Object-oriented programming (OOP) organizes software around objects that combine related state and behavior. Classes describe the structure of objects; encapsulation controls access to their internals; inheritance and interfaces offer ways to share or describe behavior. The phrase “the art of object-oriented programming” also appears in the subtitle of a particular 1996 book, Karel++, but it is not a name for OOP as a whole.
What does object-oriented programming mean?
OOP is a way to organize a program around objects: units that bring related information and operations together. Oracle’s Java tutorial calls an object “a software bundle of related state and behavior.” That is a useful description of the Java model, not a universal rule about how every object-oriented language works.
In Java, an object’s state is represented by fields, and its behavior by methods. The basic idea is to keep data and the operations that make sense for that data connected, rather than treating every value and function as unrelated. Oracle’s introductory material explains these concepts in its Java Tutorials.

A class defines a kind of object: its structure and the behavior available to instances created from it. An object is one particular instance of that class. A class is therefore not the same thing as the objects made from it.
#1 Best Overall
For example, a BankAccount class might define a balance and operations such as depositing or withdrawing money. Two accounts can be created from that class, but each object has its own balance. The class describes the kind of thing; each instance holds its own current state.
What does encapsulation accomplish?
Encapsulation controls how other code accesses an object’s internal data. Instead of allowing callers to change internal values arbitrarily, a type can expose methods that define permitted operations. In the account example, a withdrawal method can check that the requested amount is valid before changing the balance.
Rank #2
The details vary by language: OOP languages do not all enforce encapsulation in the same way. The design goal is to offer a clear, usable surface while keeping implementation details under the object’s control. This can make it easier to change internal code without requiring every caller to change with it.
When are inheritance and interfaces useful?
Inheritance shares or specializes behavior
Inheritance lets one class build on another. In Java, a subclass can inherit commonly used state and behavior from a superclass, then add or specialize behavior. Java permits a class to have one direct superclass; other languages may have different rules.
Inheritance creates a hierarchy, so it is most useful when the relationship between the types is meaningful and the shared behavior belongs in the parent. If the only reason for a hierarchy is to avoid repeating a small amount of code, the added dependency between classes may not be worth it.
Interfaces describe a capability
In Java, an interface describes a behavior contract that a class promises to provide. Code can depend on that expected capability rather than on one specific implementation. For instance, a caller might rely on a type that can be saved, without needing to know which class performs the saving.
Rank #4
An interface and an inheritance hierarchy solve different problems: an interface expresses what behavior callers can expect, while inheritance can provide a shared base of state or behavior. Whether and how these ideas apply depends on the language.
Where do packages fit?
In Java, a package is a namespace for organizing related classes and interfaces. Packages help structure a Java program, but they are a Java mechanism, not an OOP feature shared by every language.

How should a beginner start designing objects?
Use a small, concrete problem and make design choices in sequence. This is a practical learning approach, not a universal method prescribed for every project.
- Identify a domain concept. Pick a thing or role in the problem, such as an account, a book, or a sensor.
- Decide what state belongs together. List the information that describes one instance, rather than treating all program data as belonging to one global object.
- Define behavior that operates on that state. Choose the operations that the object should support and keep their effects understandable.
- Expose a small interface. Let callers use the necessary behavior without depending on private implementation details.
- Add abstractions only when justified. Consider inheritance when types share a meaningful base relationship, or an interface when callers need a common behavior contract.
Which resource fits your learning goal?
These options serve different purposes: one is a novice-oriented course text, one is a Java concept tutorial, and one is a design reference. Choose based on language and whether you need programming foundations or design guidance.

| Karel++: A Gentle Introduction to the Art of Object-Oriented Programming | Wiley describes it as intended for novice programmers and introductory or second computer science courses using C++. Its robot-world setup uses an analog equivalent of C++. | Paperback course text by Joseph Bergin, Mark Stehlik, Jim Roberts, and Richard E. Pattis; ISBN 9780471138099; published October 1996. See Wiley’s listing. Current price and stock are not established here. |
| Oracle Java Tutorials | Java-specific explanations of objects, classes, and related concepts; a fit if you are learning Java. | Online tutorial. Oracle says the material was written for JDK 8 and may not include later improvements or may use technology no longer available. Check newer Java documentation for version-sensitive details: Oracle’s Java Concepts tutorial. |
| Designing Object-Oriented Software | Design principles and process rather than a beginner syntax course; topics include responsibilities, collaborations, hierarchies, subsystems, and protocols. | Design reference by Rebecca Wirfs-Brock, Brian Wilkerson, and Lauren Wiener. What does “the art of object-oriented programming” refer to?
The phrase appears in the subtitle of Wiley’s Karel++: A Gentle Introduction to the Art of Object-Oriented Programming. The book is an introductory text built around a robot world and an analog equivalent of C++; it is one specific learning resource, not the sole meaning of the broader phrase “object-oriented programming.”
