like maintenance, shrink it to a date heading and one line. The point is to make the next useful action easier to see, not to produce a polished daily record.
That is also why I did not start by installing a stack of community plugins. Obsidian describes plugins as optional rather than a silver bullet. A core-feature setup is easier to understand, and it leaves room to add a plugin later if a specific limitation becomes clear.

Decide whether syncing belongs in your routine
Sync is not necessary to use a morning note on one device. Obsidian says in its Sync documentation that “Sync is only a utility to facilitate working on multiple devices, the data will always primarily live on your hard disk.” If you want to open the same vault on several devices, choose a sync method that supports your devices and comfort with setup.
Obsidian documents multiple ways to sync, with different compatibility and setup trade-offs. Its guidance warns against using multiple sync services on the same vault because conflicts can risk data corruption. Sync is a separate decision from whether a dated note helps you start the morning.
