If NYT Connections is blank, stuck on its loading screen, or rejects a word group, first compare the web page with the NYT Games app (and, where available, the News app). That single check separates a local app or browser problem from an account, network, timing, or wider service problem. Then apply the fix for the failing surface: update and restart the app, reset the browser session and cookies, test another network or browser, and report the issue through Connections if it survives those checks.
Start by identifying what is actually failing
Open the game directly at nytimes.com/games/connections, then try the NYT Games app if it is installed. Connections is also available in the News app. The daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s local timezone, so a page opened during that release boundary can behave differently until the new puzzle is available.
Record the result of each test rather than changing several settings at once. The pattern tells you where to concentrate:

There is no authoritative incident-rate or outage-percentage figure in NYT’s troubleshooting guidance. Do not infer that a failure is widespread from a social-media post or from one device; the cross-surface tests above are more reliable evidence for your own case.

Check timing, access, and sign-in before resetting anything
Allow for the daily release boundary
Connections’ daily puzzle appears at midnight in the player’s timezone. If you opened the previous puzzle just before midnight, or the new one immediately after, reload once after local midnight has passed. A puzzle that is still transitioning is different from a page that remains broken for hours.
Use the direct game entry points
Try the direct web address rather than an old bookmark or an embedded link in another page. The supported surfaces listed by NYT are the Games app, the Connections web page, and the News app. If one of those opens normally, you have a working reference for diagnosing the failing surface.
Understand what sign-in changes
Connections is free to play and does not require an account. NYT recommends signing in if you want progress to follow you between devices. A sign-in failure can therefore look like a loading or progress problem even when the puzzle itself is available. Note whether the game fails before login, immediately after login, or only when you try to save or resume progress.

Use the steps in this order. After each one, reopen Connections and check whether the board appears and accepts an intentionally simple selection. The order starts with reversible actions and ends with reinstalling.

- Update the app. Install any pending NYT app update from your device’s app store. An older build can fail after a server-side change even when other games still open.
- Update the device operating system. Apply the operating-system update recommended for the phone or tablet. Restarting an outdated system without updating it does not address compatibility problems.
- Force-quit and reopen the app. Remove the NYT app from the device’s recent-apps view (or use the platform’s force-quit control), wait a few seconds, and launch it again. NYT’s mobile guidance specifically recommends restarting an app that is not displaying or loading properly.
- Start a new account session. If the app opens but the game remains stuck, sign out, close the app, reopen it, and sign back in. This replaces an expired or inconsistent session token rather than merely redrawing the same screen.
- Reinstall only after the earlier steps fail. Uninstall the NYT app, install it again from the official app store, and sign in if you use an account. NYT states that reinstalling does not remove saved articles, recipes, or Games streaks and statistics. You may still need to wait for the app to download current data after the first launch.
If the app is the only failing surface, do not begin by changing your router or deleting unrelated device data. The web version gives you a way to play while you isolate the app, and it provides a comparison for support.
When the web page loads but Connections rejects answers
Refresh once, then reset cached page data
Refresh the page once to rule out a transient connection. If the board still displays old content, buttons do nothing, or a group is rejected unexpectedly, clear the browser’s cached files and NYT cookies. NYT explains that browser cache and cookies can become outdated or conflict with login attempts. Clear the data for NYTimes.com rather than wiping every saved site if your browser offers a per-site option.
Make sure cookies are allowed
Cookies must be accepted for NYTimes.com. A strict privacy mode that blocks the site’s required cookies can leave the puzzle visible while preventing answer validation or account state from being saved. Temporarily allow the site’s cookies, reload the game, and test again. You can restore your preferred blocking rules after identifying the setting that caused the failure.

Test without password managers and other extensions
Password-manager extensions, content blockers, script controls, and other add-ons can alter NYT pages. Open a private window with extensions disabled, or use a clean browser profile, and load Connections there. If the game works, return to the normal window and disable extensions one at a time; Chrome’s loading guidance recommends this isolation method for finding a conflicting extension. Re-enable extensions after each test so you know which one changes the result.

Use a second browser
A second browser is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent workaround. If the same account and network work in one browser but not another, focus on the failing browser’s stored site data, extensions, cookie policy, or security settings. If both browsers fail identically, move to the network and account checks instead of repeatedly deleting cache.
Separate a network or security problem from a game problem
Try Connections on cellular data instead of Wi-Fi, or on a different trusted Wi-Fi network. Then repeat the test in a second browser or private window. This creates two independent comparisons:
- Works on cellular but not Wi-Fi: inspect the Wi-Fi router, DNS filtering, captive-portal login, firewall, or network security product. A workplace, school, or family filter may block scripts or connection requests that the game needs.
- Works on Wi-Fi but not cellular: check the mobile carrier connection, data restrictions, and any device-level VPN or filtering profile.
- Fails on both networks but only in one browser: return to that browser’s cookies, extensions, and security settings.
- Fails on every tested network and surface: preserve the evidence and escalate; changing random settings is unlikely to help.
Chrome’s official loading-error guidance lists connection problems, extensions, and firewall or security settings among possible causes. Temporarily disabling a security layer is useful only as a short diagnostic test on a network you control; restore it immediately after the comparison. Do not lower security permanently just to make one page load.

Because Connections can be played without signing in, first test the game while logged out if the site permits it. If logged-out play works but your signed-in session does not, the account session is the boundary. Sign out, close the browser or app, reopen it, and sign in again with the intended email account. In a browser, follow NYT’s normal login flow rather than entering credentials into an unexpected pop-up.

If you play on several devices, compare whether the same account shows the problem everywhere. A failure that follows the account across browsers and networks is different from a failure confined to one device. Write down whether an old puzzle, a newly released puzzle, or every puzzle triggers the error; that distinction helps support reproduce it.
Use a decision path instead of repeating the same fix
- Open the direct web game. If it loads, keep it available as your working comparison while you repair the app or primary browser.
- Try the other official surface. Use the Games app or News app if you normally use the web, and use the web if the app is failing.
- Classify the failure. Is the board blank, permanently loading, unable to record a tap, or rejecting a submitted group? Note the exact wording.
- Apply only the matching local reset. App problems get the update/force-quit/session/reinstall sequence; browser problems get the cache/cookie/extension sequence.
- Change one external variable. Test another browser or network. A change in outcome identifies where the fault most likely sits.
- Escalate when the pattern is broad or persistent. If both official surfaces fail after the comparisons, submit feedback with the evidence rather than continuing to erase local data.
This method also prevents a common misdiagnosis: an answer that is not accepted is not automatically a wrong answer caused by the puzzle. If the page cannot save a selection, the same group fails in a clean browser, or the board is showing stale content, treat it as a technical symptom until the clean test proves otherwise.

If Connections still fails in the app and on the web, use the question-mark icon in the game and choose Feedback. Describe what happened and submit the report. NYT’s mobile guidance likewise directs people who cannot resolve a loading problem to report a bug or send app feedback.

- Device model and operating-system version.
- Browser name and version, or the NYT app version.
- Whether you were on Wi-Fi or cellular data, and whether a second network changed the result.
- Whether the web page, Games app, and News app each worked or failed.
- Whether you were signed in, and whether signing out changed the result.
- The exact error text, the time and timezone, and whether the problem occurred near midnight’s puzzle release.
- What you tried: refresh, cache and cookie reset, extension test, force-quit, update, and reinstall.
A screenshot can show a blank board or error message, but avoid including passwords, payment details, or other private account information. Leave the app and browser versions visible in your notes so support can distinguish an old client from a current one.
What the symptom usually means
“It is stuck on the loading screen”
First compare app and web. If only the app is stuck, update, force-quit, create a new session, and reinstall as a last resort. If only the browser is stuck, clear NYT cookies and cache, allow cookies, and test without extensions. If every surface is stuck, test a different network and record the failure for Feedback.
“The app works for other games, but Connections does not”
Other games loading proves that the app can start, but it does not prove that Connections’ puzzle data or session state is healthy. Update the app and operating system, force-quit, and sign in again. Then open the direct web game. If the web game works, keep the issue scoped to the app; if it fails too, perform the network and browser comparisons.
“My answer is not accepted”
Refresh once and check whether the board is current. Clear cached files and NYT cookies, ensure cookies are accepted, and retry in a private window without password-manager or other extensions. If the same submission fails across a clean browser and another network, report the exact group and error through the question-mark icon rather than repeatedly changing guesses.
“It stopped working right after midnight”
Wait until midnight has fully passed in your timezone, then reload. Note the local time in any report. A release-boundary problem has a different reproduction pattern from a failure that occurs on every puzzle throughout the day.
Bottom line
Use a working surface as your control: compare the direct web page with the Games or News app, then change one variable at a time. Repair the app with updates, a force-quit, a fresh login, and—only if needed—a reinstall; repair the browser with fresh cache and cookies, accepted cookies, and an extension-free test. A failure that follows you across surfaces and networks belongs in Connections’ question-mark menu under Feedback, with your device, versions, network, timing, and exact error documented.
