Choose local NVMe when a node can hold its working set and the fastest, simplest path matters. Choose NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) when several nodes need shared capacity, datasets exceed local drives, or storage must scale independently from compute. Neither is universally faster. Local NVMe avoids a network hop, while NVMe-oF adds a fabric whose transport, topology, target, host software and workload determine the result.
For AI and high-performance computing (HPC), evaluate application-level data loading, checkpoint save and restore, capacity, sharing, failure behavior and operations—not just a drive’s sequential bandwidth. A hybrid design is often practical: local NVMe for scratch and hot data, with NVMe-oF for shared datasets, checkpoints or capacity that cannot be economically duplicated on every node.
What local NVMe and NVMe-oF actually are
Local NVMe: storage attached to the compute node
A local NVMe SSD connects to a server through its PCIe fabric. The operating system and applications on that node issue NVMe commands directly to the device. There is no storage-network traversal, and the drive’s capacity is physically installed in the server.

This arrangement is a natural fit for node-local scratch space, preprocessing caches, temporary spill files and datasets that can be staged to each worker. It also keeps the storage dependency close to the process using it. The trade-off is that capacity is purchased and managed per node; making the same data available elsewhere requires staging, replication or another serving layer.

NVMe over Fabrics: NVMe commands over a network
NVMe-oF transports the NVMe command set from a host to a remote storage target through a fabric. The target may be a pool of NVMe devices, and several hosts can be given access to shared capacity when the target and access configuration permit it. NVM Express describes NVMe-oF as a way to disaggregate storage from compute and serve data to multiple systems (NVM Express AI and NVMe-oF overview).
The remote path introduces switches or other fabric components, network adapters, target controllers and additional software. Consequently, observed latency and throughput depend on the complete path rather than on the SSD alone. NVMe-oF is not one performance level: TCP, RDMA and Fibre Channel transports have different implementation and tuning requirements.
Decision summary
| Decision axis | Local NVMe | NVMe-oF |
|---|---|---|
| Data path | Direct PCIe attachment inside the server. | NVMe commands travel over a fabric to a remote target. |
| Sharing | Capacity is attached to one node unless data is separately replicated or served. | A centralized pool can be presented to multiple hosts, subject to target, fabric and access controls. |
| Scaling | Capacity is added per node, so storage and compute tend to scale together. | Storage can scale independently and be allocated to many compute nodes. |
| Latency and performance | Avoids network traversal; device, PCIe topology, software and workload still matter. | The remote path adds transport and fabric overhead; results depend on transport, topology, target, host stack and workload. |
| Operations | Fewer shared-target and fabric dependencies. | Requires compatible host and target implementations, fabric configuration, monitoring and failure handling. |
| Best starting point | Node-local working sets, scratch, caches or data that can be staged to every worker. | Large shared datasets, disaggregated infrastructure and cross-node access where local capacity is insufficient or cumbersome. |
How AI storage behavior changes by phase
NVM Express characterizes AI as a sequence of phases with different storage demands: data ingest, preprocessing, training, checkpointing and archiving (NVM Express). A design that is excellent for one phase may be inefficient in another.
Ingest and preprocessing
Ingest commonly reads a large source set and writes transformed shards, indexes or intermediate files. If each worker can hold its assigned shard, local NVMe can provide a simple high-throughput staging tier. NVMe-oF becomes attractive when the source is too large to duplicate on every node, when workers are frequently added or removed, or when a common dataset must remain in one authoritative pool.
Measure the time from a job’s start until the first batch reaches an accelerator. A high aggregate SSD specification does not prove that the data pipeline is keeping GPUs busy; metadata operations, small reads, decompression, CPU processing and synchronization may dominate.
Training reads
Training can generate concurrent reads from many workers with changing queue depths and access sizes. Local drives remove the fabric from this path but require data placement and capacity on each node. A shared NVMe-oF target can simplify placement and let several jobs consume the same data, but the target, network links and host queues must sustain the combined concurrency.

Checkpointing and restore
Checkpoint writes can create bursts that differ sharply from steady-state training reads. Restore can delay a job restart or require several GPUs to read the same state. NVM Express identifies checkpoint save and restore as storage-sensitive phases and notes that shared storage can provide flexibility when state must be loaded by different GPUs (NVM Express).

If a checkpoint is written to local NVMe, define how it is copied or protected when a node fails. If it is written to NVMe-oF, test target failover, path recovery and the effect of several jobs checkpointing simultaneously.
Archiving
Archive traffic is usually less latency-sensitive than the training loop, so it may be a poor reason to place every hot file on an expensive local tier. Use the architecture that meets retention, access and recovery requirements while keeping the active working set on the tier that your measurements show is useful.
NVMe-oF transport choices
NVMe/TCP
NVMe/TCP uses standard Ethernet and IP networking. It can fit organizations that already operate TCP fabrics and want to avoid introducing an RDMA-specific operational model. Its performance still depends on NICs, switches, queues, congestion, target software and host tuning. The NVMe/TCP transport specification is identified as revision 1.3 in the NVMe specifications current on August 4, 2026 (NVM Express specifications page).
NVMe over RDMA
RDMA is intended to move data between systems with low processor and operating-system involvement. NVM Express defines it as “a way of exchanging information between two computers’ main memory in a network without involving the processor, cache, or OS of either computer” (NVM Express NVMe over RDMA Transport Specification).
That description does not guarantee application performance. RDMA deployments still depend on the chosen implementation, NIC offloads, fabric configuration, congestion behavior, MTU, target media and workload. The RDMA transport specification page lists revision 1.3 as ratified July 31, 2026 (NVM Express).

Fibre Channel
Fibre Channel is another NVMe-oF transport. It may be relevant where an organization already operates a Fibre Channel storage fabric and has compatible host and target implementations. Compare it using the same application measurements as TCP and RDMA rather than assuming that the transport name predicts the winner.
The standalone NVMe-oF specification page is marked as a historical reference; current NVMe transport definitions are placed in the NVMe 2.0 specification material (NVM Express).
Why benchmark results do not transfer automatically
There is no current neutral statistic establishing that local NVMe is faster than NVMe-oF, or vice versa, for every AI or HPC workload. A valid comparison must state the transport, network speed and topology, target implementation, flash media, host stack, I/O sizes, queue depths, read/write mix, concurrency and working-set size.
SNIA’s comparison work varied synthetic and real-world workloads, RDMA transports (iWARP and RoCEv2), TCP, 100Gb Ethernet, 1500-byte and 9000-byte MTUs, and different flash LUNs (SNIA, Optimizing NVMe over Fabrics). Those variables explain why a result measured on one system cannot be presented as a universal local-versus-remote rule.
Historical GPU-direct figures: useful context, not a buying promise
| Reported result | What it measured | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 3.8× lower end-to-end latency and up to 8.8× throughput | NVIDIA’s RAPIDS cuDF CSV reader compared with its original implementation. | A 2019, workload-specific GPUDirect Storage comparison; it is not an NVMe-oF-versus-local-NVMe benchmark. |
| More than 215 GB/s into GPU memory | Additive bandwidth from system memory, local NVMe drives and remote NVMe-oF or RAID storage on a DGX-2 system. | A historical, system-specific result; the cited source contrasts it with a 50 GB/s CPU system-memory path. |
| 6.7× at 1 TB and 32.8× at 10 TB | TPC-H Query 4 speedups in a GPU-accelerated demonstration. | Specific query and system conditions; it does not establish a general storage-architecture winner. |
These figures come from NVIDIA’s 2019 GPUDirect Storage demonstration (NVIDIA Developer). Treat them as evidence that a direct storage-to-GPU path can change a pipeline, not as expected performance for a current deployment.
GPU-direct storage and accelerator pipelines
GPUDirect Storage can provide a path from local or remote NVMe to GPU memory that avoids CPU bounce buffers when the platform supports it (NVIDIA Developer). It does not make remote storage identical to local storage. Supported drivers, adapters, storage, software versions and configuration determine whether the path is available and how it behaves.

When evaluating a GPU-resident pipeline, verify the complete supported stack, then measure time spent in storage, CPU preprocessing, GPU transfer and synchronization separately. Compare local and remote sources with the same dataset, batch size, concurrency and failure conditions. A high GPU-side bandwidth result may not improve end-to-end training if input decoding or checkpoint serialization remains the bottleneck.

- Describe the workload. Record ingest volume, transformed-data volume, file and object sizes, read/write ratio, concurrency, queue-depth range, checkpoint size and restore frequency.
- Map the data lifecycle. Identify which files are immutable training data, temporary scratch, shared state, checkpoints and archives. Decide which data must survive a node failure and which can be regenerated.
- Test a local baseline. Stage a representative working set on node-local NVMe. Measure time to first batch, sustained input rate, preprocessing completion, checkpoint write and restore-to-first-batch.
- Test each candidate fabric. For NVMe-oF, record whether the transport is TCP, RDMA variant or Fibre Channel; document NICs, switch links, topology, MTU, target software and flash media.
- Use application-level metrics. Capture accelerator utilization, batches per second, checkpoint duration, restore duration, tail latency and error or retry behavior. Do not substitute peak sequential bandwidth for these outcomes.
- Vary pressure. Repeat tests with multiple jobs, realistic queue depths, the intended working-set size and simultaneous checkpoint activity. Shared targets must be tested at the concurrency they will actually serve.
- Exercise failures. Disconnect a path in a controlled test, restart a host, reboot a target component and verify what applications observe. Document retry, failover, recovery time and any required remount or job restart.
- Calculate placement and operations cost. Include per-node drive purchases, network adapters, switches or fabrics, target capacity, spare capacity, replication, monitoring and the staff effort to operate the design.
- Choose by bottleneck and policy. Select local, remote or hybrid placement based on measured job time, required sharing, capacity growth, recovery objectives and operational tolerance.
When local NVMe is the better fit
- The working set fits comfortably on each compute node.
- Data can be staged or regenerated without unacceptable startup time.
- Temporary scratch and spill I/O dominate the workload.
- Sharing is not required, or a separate replication process is already accepted.
- You want the fewest fabric, target and shared-service dependencies.
Plan capacity with headroom for filesystem overhead, checkpoints and concurrent jobs. Confirm the server’s PCIe lane layout, drive endurance, thermals and replacement process; a nominally fast SSD can be constrained by the server topology or by sustained-write behavior.
When NVMe-oF is the better fit
- Datasets exceed practical capacity on one node or would be wasteful to duplicate across all nodes.
- Several compute nodes or GPU pools need access to the same data.
- Compute nodes are replaced or scaled independently from storage.
- Checkpoint state must be available to different nodes after rescheduling.
- A storage team can operate the target, fabric, access controls, monitoring and recovery procedures.
Design the target and network for aggregate concurrency, not the bandwidth of one SSD. Confirm that host and target implementations support the required transport and access model, and establish how namespaces are isolated, mounted and recovered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a hybrid design is common
A hybrid layout places latency-sensitive or temporary data on local NVMe while keeping authoritative, shared or oversized datasets on NVMe-oF. A training job might read a shared dataset, stage hot shards locally, write transient preprocessing output locally, and send durable checkpoints to a remote pool. This arrangement avoids forcing every byte through the fabric while preserving centralized access where duplication is undesirable.
Hybrid designs add placement logic and data-movement steps. Measure staging time and include it in job startup and recovery objectives. Define cache invalidation, versioning and behavior when the remote pool is unavailable; otherwise a fast local cache can create correctness or restart surprises.

HPC-specific considerations
HPC applications vary from checkpoint-heavy simulations to workloads with large shared files, many small metadata operations or node-local temporary data. Shared remote block storage can simplify capacity and access patterns, while per-node scratch can keep temporary data close to compute. The correct choice follows the application’s I/O pattern and the cluster’s operational model, not a blanket protocol preference.

Run representative application traces or full production-like jobs. Report the same conditions for every candidate: process count, I/O size, synchronization points, filesystem or block layout, queue depths, network topology and target load. A synthetic test that matches only large sequential reads can conceal the small, concurrent operations that dominate a real application.
Operational pitfalls and recovery checks
Assuming RDMA automatically wins
RDMA reduces certain software overheads, but it does not remove congestion, target contention, poor queue sizing or an underpowered flash pool. Validate the end-to-end path and include the exact RDMA variant and configuration in your test record.
Comparing peak specifications
Drive bandwidth, link rate and IOPS are component limits. The reader needs job-level results: data-loading delay, accelerator idle time, checkpoint duration and restore time. Use the same workload and concurrency when comparing local and remote systems.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring capacity and placement
Local NVMe may look fast until every node must hold a duplicate dataset and reserve space for checkpoints. NVMe-oF may look flexible until a shared target becomes the bottleneck or a network failure affects many jobs. Model capacity growth, utilization, spare capacity and failure domains before selecting an architecture.
Under-testing recovery
Document what happens when a local drive fails, a fabric path disappears, a target reboots or a host is rescheduled. Confirm whether jobs retry, pause, fail, remount or require manual intervention, and measure recovery time against the workload’s service objective.
Overstating GPU-direct support
GPU-direct paths require compatible software, drivers, adapters and storage. Treat support as a verified configuration requirement, not an assumption based on the presence of NVMe-oF or a GPU.
Implementation checklist
- Define working-set size, sharing, durability and growth requirements.
- Measure ingest, preprocessing, training reads, checkpoint writes and restores separately.
- Record I/O sizes, queue depths, read/write mix, concurrency and target utilization.
- For NVMe-oF, document transport, NICs, switches, MTU, topology, host stack and target implementation.
- Verify PCIe topology, endurance and thermals for local drives.
- Test GPU-direct support with the exact driver and software stack intended for production.
- Include multi-job contention, path failures, target recovery and node replacement in acceptance tests.
- Report hardware and software versions with every benchmark result.
Bottom line
Local NVMe is the straightforward answer for bounded, node-local working sets and scratch data. NVMe-oF is the strategic answer when shared capacity, independent scaling or cross-node checkpoint access matters more than eliminating every network hop. For most serious AI and HPC designs, the defensible choice comes from measuring the complete application path and assigning each data class to the tier that satisfies its latency, capacity, sharing and recovery requirements.
