Choose Wordle if you want a short, tightly bounded deduction routine: one five-letter answer, six guesses, and immediate letter feedback. Choose Connections if you prefer semantic associations, category discovery, ambiguity, and a solve that is easy to discuss with other people.
Neither game is universally harder. Wordle tests how efficiently you narrow a letter pattern; Connections asks you to find four intended relationships among 16 words while avoiding convincing false groupings. Your vocabulary, category familiarity, tolerance for ambiguity, and preferred session length matter more than a general difficulty ranking.
Wordle and Connections solve different problems
Both are daily New York Times word games, but they reward different kinds of thinking. Wordle gives you a single target and a fixed attempt limit. Connections gives you a board full of possible relationships and asks you to discover the editor’s intended structure.

| Connections | Partition 16 words into four groups of four | Four mistakes end the puzzle | Semantic grouping, flexible interpretation, and resisting false associations | Exploratory, argumentative, and reveal-driven |
The rules explain the preference split. Wordle’s board shrinks toward one answer after every guess. Connections starts with many plausible relationships and requires you to decide which relationship is intended. If you like a clear feedback loop, Wordle is the safer choice. If you enjoy noticing a theme and defending an interpretation, Connections is likely more satisfying.

How Wordle works
One answer, six attempts
The New York Times Wordle FAQ describes a daily puzzle in which you have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Each submitted guess receives color-coded feedback about the letters, allowing you to refine the next guess. The finite board makes every move consequential: an exploratory guess can reveal useful information, but it also consumes one of your six opportunities.
What the solving experience feels like
Wordle is a deduction routine rather than a search through a large field. You begin with a five-letter candidate, read the feedback, and update the possible pattern. The central question is usually, “Which guess will eliminate the most possibilities while still giving me a chance to solve?” That makes the game appealing to players who enjoy orderly progress and a predictable stopping point.
Vocabulary still matters. An unfamiliar word can remain difficult even when the letter information is good, while a familiar word may be easy once its pattern becomes visible. The game’s difficulty therefore changes with the day’s answer and with the player’s vocabulary; a general claim that Wordle is easy or hard is too broad.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Statistics, streaks, and sharing
The Wordle FAQ describes statistics and streak tracking through the New York Times account experience. Players can also share a compact guess-grid result that communicates the solve without revealing the answer, which makes Wordle naturally suited to individual routines and lightweight conversations about performance.
That sharing format also changes how people talk about the game. A result can show whether someone solved in relatively few or many guesses without requiring a long explanation of the board. The social comparison is therefore usually about efficiency, streaks, and memorable starting choices rather than an argument over what a category means.
How Connections works
Sixteen words become four categories
The New York Times describes Connections as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.” You receive 16 words and must arrange them into four groups of four. Every group has a shared connection, and the four categories are assigned colors: yellow is the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple as the trickiest.
The board is deliberately ambiguous. Words can appear to belong to more than one category, but each puzzle has exactly one intended solution. Editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. You are therefore solving two problems at once: recognizing a possible relationship and checking whether it is the relationship the puzzle is designed to reward.

Four mistakes are the failure limit
You can submit a proposed group of four words. A wrong selection counts as a mistake, and four mistakes end the puzzle. This creates a different kind of pressure from Wordle. In Wordle, every guess updates letter information about one target. In Connections, a tempting but incorrect category can consume one of only four errors and leave the remaining words harder to interpret.
Why the colors matter
The color labels communicate an intended difficulty range, not a guarantee about your personal experience. A purple category may be obvious to someone familiar with its subject but nearly invisible to another player. Conversely, a yellow group can be difficult if its words are surrounded by stronger-looking decoys. The color system is useful as an editorial signal, but the ambiguity of the board remains the defining challenge.
Because every correct group removes four words, a solution can change the meaning of the entire board. A set that seemed too broad may become precise after another category disappears, while a word that appeared central to one theory may have been included only to create overlap. This is why Connections often produces a stronger reveal than a simple right-or-wrong response.
Which game is harder?
There is no objective winner in difficulty. The games test different abilities, and the same player can find one trivial and the other exhausting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Wordle is harder when letter-level deduction is not your strength
- You lose more often when the answer uses vocabulary you do not know.
- Several plausible words can share the same partial pattern, forcing you to spend guesses discriminating among them.
- A poor information-gathering guess can leave too few attempts to test the remaining candidates.
- You may understand the pattern but still need to choose among words that differ in one or two positions.
Connections is harder when ambiguity or category switching frustrates you
- Several words may fit a broad idea, but only four belong to the intended category.
- A relationship that looks obvious can be a decoy designed to pull words away from the correct groups.
- The four-mistake limit punishes repeated testing when you have not yet identified a reliable category.
- Categories can require cultural, linguistic, or topical familiarity that is uneven across players.
- A category can be technically valid yet hard to see until the remaining words are reconsidered.
Wordle usually feels more controlled because the feedback is attached to individual letters. Connections usually feels more volatile because a single interpretation can reorganize the entire board. That difference is about uncertainty, not a universal ranking of challenge.
Is Connections better for groups and Wordle better solo?
Connections has a stronger built-in argument element. A group can debate whether four words share a theme, challenge a proposed category, and react to the reveal when a near-miss turns out to be a decoy. Its social appeal comes from explaining an association, not just reporting a score.
Wordle is especially comfortable as a solo habit. The board is small, the objective is singular, and the shared result can be discussed without spoiling the answer. Friends can compare streaks or guess patterns while preserving the puzzle itself.

These are tendencies rather than restrictions. A solo player can enjoy Connections as a private classification exercise, and a group can collaborate on Wordle by discussing candidate words. Choose based on the conversation you want: Connections invites “Why do these belong together?” while Wordle invites “How did your guesses narrow the pattern?”
The games also support different kinds of collaboration. In Connections, another person can notice a relationship you overlooked, but that suggestion may also make a wrong category seem more convincing. In Wordle, a partner can propose a high-information guess or point out a letter-position constraint. Neither style is inherently more social; they simply make different contributions useful.
Do you need a New York Times subscription?
Playing the daily puzzles
The official Connections help page says the core game is free on supported web and app platforms and does not require registration. You can sign in if you want progress retained across devices. The daily Connections puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s time zone.
Wordle is presented as a daily game with account-linked statistics and streak features. The core daily experience is separate from those account benefits, so a paid subscription is not the reason to play the puzzle itself. Availability can vary by platform and region, and the current subscription terms should be checked on the New York Times site before purchase.
What subscribers add to Connections
Connections subscribers receive access to Connections Bot, which provides personalized analysis including difficulty, skill, uniqueness, category, mistakes, and guess-by-guess performance. These labels let a player look beyond whether the puzzle was solved and examine how distinctive or efficient the route was.

Archived puzzles count toward completion and win-rate statistics, but they do not affect daily streaks. That distinction matters if you are deciding whether a subscription is worthwhile: the paid layer is primarily for analysis and past puzzles, not for unlocking the current free puzzle.
Someone who plays only the current daily board may have little practical need for the archive. Someone who wants to practice older puzzles, review mistakes, or compare performance over time gets more value from the subscriber features. The choice depends on replay and analysis habits rather than on access to the basic daily format.

- A challenge built around decoys and overlapping possibilities.

Play both if your ideal routine changes by day
The games complement each other because they exercise different habits. Wordle gives you a bounded deduction exercise; Connections gives you a classification problem with a social edge. Playing both takes advantage of the fact that neither requires a physical product or specialized equipment, while keeping the daily commitment small.
Recommended Free Tools
Playing both can also make the contrast clearer. A Wordle result can leave you wanting a more open-ended puzzle; a difficult Connections board can make a tightly constrained letter problem feel refreshing. Since each game has its own daily board and failure condition, alternating them does not require learning a large ruleset.
Practical solving approaches
A disciplined Wordle routine
- Start with a deliberate candidate. Use a five-letter word that can reveal useful letter information rather than choosing randomly.
- Read the color feedback before guessing again. Treat each result as a constraint on the next candidate instead of repeating an unproductive pattern.
- Separate information guesses from answer guesses. When several words remain plausible, choose the guess that best distinguishes them while staying within the six-attempt limit.
- Protect the final attempts. Once the pattern is narrow, avoid spending a guess on a word that does not test the remaining possibilities.
- Track confirmed positions and exclusions separately. A letter being present does not automatically reveal its position, so keep both kinds of information in view.
These are strategic implications of Wordle’s six-guess structure, not guarantees of a win. The day’s vocabulary and your familiarity with it still determine the baseline difficulty.
A cautious Connections routine
- Scan for exact relationships first. Look for words that share a specific, defensible property rather than a broad association.
- Test the proposed group against the whole board. If a fifth word appears to fit, your category may be too general or may be a deliberate decoy.
- Use the mistake limit deliberately. Submit a group when its connection is stronger than the alternatives, not merely because four words can be made to sound related.
- After a correct group, rebuild your interpretation. Removing four words can expose a category that was hidden by the original overlap.
- Reserve the least certain category for later when possible. The board’s color labels describe editorial difficulty, but your own confidence should determine the order of attack.
- Say the category in a precise sentence. If you cannot explain why all four words fit and why plausible extras do not, the grouping may be too broad.
Connections rewards flexibility. A word that seemed central to one theory may become irrelevant once a more precise category appears, so avoid becoming attached to the first plausible grouping.

Connections debuted in beta on June 12, 2023. TechCrunch reported in August 2023 that it had become The New York Times’ second most popular game behind Wordle. The New York Times Company later announced that more than 11 billion puzzles were solved across its Games portfolio in 2025.
Those figures show that both games belong to a large and successful puzzle ecosystem. They do not provide a current head-to-head player count, and they should not be read as evidence that one game is better for every player. The 11-billion figure covers the entire Games portfolio, not just these two titles.

“Each day reveals a clever, thoughtful, relevant, human-made puzzle that tries to trick you, and makes the challenge of solving it extremely rewarding.”
Jonathan Knight, head of Games at The New York Times, quoted by TechCrunch in 2023
That description captures the common design goal while leaving room for two very different experiences: Wordle’s satisfaction comes from narrowing a hidden word, while Connections’ satisfaction comes from discovering the intended structure among competing interpretations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I play Wordle or Connections?
Choose Wordle for one five-letter answer, six guesses, and clear letter feedback. Choose Connections for a 16-word board, four categories, semantic leaps, and more room for discussion.
Which is harder, Wordle or NYT Connections?
Neither is objectively harder. Wordle depends more on vocabulary and letter-level deduction; Connections depends more on category knowledge, ambiguity management, and resisting decoys.
Is Connections better for groups while Wordle is better solo?
That is a useful tendency, not a rule. Connections naturally invites debate about categories, while Wordle’s compact board and shareable guess grid fit a solo routine. Either can be played collaboratively.
Do I need a New York Times subscription to play either game?
Connections’ core game is free on supported web and app platforms without registration. Signing in preserves progress across devices. Connections Bot and the archive require qualifying Games or All Access access. Check the current New York Times terms for Wordle availability and subscription details.
How far back does the Connections archive go?
The archive available to All Access and Games subscribers reaches back to June 12, 2023. Archived puzzles count toward completion and win-rate statistics but do not change daily streaks.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Wordle is the better fit for controlled, letter-by-letter deduction; Connections is the better fit for semantic discovery, ambiguity, and group discussion. Try both, then keep the one whose uncertainty you enjoy.
