If Chrome appears black in OBS Window Capture, first confirm the source targets the open Chrome window, then—on Windows—try another Capture Method, including BitBlt. If the selected method is GDI, temporarily turn off Chrome hardware acceleration, restart Chrome, and check the preview again. That acceleration change has fixed at least one reported setup, but it is not a guaranteed solution.
Start with the capture source for your operating system
OBS capture sources differ by platform, so check which system you are using before changing settings. OBS documents Window Capture for Windows, marks it deprecated on macOS 13 and later in favor of macOS Screen Capture, and provides separate XComposite and PipeWire window-capture sources for Linux. See the OBS Window Capture documentation for platform-specific source details.
Fix a black Chrome capture on Windows
Confirm the selected window and change Capture Method
- In OBS, select the existing Window Capture source and open its Properties.
- Check that the selected window is the open Chrome window. If Chrome is missing from the list, open it and check again.
- Change Capture Method to another available option and compare the OBS preview. Try BitBlt if it is available. OBS describes BitBlt as less efficient, but says it may help with certain programs.
Changing the capture method is a useful first test because it can preserve window-only capture without changing Chrome’s rendering settings.
Test Chrome hardware acceleration if the method is GDI
A reported OBS Studio issue describes Chrome appearing black with GDI capture while hardware acceleration was enabled; the reporter said disabling acceleration allowed capture in that setup. This is a case report, not an OBS guarantee that acceleration is the cause in every black-window problem. See OBS Studio issue #11969.
#1 Best Overall

- In Chrome settings, search for the hardware acceleration setting and temporarily turn it off.
- Fully quit and restart Chrome so the change takes effect.
- Check the OBS preview again. If it remains black, restore the setting; disabling acceleration can affect browser rendering or performance.
Use a broader capture source if window capture still fails
Windows: try Display Capture
Display Capture records the display rather than isolating Chrome. It can provide a visible fallback, but may also capture unrelated windows, notifications, or other on-screen content. Move or close anything you do not want in the recording, then inspect the scene before recording.
macOS: use macOS Screen Capture on macOS 13 or newer
OBS marks Window Capture deprecated on macOS 13 and later and recommends macOS Screen Capture instead. Display Capture is another option when capturing the whole display is acceptable; OBS recommends Display Capture for smoother capture on macOS. Platform guidance is in the OBS source reference.

Check GPU assignment on a Windows laptop only if needed
If your laptop has integrated and discrete graphics and capture behavior suggests a GPU mismatch, update OBS and Windows and review which GPU is assigned to OBS. OBS’s laptop guide recommends leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU, but its guidance concerns display capture; it is not a standard or guaranteed fix for Chrome Window Capture. The guide also gives version-specific requirements for the newer display-capture method: Windows 10 version 1903 or higher and OBS 27 or higher. See OBS Laptop Troubleshooting.

- 【Wide Compatibility USB Capture Card】 Easily streams to Facebook, Youtube or Twitch. - 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Verify the result before recording
After changing a capture method, browser setting, or source, make a short local recording and inspect the saved video. A preview that looks correct is not a substitute for checking the recorded output before relying on the scene live.
What to expect from system requirements
Meeting OBS’s listed system requirements does not guarantee that a particular machine can record or stream successfully. The requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. These are general OBS requirements, not a specific fix for black Chrome capture. See OBS System Requirements.
