NYT Strands is listed by the New York Times Help Center as a free daily game. You can play it in a web browser or in the NYT Games app for iOS and Android. A New York Times account is the key to keeping puzzle progress, statistics, and streaks available when you switch devices or move between the browser and app. The app’s Me tab contains Strands statistics and streak information. For sharing, use the game’s current Share control and inspect the preview before posting because the exact interface and output can change.
What is NYT Strands?
Strands is the New York Times’ daily word puzzle built around a theme. The game presents a letter grid rather than a conventional crossword. You trace connected letters to find words associated with the day’s theme, including a longer word called the spangram in independent explanations of the game.
The New York Times Help Center treats Strands as one of its free daily games. That describes access to the daily puzzle, not every Games product. Archives, subscription-only games, extra features, and other entitlements can follow different rules, so check the current Games subscription information if you need more than the day’s Strands puzzle.

According to the New York Times Games subscription help information, the daily Strands game is available without a Games subscription. You can reach it through a browser or the NYT Games app. The same guidance says Games subscribers receive access to all games and puzzles.

“Free daily game” should not be read as a promise that every related feature is free forever. Subscription benefits, archive access, and product policies can change. If the game presents an account or subscription prompt, read what the prompt applies to: it may concern an archive, another game, or a broader Games entitlement rather than the current daily Strands puzzle.
How to play NYT Strands in a browser
A browser is the simplest route if you do not want to install an app. Use a current browser on a phone, tablet, or computer and open the New York Times Games area, then select Strands. The puzzle loads in the page itself.
- Open the New York Times Games site. Use the Games navigation or the Strands entry shown on the current site.
- Choose the day’s Strands puzzle. The daily puzzle is the primary free offering described by the Help Center.
- Sign in before you begin if you want cross-device continuity. A New York Times account links saved progress, statistics, and streaks to your account.
- Play in the grid. Trace a connected sequence of letters to submit a word, following the rules shown by the live puzzle.
- Finish or leave the puzzle. If you are signed in, return later on another supported device and look for the same saved state.
When you are logged out, the official account guidance says progress is stored locally on that device. Clearing browser data, changing browsers, using private browsing, or moving to another device can therefore leave the local record behind. Signing in is the practical safeguard.
How to play Strands in the NYT Games app
The official app help information lists the NYT Games app for both iOS and Android. The labels can vary slightly by operating-system version, but the documented setup pattern is to install the app, open it, and create or sign in to a New York Times account.
- Install the NYT Games app from your device’s official app store.
- Open the app and choose the account option. Create an account or sign in to an existing New York Times account.
- Open the Strands game card. The daily puzzle should be available from the Games home area.
- Allow the app to finish loading the puzzle. A stable connection helps when the app first retrieves the daily game.
- Play normally and keep the same account signed in. That account is what allows saved progress, statistics, and streaks to follow you between supported devices.
If you bought a Games subscription through Apple, the app help guidance specifies using the Apple sign-in path associated with that purchase. Do not create a second account simply because the app and browser display different sign-in buttons; first identify which New York Times account holds your Games access.

The important choice is not browser versus app; it is whether you are signed in to the same New York Times account. A browser is convenient for occasional play or a work computer. The app is convenient for a dedicated phone or tablet and provides the documented Me area for game records.

How to save Strands progress and keep it when changing devices
Use a New York Times account whenever your progress matters. The official guidance distinguishes local, logged-out storage from account-linked storage:

- Logged in: saved puzzle progress, statistics, and streaks are available after changing devices and support play across multiple devices and web browsers.
The New York Times’ own wording is direct: “To play across multiple devices and web browsers, log in to your New York Times account.” That is the clearest answer for anyone worried about losing a puzzle in progress.
Moving from a browser to the app
- On the browser where your progress exists, confirm which New York Times account is signed in.
- Open the NYT Games app on the new device.
- Sign in with that same account, using the matching Apple sign-in route if your subscription was purchased through Apple.
- Open Strands and check whether the current puzzle reflects your saved state.
If the puzzle appears unsolved, stop before starting over. A different account, an expired session, or local-only progress in the original browser is more likely than the puzzle being deleted. Sign out and back in with the account you used originally, then check the original browser without clearing its data.
Moving between two browsers or computers
Use the same account in each browser. If one computer shows progress and another does not, compare the signed-in email or account identity first. Private browsing windows and cleared cookies can behave like a logged-out session, so they are poor places to rely on an unsynced record.
Where to find Strands statistics and streaks
In the NYT Games app, open the Me tab. The official app help page says this area contains game statistics and streaks. Select the Strands game card to expand its statistics.

- Find the Strands game card.
- Select the card to expand its statistics and streak information.
If you do not see the expected record, verify that the app is signed in to the account used for earlier games. A locally stored, logged-out browser history will not automatically become an account history merely because you later install the app.

How the Strands puzzle works
Independent guides describe Strands as a 6-by-8 letter grid. In that explanation, letters connect along adjacent paths that can turn, and the objective is to identify words that fit the day’s theme. The guide also describes a spangram, a theme-defining word that stretches across the board.
Those grid dimensions and mechanics come from secondary explanations rather than an accessible official New York Times rules page. Treat the instructions displayed in the live puzzle as authoritative if they differ. The interface may clarify how a path can move, how a word is submitted, or how the spangram is identified.
Theme words and non-theme words
The independent explanation says that words matching the theme are the main discoveries and that valid non-theme words can contribute toward earning hints. Because this detail is not confirmed here by an official rules page, use it as a useful description of the commonly reported mechanic, not as a guarantee that every historical or future version behaves identically.

Read the day’s theme carefully, then test plausible connected words. When the game awards feedback or a hint, use the wording and visual response on that specific puzzle rather than assuming a hidden rule.
Why the board can feel difficult
- The letters must form connected paths, so a correct word may be unusable if its letters cannot be traced in sequence.
- The theme narrows the answer set but can also make ordinary words misleading.
- The long theme-defining word may cross much of the board, making it hard to see until several shorter words are found.
- Words that are valid in everyday language may not match the puzzle’s theme or accepted word list.
How to use hints without losing your place
The secondary guide’s description links non-theme word discoveries with hints. If the current puzzle offers a hint control, read its confirmation and result carefully before selecting it. A hint can reveal useful direction, but it may also change what is shown on the board and what you want to solve unaided.
For a clean record, decide before playing whether you are solving for completion, for a streak, or for a no-help challenge. The app’s statistics can record your results, but the exact categories shown are controlled by the current New York Times interface.

How to share NYT Strands results
An independent how-to page reports that Strands includes a share control that produces an emoji-style result pattern. Accessible official documentation did not confirm the current button label, placement, exact output, or every piece of information revealed. Use the live game’s own preview as the source of truth.
- Finish the puzzle. Look for a Share option on the completion screen or in the game’s result controls.
- Open the share preview. Check the text and emoji pattern before sending it to a social network, message, email, or clipboard.
- Confirm that the preview contains what you intend to disclose. Do not assume it includes or omits a solve time, hint use, or other detail unless the preview shows it.
- Choose the destination or copy the result. The available destinations depend on your device and the current app or browser interface.
If you cannot find the control, return to the completed puzzle and look for a menu, overflow button, or result card. Interface names can change between the browser and app. Avoid posting a screenshot when you want a spoiler-free result: an image can reveal the board, theme, or answers even if the emoji pattern would not.
What can other people learn from a shared result?
The reported emoji-style format is intended to communicate a result without reproducing the full board, but the exact current information is not established by accessible official instructions. The safest practice is to inspect the preview yourself. If it exposes a score, number of hints, completion status, or another metric you would rather keep private, cancel and share a manually edited message instead.
Sharing a result is optional. You can copy only a neutral statement such as “Finished today’s Strands” when you want to discuss the puzzle without revealing performance details.

The daily puzzle will not load
- Refresh the page or fully reopen the app.
- Check that the device has a working internet connection.
- Try the other official access route: browser if the app fails, or app if the browser fails.
- Check whether the problem affects only Strands or the entire Games area.
Do not clear browser data as a first step if you are logged out and have an unfinished puzzle. The official guidance says logged-out progress is local, so clearing data can remove the only copy.
My progress disappeared after switching devices
- Sign in on the new device.
- Confirm that the account identity matches the account used on the original device.
- Reopen Strands and allow the game time to load account data.
- Return to the original browser or device without deleting local data.
If the original session was logged out, its progress may never have been linked to an account. In that case, the local device or browser is the place to look for the unfinished puzzle.

My streak or statistics look wrong
Open the app’s Me tab and expand the Strands card. If the record is different from what you expect, check the signed-in account first. Then consider whether you played on a second account, in a cleared browser session, or on a device that had not finished syncing.
The app asks me to sign in again
Sign in rather than starting a new account. If a subscription was purchased through Apple, use the Apple account path described in the app help instructions. Creating another New York Times account can split your progress and make the history appear incomplete.
Daily Strands versus broader Games access

Do not infer archive access, historical puzzles, or companion tools from the fact that the daily Strands puzzle is listed as free. Those are separate entitlements and may require a subscription.
A reliable setup for regular players
If you play most days, set up the account and device once rather than trying to recover a streak later:
- Choose either the browser or the iOS/Android app as your primary route.
- Sign in to one New York Times account before solving the first puzzle you want recorded.
- Use that same account on any additional phone, tablet, computer, or browser.
- Open the app’s Me tab periodically to confirm that Strands statistics and streaks are updating.
- After finishing, use the live Share control only after reviewing its preview for spoilers and personal result details.
This arrangement separates three issues that are often confused: reaching the daily puzzle, preserving your record, and publishing a result. The first can work without a subscription; the second depends on account sign-in; the third depends on the current game interface.
