Wordle is a six-guess exercise in narrowing down one hidden five-letter word. Connections asks you to divide 16 visible words into four groups of four, each linked by a theme. Wordle therefore emphasizes letter-level deduction and feedback; Connections emphasizes classification, association, and resisting tempting overlaps. Neither game has an official, directly comparable difficulty score, so the better choice depends on how you prefer to reason.

Both are short daily puzzles, but they create pressure in different ways. Wordle gives you a small stream of information about one answer. Connections gives you the entire word set at once, then asks you to discover which relationships are intentional. The result is not a simple easy-versus-hard contest: the same player may find one effortless and the other frustrating.

Wordle and Connections at a glance

Feature Wordle Connections
Core task Guess one five-letter answer. Sort 16 words into four groups of four.
Information available Feedback arrives after each guess and narrows the possible answer. All 16 candidates are visible immediately, but several may plausibly fit more than one theme.
Mistake pressure Six tries or fewer. Wrong group selections count as mistakes; the NYT statistics definition treats a completion in under four mistakes as a win.
Difficulty labeling No published cross-game rating in the official material. Groups are color-coded from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest.
Daily access Listed by The New York Times among daily puzzles available without a qualifying Games subscription. Playable through the NYT Games website, The Athletic site, the NYT Games app, and the NYT News app; the daily game releases at midnight in your time zone.

The table describes mechanics, not a universal ranking. A player who quickly recognizes word relationships may find Connections natural but struggle with Wordle’s letter constraints, while a strong vocabulary-and-pattern solver may have the opposite experience.

How NYT Connections works

The board and objective

Each daily board presents 16 words. Your job is to select four words that share a meaningful connection, submit the group, and continue until four groups have been identified. The New York Times Help Center describes it as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.”

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The relationship can be straightforwardly semantic, such as a group of fish, or based on wordplay, such as words that begin with fire. The intended relationship is chosen by the editors, who curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. There is exactly one solution, even when the wording makes multiple interpretations look plausible.

That last point is central to the experience. A word may appear to belong to a familiar subject group while also completing a phrase or wordplay pattern elsewhere. The board is designed so that a merely plausible set is not necessarily the intended set. You need four items that match the same relationship with comparable precision, not three strong matches plus one word that can be stretched to fit.

What the colors mean

Once a group is solved, it is assigned a color that signals relative category difficulty:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • Yellow: the easiest category.
  • Green: more difficult than yellow.
  • Blue: harder still.
  • Purple: the trickiest category, often involving wordplay or an indirect relationship.

These colors rank the four categories inside a Connections puzzle. They are not a scale that can be converted into a Wordle difficulty rating. A purple category can be the hardest part of one board without making that entire board objectively harder than that day’s Wordle.

Mistakes and the win statistic

A selection that is not one of the intended groups is recorded as a mistake. Connections keeps track of mistakes in its statistics, and the NYT statistics page defines a win as completing the board in under four mistakes. That published definition is a statistical convention; it is not evidence that Connections and Wordle have equivalent odds, completion times, or effort.

Because a mistake is attached to a proposed group rather than to one guessed word, the two games’ counters should not be treated as interchangeable. Four wrong group submissions and four Wordle guesses represent different kinds of information and different consequences.

A reliable solving sequence

  1. Scan all 16 words before committing. Look for obvious sets, but also note words that could belong to more than one apparent theme. Seeing the whole board is useful only if you resist locking onto the first attractive pattern.
  2. Test the exact relationship. Ask whether all four words fit the same category at the same level of specificity. A broad association that fits three words is not enough, and a fourth word that fits only through an unrelated definition is a warning sign.
  3. Submit the most defensible group. Removing a confirmed group reduces the number of competing interpretations on the board. Prefer the set with the clearest common rule, not merely the set you noticed first.
  4. Re-evaluate leftovers. After each solved group, inspect the remaining words without assuming that your first theory was correct. A word that looked like a distraction may become the key to the next category.
  5. Reserve time for wordplay. If three groups look semantic, the remaining category may depend on a shared prefix, suffix, phrase, title, or other linguistic construction. The editors’ examples include words beginning with “fire,” showing that not every group is a subject category.
  6. Use the mistake allowance deliberately. If two possible groups remain, compare all four members of each candidate before submitting. A quick guess can cost a mistake without eliminating much uncertainty.

The central skill is not merely spotting a connection; it is identifying the editor’s intended connection while avoiding “near-miss” groups that happen to share a looser property. Solvers who enjoy explaining why every item belongs may find that standard more satisfying than simply recognizing a theme.

How Wordle works

The six-try limit

The NYT Games app listing describes Wordle as guessing a five-letter word in six tries or fewer. Every guess is an attempt to identify the single answer, so each decision should either test useful letters or place known letters in better positions.

The limit creates a compact loop: make a guess, read the result, update your possibilities, and decide whether the next entry should gather information or commit to a likely answer. There is no second board of categories to manage; all uncertainty concerns one hidden word.

Feedback narrows one hidden answer

After a guess, Wordle returns tile feedback about the letters you entered. That result lets you retain confirmed information, reject letters that cannot be in the answer, and test new arrangements. Unlike Connections, where the complete word list is visible from the start, Wordle hides the target and reveals information incrementally.

This makes the information structure comparatively explicit. A result can confirm a letter’s position, indicate that a letter belongs elsewhere, or show that a tested letter should be excluded. You then combine those constraints with normal spelling patterns. The game still permits uncertainty when several valid-looking five-letter words share the same known letters, which is why a final guess can feel like a choice between candidates rather than a straightforward deduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical guess-by-guess method

  1. Use an information-rich opening word. Favor a normal five-letter word that tests several common letters rather than repeating the same letter without a reason.
  2. Record confirmed positions. Keep letters that the feedback places correctly and avoid moving them unless the game’s feedback shows a different interpretation is necessary.
  3. Separate excluded and unused letters. Do not spend later guesses on letters the feedback has ruled out; use those attempts to distinguish among remaining candidates.
  4. Account for repeated letters. A letter may appear more than once in the answer, so a result that confirms one occurrence does not automatically confirm every copy.
  5. Protect the final attempts. When several words remain possible, choose a guess that distinguishes them rather than making a blind answer attempt.

Wordle’s challenge is therefore a bounded information problem: six attempts, one target, and feedback that changes the set of viable answers after every guess. The game rewards players who track what each guess has ruled in and ruled out instead of treating every turn as an isolated word guess.

Which is harder: Connections or Wordle?

There is no official statistic that compares the two games’ relative difficulty, completion time, or player performance on a common scale. The New York Times rule and subscription pages describe how each game works and where it is available, but they do not publish a cross-game difficulty index. A single puzzle’s outcome or an unrelated survey would not establish such a ranking.

The reasoning each game demands

Comparison axis Wordle Connections
Primary reasoning Letter deduction, spelling patterns, and choosing guesses that reveal information. Semantic association, classification, wordplay recognition, and identifying the intended category.
Where uncertainty sits One answer is hidden; feedback progressively reduces the candidate list. All words are shown, but the correct grouping is hidden and overlaps are deliberately plausible.
Cost of a wrong move Every guess consumes one of six attempts. A wrong group selection adds a mistake and can make the remaining board harder to interpret.
Difficulty signal No official daily color scale that can be compared with Connections. Yellow, green, blue, and purple indicate the relative difficulty of that puzzle’s four categories.

Why players disagree about the answer

Wordle tends to feel tougher when you dislike constrained spelling searches, have trouble managing letter-position information, or reach several plausible five-letter candidates at once. Connections tends to feel tougher when broad associations distract you, when categories overlap, or when the final group relies on wordplay rather than a concrete subject.

Connections can also create a distinctive “false confidence” problem: seeing four words that fit a category does not prove that category is the intended one. Wordle’s feedback is narrower but more explicit; Connections supplies more raw material and asks you to infer the organizing principle. Those are different forms of uncertainty, so calling one objectively harder would overstate what the official evidence establishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Difficulty can also change from day to day within each format. Connections explicitly labels the relative difficulty of its four categories, while no equivalent official color band is supplied for Wordle. That difference tells you how the Connections editor has ranked categories on that board; it does not provide a shared measurement system. There is likewise no published figure establishing that one game takes longer, produces fewer wins, or demands more skill across the player population.

Which puzzle should you try first?

Choose Wordle if you prefer a compact deduction loop

  • You want one clear target instead of several simultaneous categories.
  • You enjoy testing letters, positions, and spelling patterns.
  • You prefer immediate feedback after each action.
  • You like a fixed six-attempt boundary that makes every guess consequential.

Wordle is the more natural starting point when the satisfaction comes from turning partial information into a single answer. It is also a good fit if you prefer a visible record of how each guess changed the possibilities.

Choose Connections if you enjoy classification and “aha” moments

  • You like finding relationships among apparently unrelated words.
  • You are comfortable comparing several hypotheses at once.
  • You enjoy discovering why a group belongs together, including wordplay categories.
  • You do not mind revising an attractive theory when another grouping better explains all four words.

Connections is the better fit when the reward is recognizing an organizing idea rather than completing a letter pattern. Its most satisfying moment often comes after the solve, when the four categories explain why the board was deliberately misleading.

Try both when you want different kinds of practice

The games complement one another. Wordle trains sequential deduction from feedback; Connections trains simultaneous scanning, categorization, and resistance to misleading similarities. Playing one does not provide a shortcut for the other because the information structures and failure conditions differ. Trying both is reasonable if you want a brief daily routine with two distinct kinds of word reasoning rather than a single measure of performance.

Daily games and subscription access

The New York Times lists both Wordle and Connections among its daily puzzles that are available without a qualifying Games subscription. A paid plan is therefore not necessary simply to choose between the standard daily versions. Readers should distinguish access to the current daily puzzle from paid extras: subscription features add tools and archives but are not a requirement for the basic daily choice.

Where Connections is available

The NYT Help Center says Connections can be played without registering or signing in on the NYT Games website, The Athletic site, the NYT Games app, and the NYT News app. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s time zone, so the date on your device determines when the next board appears. That timing is local to the player rather than tied to one universal publication hour.

Why an account can still be useful

Signing in helps carry Connections progress across devices. Subscriber features include Connections Bot analysis and access to the Connections archive. The official Connections page says that archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. These are additional features, not prerequisites for playing the current daily puzzle.

If you want more puzzles away from a screen, Puzzle Mania!: Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee, Minis and More! is a named physical collection that bundles related formats. It is an optional source of extra puzzle content, not an accessory needed to play either daily game. Edition, availability, price, and any purchase terms can change, so check the current listing before buying.

Variation Format How it differs from the daily game
Wordle in 1 Five rounds, with unlimited guesses in each round and Wordle-style color feedback. It is not the standard one-answer, six-try daily Wordle format.
Connections 3×3 Nine items arranged into three groups of three, with up to four mistakes. It is not the standard 16-item, four-groups-of-four Connections board.

When comparing difficulty or deciding which game to start, use the core daily rules. A bonus mode’s extra rounds, different board size, or altered mistake allowance changes the task enough that its result should not be treated as evidence about the standard game. A player who has tried Wordle in 1 or Connections 3×3 has sampled a related format, not a replacement for the daily game described above.

Common mistakes when comparing the games

  • Treating Connections colors as a universal rating. Purple means the hardest category on that board, not that the entire puzzle is harder than Wordle.
  • Assuming visible words make Connections easy. Visibility is offset by overlapping categories and the need to infer the editor’s exact intention.
  • Counting guesses and mistakes as equivalent units. A Wordle guess tests one candidate word; a Connections mistake comes from submitting a proposed group. They measure different actions.
  • Assuming four Connections mistakes and four Wordle guesses mean the same thing. The NYT statistics page uses “under four mistakes” as its win definition for Connections, while Wordle’s rule is six guesses or fewer. Those thresholds belong to separate systems.
  • Using subscription status as a difficulty signal. Access rules describe availability and extras, not how challenging a puzzle is.
  • Comparing a single day’s result as if it were a long-term statistic. Without a shared, published measure across both games, one unusually easy or hard board cannot rank them.
  • Confusing bonus modes with the core games. Wordle in 1 and Connections 3×3 alter the number of rounds, items, groups, or mistakes, so they should be identified separately.

Frequently asked questions

Which is harder, Wordle or Connections?

Neither has a universally established advantage. Wordle concentrates on letter and spelling deduction under six guesses, while Connections asks you to classify 16 words and avoid plausible overlaps. Are Wordle in 1 and Connections 3×3 the same games?

No. They are bonus variations. Wordle in 1 has five rounds with unlimited guesses in each round, and Connections 3×3 has nine items arranged into three groups of three with up to four mistakes. Those rules differ from the standard daily formats.

Bottom line: pick by the kind of thinking you enjoy

Start with Wordle for a focused, six-attempt search through letter and spelling possibilities. Start with Connections for a broader classification challenge in which 16 visible words must be resolved into four deliberately tricky themes. The official descriptions support that mechanical distinction, but they do not establish one universal winner for difficulty. Your preferred reasoning style—not a published cross-game score—should decide which puzzle you try first.
