Choose Switch 2 for portability; choose PS5 or Xbox Series X for sharper graphics and a 60-FPS option. The Switch 2 conversion preserves the remaster’s major Unreal Engine 5 lighting and effects, but runs at a 30-FPS cap with lower internal resolution, simpler shadows, less foliage and reduced world detail. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S offer selectable performance and quality modes, including a 60-FPS target, yet testing has found drops, uneven frame pacing, hitches and crashes on every console version.
The practical question is therefore not whether one version is universally “better.” It is whether handheld play is worth trading image quality and frame-rate flexibility for.
At a glance
| Platform | Display and frame-rate targets | Visual profile | Main advantage | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 900p at 30 FPS handheld; 1080p at 30 FPS docked, according to Bethesda | UE5 lighting and headline effects remain, while shadows, foliage, world detail and internal resolution are reduced | Play the complete remaster handheld or on a TV | No 60-FPS mode; softer image and traversal hitches |
| PlayStation 5 | Performance mode targets 60 FPS; quality mode targets 30 FPS | Higher-fidelity assets and settings than Switch 2 | Strongest PlayStation balance of responsiveness and image quality | Sub-60 drops, uneven frame pacing, hitches and crashes have been documented |
| Xbox Series X | Performance mode targets 60 FPS; quality mode targets 30 FPS | Xbox Wire advertises 4K resolution, new textures, lighting effects and landscape improvements | 60-FPS option and Xbox ecosystem features | Performance is not perfectly locked; long-session problems remain possible |
| Xbox Series S | Part of the Xbox Series X|S performance/quality offering, but with fewer graphics settings | Lower-fidelity variant than Series X; exact comparative resolution is not stated in the cited material | Access to the remaster on the smaller Xbox console | Fewer graphics controls and less visual headroom |
These are targets and advertised modes, not guarantees of a perfectly stable frame rate. Digital Foundry’s May 10, 2025 retest reported hitches, sub-60-FPS drops, crashes and uneven frame pacing on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S. Digital Foundry’s Switch 2 analysis likewise found obvious open-world hitches despite the console’s 30-FPS cap.
What is the same on every version?
Oblivion Remastered is the same complete role-playing game across these consoles. Bethesda’s Switch 2 announcement describes the release as including the complete story experience, with updated visuals and refined gameplay. Quests, world content and the remaster’s broad feature set are not split into a smaller handheld edition.

The differences are primarily technical: resolution, rendering detail, frame-rate modes, display flexibility and platform controls. A save played on a television is not a separate “lite” campaign on Switch 2; the trade-off is how the game is rendered and where you can play it.
Frame rate: Switch 2’s fixed 30 versus 60-FPS console modes
Switch 2 is built around a 30-FPS cap
Bethesda specifies 30 FPS at 900p in handheld mode and 30 FPS at 1080p when docked. The cap gives the port a clear performance target and allows its portable hardware to retain the remaster’s UE5 lighting and other major effects, but it removes the option to trade visual settings for a higher refresh rate.
A 30-FPS presentation can feel comfortable when frame delivery is regular. It is less responsive than 60 FPS for camera movement, aiming and menu navigation, and the difference is especially easy to notice when switching between this version and a performance mode on PS5 or Xbox Series X.
PS5 and Xbox Series X offer a 60-FPS target
On PS5 and Xbox Series X, the usual choice is between a performance mode that targets 60 FPS and a quality mode that targets 30 FPS while raising visual settings. Xbox Wire lists 4K resolution and 60-frames-per-second performance among the remaster’s Xbox features, along with new textures, lighting effects, landscape improvements, animation updates and dynamic weather.
“60 FPS” should be read as the purpose of the performance mode, not as a promise that every scene remains at 60. Digital Foundry’s retest found sub-60 drops and uneven frame pacing on the current-generation consoles. The higher ceiling still matters: when the mode is near its target, movement and combat respond more quickly than on the Switch 2 cap.
Series S has fewer controls
Bethesda notes that some graphics settings are unavailable on Xbox Series S. The smaller console therefore does not expose the same level of mode or setting control as the other systems. If you want the broadest choice between image quality and responsiveness in the Xbox family, Series X is the more capable option; Series S is the access point with reduced visual headroom.

Resolution and image quality
What Switch 2 renders
The headline output numbers are 900p handheld and 1080p docked, but output resolution is not the same as the internal resolution used to draw the scene. Digital Foundry measurements reported by Notebookcheck found the docked image reconstructed to 1080p from a 960×540 native render. That is a substantial reconstruction step, so fine geometry can look softer than a native 1080p image.
Handheld mode uses a lower reconstruction target than docked mode. On the smaller built-in screen, this can make distant architecture, thin branches, grass and other fine foliage less distinct. On a large television, the softer reconstruction is easier to see because the image is being enlarged over a wider viewing area.
Which details are cut?
Digital Foundry describes the UE5-enhanced presentation as surprisingly intact overall, but identifies reductions in shadow quality and world detail. Vegetation density and the amount of environmental detail are also lower than on the more powerful consoles. The result is not a completely different art style: lighting, atmosphere and the remaster’s main visual identity survive, while the scene contains fewer small details and less precise shadowing.
That distinction explains why screenshots can look closer than motion does. A still image may preserve the same sky, lighting and broad landscape, while movement reveals softer foliage, shorter or simpler shadows and less detail in the distance.
PS5 and Xbox Series X have more visual headroom
The higher-end consoles use more detailed assets and settings in their quality-oriented modes. Xbox Wire specifically advertises 4K resolution, but the cited material does not establish that every mode renders natively at 4K in every scene. Treat the figure as the platform’s advertised output feature, and expect the performance mode to reduce some image-quality settings in exchange for its higher frame-rate target.

Neither option eliminates the game’s traversal and frame-pacing issues.

Hitches, traversal stutter and long-session behavior
What a traversal hitch feels like
A traversal hitch is a brief pause or judder while the game streams new parts of its open world. It is different from a consistently low frame rate: most movement may look smooth, followed by a sudden interruption as the camera crosses a boundary or the game loads new detail.
Digital Foundry measurements reported by Notebookcheck recorded Switch 2 traversal stutters of approximately 230 milliseconds. That is long enough to be visible and to interrupt the rhythm of riding, running or turning through the world, even though the stated frame-rate target remains 30 FPS.
No console version is completely clean
Digital Foundry’s May 10, 2025 retest covered PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S and found hitches, drops below the performance target, crashes and uneven frame pacing. The Switch 2 analysis also called out obvious open-world hitches. In other words, buying the more powerful console improves the available frame-rate and image-quality modes, but it does not guarantee a hitch-free or crash-free long session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe evidence does not establish a reliable percentage for average frame rate, crash frequency or failure rate on any platform. Avoid interpreting one difficult area, one video clip or one short play session as a complete reliability ranking.
Handheld, docked and television use
Why Switch 2 is different
Switch 2 is the only choice here that supports the full remaster in a handheld format. You can continue the same adventure away from a television, then dock the system for a larger display. Bethesda’s specified targets change with that use: 900p at 30 FPS handheld and 1080p at 30 FPS docked.
Portability also changes how the compromises are perceived. A softer image and reduced foliage are less conspicuous on the handheld screen than on a large 4K television. Conversely, a 30-FPS cap is more obvious if you regularly play 60-FPS games and sit close to a large display.

Why PS5 and Xbox Series X suit a fixed TV setup
PS5 and Xbox Series X are designed around television play and higher rendering performance. Their performance modes are the relevant choice for players who value responsive camera movement and combat, while quality modes are aimed at people who prefer more detailed visuals and can accept a 30-FPS target.

A compatible high-refresh display can show the benefit of a 60-FPS mode, but a television cannot make a mode stable when the game itself drops frames or delivers them unevenly. Display capability and game consistency are separate issues.

Buy the Switch 2 version when portability is the priority
- You want the complete remaster in handheld form.
- You accept a 30-FPS cap rather than needing 60 FPS.
- You are comfortable with softer reconstruction, reduced foliage and simpler shadows.
- You can tolerate occasional open-world traversal hitches.
This is a meaningful portable conversion rather than a content-reduced edition. Its value comes from access and flexibility: the same large RPG can be played handheld or docked. The purchase makes less sense if nearly all your play happens on a large 4K television and you are sensitive to image softness.
Buy PS5 for the strongest PlayStation option
- You want a choice between a responsive 60-FPS performance mode and a more detailed 30-FPS quality mode.
- You prefer higher-fidelity assets, foliage, shadows and world detail than the Switch 2 version provides.
- You are willing to accept that hitches, frame-time irregularities, drops and crashes have been reported.
PS5 is the sensible pick for a PlayStation household that values both visual quality and the ability to select a higher frame-rate target. It is not a promise of flawless performance.
Buy Xbox Series X for 60-FPS access in the Xbox ecosystem
- You already use Xbox features and want the remaster there.
- You want the advertised 4K presentation and a 60-FPS performance option.
- You want more graphical headroom than Series S provides.
Series X offers the most flexible Xbox presentation. As on PS5, the 60-FPS mode can drop below target and the game can hitch or show uneven frame pacing, so choose it for the option and higher ceiling rather than a guaranteed lock.
Choose Series S only when its constraints fit
Series S gives Xbox players access to the game but has fewer graphics options, and the cited material does not provide a direct resolution comparison with Series X. It is appropriate when console size, existing ownership or the Xbox ecosystem outweighs the desire for maximum visual control. If you are buying specifically for the clearest image and widest settings range, Series X is the safer Xbox choice.

How much worse do the Switch 2 graphics look?
The answer depends on the screen and what you notice first. The broad scene composition and UE5 lighting remain recognizable, so the port does not look like a stripped-down last-generation edition. The visible losses are concentrated in rendering precision: the docked image is reconstructed from 960×540 internally, handheld uses a lower reconstruction target than docked, and shadows, foliage and world detail are reduced.
On the handheld display, those compromises can be acceptable because the screen is smaller and portability is the feature that other consoles cannot provide. On a large television, distant detail and vegetation appear softer, and the lower-density world is easier to compare directly with PS5 or Series X quality modes. The difference is therefore substantial for pixel-level image quality, but less damaging if your priority is playing the same RPG away from the TV.
A simple decision framework
| Your priority | Best fit | Why | What to accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play in bed, while traveling or away from the TV | Switch 2 | Only version with a full handheld mode | 30 FPS, softer reconstruction and reduced detail |
| Most responsive combat and camera movement | PS5 or Xbox Series X performance mode | Both provide a 60-FPS target | Sub-60 drops and uneven pacing can occur |
| Highest visual detail on a television | PS5 or Xbox Series X quality mode | More rendering headroom, foliage, shadows and world detail | 30-FPS target and possible hitches |
| Xbox access at the lowest hardware tier | Series S | Runs the Xbox version on the smaller console | Fewer graphics controls and lower visual headroom |
| One console for both handheld and docked play | Switch 2 | 900p handheld and 1080p docked targets | There is no 60-FPS mode |
What to expect before you buy
- Decide where you will play most. If handheld use is occasional but your main screen is a large television, compare the Switch 2 image in docked mode rather than assuming the portable screen will hide every compromise.
- Choose your frame-rate tolerance. Switch 2 is a 30-FPS-only purchase. PS5 and Series X let you try a 60-FPS target, but the available testing shows that target can be missed.
- Separate image quality from stability. The more powerful consoles provide higher-fidelity modes; they do not remove all hitches, frame-pacing problems or crashes.
- Match the Xbox model to your expectations. Series S has fewer graphics settings. Series X is the Xbox model for buyers who want the broadest presentation options.
- Value portability honestly. If being able to continue the complete remaster away from a television changes when and where you play, the Switch 2 trade-off may be worthwhile. If portability does not matter, the higher-end consoles offer the stronger technical presentation.
Bottom line by question
Is Oblivion Remastered better on Switch 2 or PS5?
PS5 is better for image quality, visual settings and a 60-FPS target. Switch 2 is better only when handheld access or docked-and-portable flexibility is more important than those advantages.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Is the Switch 2 version worth buying?
Yes, if portability is central to your decision and you can accept a 30-FPS cap, softer reconstruction, reduced environmental detail and occasional traversal hitches. For a TV-first player seeking the sharpest and most responsive version, PS5 or Xbox Series X is the better fit.
