Choose Connections if you like sorting words into categories, spotting decoys and making a deduction under a mistake limit. Choose Strands if you prefer searching a visual letter grid, following a theme and uncovering a defining spangram. Both daily puzzles are free; a New York Times Games subscription mainly matters for archives, synchronized history, statistics and other subscriber tools.
Connections and Strands in one sentence
Connections presents a bank of 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. The challenge is not simply recognizing a relationship; it is deciding which relationship the puzzle setter intended when several words appear to fit. You submit a group, learn whether it is correct, and use the result to narrow the remaining possibilities. You can make only three mistakes before the puzzle ends.
Strands presents a 6×8 letter grid. You trace words through adjacent letters, changing direction as needed, while a daily theme guides your search. Every letter in the 48-cell board is used. One special answer, the spangram, runs between opposite edges of the grid and expresses the puzzle’s theme.

Neither game has a published, head-to-head difficulty or completion-time statistic. Calling one objectively harder would overstate what the available evidence shows. Your preference usually depends on whether ambiguity or spatial searching feels more satisfying.
How Connections works
The board and objective
Connections starts with 16 words. The objective is to identify four categories containing four words each. Categories can be concrete, such as types of weather, or based on a word relationship, spelling pattern, cultural reference or phrase completion. The words are deliberately chosen to create overlap: a word may appear to belong with more than one possible group until the rest of the board supplies enough evidence.
After selecting four words, submit them as a group. A correct group disappears and its category is revealed. An incorrect group counts as a mistake. The daily puzzle is lost after four mistakes, while the game’s statistics treat a win as completing the puzzle in fewer than four mistakes.

A practical solving loop
- Scan all 16 words before committing. Mark obvious relationships mentally, but do not submit the first plausible set. A conspicuous trio may be a deliberate red herring.
- Look for a fourth member. A category is stronger when four words share one precise rule than when three share a broad association.
- Test exclusivity. Ask whether each candidate word fits another likely category more naturally. If moving one word creates a cleaner group elsewhere, hold your submission.
- Submit the most defensible group. The result gives information even when the group is wrong: the mistake consumes one attempt but eliminates that exact combination.
- Rebuild the remaining board. Once a group is removed, words that seemed ambiguous often become clear. Repeat until all four categories are solved or your mistake limit is reached.
What makes Connections feel difficult
The central difficulty is semantic ambiguity. The game can place words that share a surface connection while belonging to different intended categories. A word associated with an animal, for example, might instead be a brand name, a verb, a nickname or part of a title. The puzzle rewards precise interpretation and elimination rather than rapid recognition alone.
Because mistakes are limited, Connections creates pressure that is absent from a normal word-sort exercise. A careful player may spend more time proving that a group is exclusive than searching for a new association. That pressure is also what makes a successful solve feel compact and deductive.
Sharing, statistics and account behavior
The official help information says Connections supports sharing, statistics and badges. Signing in lets you preserve progress across devices. Without an account, progress is stored locally and may be lost when you change devices.
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. A subscriber archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 for All Access and Games subscribers. Solving archived puzzles affects completion and win-rate statistics, but it does not change daily streaks.
How Strands works
The 6×8 letter grid
Strands uses a 6×8 grid, for 48 letters in total. Theme answers are formed by tracing through adjacent letters. Paths may turn, so a word is not restricted to a straight line or a conventional word-search direction. The board is designed so that all 48 letters participate in the finished puzzle.

The theme is your main guide. Instead of sorting a visible list of words, you infer what kinds of words the puzzle is hiding and then search the grid for paths that match that idea.
The spangram
Every Strands puzzle contains a special answer called the spangram. It expresses the puzzle’s theme and spans opposite edges of the board. Finding it can reveal the intended vocabulary and make the remaining paths easier to see. It is also the term to search for when you need a hint specific to Strands.
A practical solving loop
- Read the theme clue carefully. Treat it as a constraint on the kinds of words you should seek, not as a complete answer.
- Inspect clusters and unusual letter runs. Look for adjacent sequences that could form a theme word, including paths that bend or snake around other letters.
- Trace a candidate with your finger or pointer. Confirm that each successive letter is adjacent and that the path does not reuse a cell improperly.
- Use confirmed answers to map the board. Solved paths show how the remaining letters are arranged and can expose the spangram’s route.
- Search for the spangram when the theme remains vague. Its definition normally names or describes the common subject that links the other answers.
- Finish every themed word. Since all 48 letters are used, unclaimed cells are evidence that an answer or part of the path is still missing.
What makes Strands feel difficult
Strands combines two kinds of uncertainty: you may not know the theme vocabulary, and you may not see the correct path even when you know a likely word. A hidden answer can run through an unexpected bend, while a familiar word may be impossible because its letters are not adjacent in the required order.

The comparison describes documented mechanics and access features, not a laboratory ranking of difficulty. A player who is quick at visual scanning may finish Strands faster, while a player who is comfortable with wordplay may finish Connections faster.
Which puzzle is better for your solving style?
Choose Connections if you enjoy deduction and controlled risk
- You like deciding whether a relationship is exact enough to count as a category.
- You enjoy eliminating alternatives and treating each submission as evidence.
- You prefer a compact board that can be scanned at once.
- You want a result that clearly records mistakes, wins and streak-related progress.
- You find misleading overlaps entertaining rather than unfair.
Connections is especially suitable for a short break when you want a defined reasoning task. The board is visible immediately, and every correct group reduces the problem’s size.
Choose Strands if you enjoy visual exploration
- You like tracing paths and rotating your attention around a board.
- You prefer a theme to guide discovery rather than a list of explicit candidates.
- You enjoy finding a central answer that explains the rest of the puzzle.
- You are comfortable spending time on a word that may be hidden in an unexpected route.
- You want a word-search experience with more conceptual direction than a generic grid.
Strands is a better fit when the act of searching is part of the fun. It can feel less like proving a set and more like mapping a small word maze.

The games complement each other. Connections asks, “Which four items belong together?” Strands asks, “Where can this themed word travel through the grid?” Playing both gives you a semantic deduction exercise and a spatial vocabulary search without requiring the same mental approach twice.

Are Strands and Connections free?
Yes. The daily versions of both games are available without a qualifying Games subscription. Connections is described as free on all platforms, while the daily Strands puzzle is free on the New York Times site.
A subscription becomes relevant when you want more than the current daily board. The official Games subscription listing places both games in the Games catalog and describes access to the broader catalog, archives and subscriber tools.
What a subscription changes for Connections
- Access to the archive, including puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023 for All Access and Games subscribers.
- Subscriber tools such as Connections Bot.
- Cross-device history when you are signed in.
- Ongoing statistics and badges connected to your account.
Archived solving contributes to completion and win-rate statistics but does not alter your daily streak. That distinction matters if you are deciding whether an archive session will affect the record you care about.

What a subscription changes for Strands
- Access to the official back catalog, according to the cited Strands rules guide.
- Games-wide subscriber features listed with the New York Times Games package.
- A single Games account and app environment for tracking activity across supported games.
The subscription is therefore optional for trying either puzzle and more useful for regular players who want historical boards, saved progress and companion features.
Statistics, streaks and social play
Account and progress
Signing in preserves progress across devices. If you play without an account, progress remains local to the device and can disappear when you switch devices. This is the practical reason to create an account even when you only play the free daily puzzles.
Friends and leaderboards
The Games app provides statistics and streak views for both Connections and Strands. Its Friends tab supports a Connections leaderboard for up to 100 friends and shows daily match counts. The help information says there are currently no global leaderboards.
Connections also has a documented sharing flow, allowing you to post a result without revealing the board’s answers. Sharing is useful for comparing completion outcomes while preserving the puzzle for people who have not played yet.

Published help information explains how wins and mistakes are counted, but it does not provide a comparative average completion time or a Strands-versus-Connections difficulty score. Your personal statistics are useful for tracking improvement; they are not evidence that one game is objectively harder for everyone.

Connections 3×3
Connections 3×3 uses three groups of three rather than the standard four groups of four. The smaller structure changes the scale of the deduction while preserving the category-grouping idea. It is a natural option for players who want a shorter variant or a different amount of ambiguity.
Colorful Strands
Colorful Strands keeps Strands’ rules while changing the board treatment. The underlying activity remains tracing themed words and finding the spangram, but the visual presentation is varied.
These bonus puzzles are described as subscriber features rolling out in the Games app and on the web. Availability can depend on the rollout state of your account and platform.
Which is better for a quick daily brain break?
For the shortest, most predictable session, start with Connections: all 16 candidates are visible, and each correct category permanently reduces the board. The mistake limit also gives the session a clear endpoint.
Choose Strands for a quick break when you prefer a more exploratory rhythm. You can begin immediately from the theme and let one discovered path guide the next. The session may feel less predictable because finding a hidden route can take longer than recognizing a category.
If “quick” means a consistent routine, Connections is the safer first choice. If it means a brief change of mental scenery, Strands may be more satisfying.
Common questions before you choose
Is Strands harder than Connections?
There is no published direct comparison that establishes one as harder or gives a reliable average completion-time difference. Connections concentrates difficulty in category ambiguity and limited mistakes; Strands concentrates it in theme inference and spatial path finding. The harder game is usually the one that matches your weaker skill.

How is Strands different from Connections?
Connections gives you a list of words to sort into four categories. Strands gives you a letter grid in which you trace themed words and locate a spangram. Connections is primarily semantic deduction; Strands is primarily spatial search guided by a theme.

Both are free daily, so the simplest decision is to try each for a week and notice which kind of uncertainty you look forward to solving.
