NYT Connections is free to play each day, and you can use official hints, track a daily streak, share your result, or—if your subscription includes it—play archived puzzles. The key distinction: archive games affect some statistics but never count toward current or maximum streaks.
How does NYT Connections work?
Each puzzle gives you 16 words. Find four groups of four that share something in common. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is easiest, followed by green and blue, while purple is the trickiest. Each puzzle has exactly one solution, but words are deliberately chosen so that some may seem to fit more than one category. NYT’s Connections Help Center explains the rules.
When does the daily puzzle come out, and when does a streak reset?
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in your timezone. A current streak counts consecutive daily wins, and you must solve that day’s puzzle before midnight local time to keep it. Finishing after midnight local time breaks the streak and starts a new one; NYT says a broken Connections streak cannot be reset. The release time and streak cutoff are both local to you, but describe different events. NYT’s official FAQ documents both.
How can I get a hint without seeing the answer?
NYT’s Connections Companion is an official community forum where players can find hints, comments, and a difficulty score. Comments can contain spoilers, so the Help Center advises finishing the puzzle first or scrolling at your own risk. Treat any hint as potentially revealing; the official guidance does not promise spoiler-free comments.

Can I play old Connections puzzles?
Yes, if your account has an eligible All Access or Games subscription. The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023. Subscribers can open it in a browser at nytimes.com/crosswords using the navigation menu, or in the Connections Archive section of the Games app. The archive is not available in the News app’s Play tab.
Archive play affects some statistics, but it does not change your current or maximum streak. A completed archive puzzle cannot be played again. The daily puzzle and archive therefore serve different purposes:

The statistics page lists puzzles completed, win rate, current streak, maximum streak, perfect puzzles, and a mistake histogram. NYT says the stats reflect play from June 15, 2024 onward. If you want progress, stats, and streaks to carry across devices, sign in to your NYT account. When you are signed out, progress is stored locally on that device. An account is not required to play the daily puzzle. See the Games app help for account and app details.

How do I share my Connections results?
- Submit your final guess to complete the puzzle.
- On the statistics page, select Share Your Results.
- Choose an available sharing option, or copy the result and paste it into a text field, such as a message, email, or social post.
Options vary by device, so the exact share sheet may differ. Copying the result gives you a way to share it even when a preferred app is not offered directly.
What is Connections Bot, and who can use it?
Connections Bot provides personalized post-game analysis for All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers. Its features include difficulty comparisons, ratings, category difficulty and solve order, common mistakes with AI-generated descriptions, and analysis of each guess. It is a review of your completed play, not a hint system for the live puzzle.

Does Connections Sports Edition have an archive?
NYT says Sports Edition follows the same rules as Connections, but it does not have an archive. The archive access described above applies to regular Connections.
