NVIDIA says its Vera Rubin NVL72 design uses a printed-circuit-board midplane to remove cables, hoses, and fans from each compute tray. The change is confined to the tray: the rack still contains cabling, liquid-cooling hardware, and power infrastructure. NVIDIA says it plans to contribute the upgraded rack and tray design to the Open Compute Project (OCP); the available OCP record confirms earlier NVIDIA work, not approval of this specific Vera Rubin design.
What NVIDIA changed in the Vera Rubin compute tray
In NVIDIA’s description, a printed-circuit-board midplane replaces traditional cable-based connections between compute trays and the rest of the rack. That lets the compute tray itself omit cables, coolant hoses, and fans. The midplane is the key distinction: connections are handled at the rack interface rather than routed through each tray. NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin POD technical blog describes the design and its claimed assembly-time benefit.
The tray remains a dense compute module, not a standalone server. NVIDIA’s DGX Vera Rubin hardware guide, updated October 7, 2026, specifies that each 1RU compute tray contains two Vera CPUs and four Rubin GPUs. The documented rack has 18 compute trays and nine 1RU NVLink 6 switch trays.

The claim describes the compute tray, not the whole Vera Rubin NVL72 rack. The rack guide lists a passive copper cable cartridge backplane for NVLink, cable management, power shelves, a bus bar, and liquid-cooling manifolds. Cold plates attached to compute and networking components carry heat into the rack’s liquid-cooling system.
#1 Best Overall
- What You Will Get: the package comes with 4 pieces of 1U 24 Slot cable management brushes and more than 16 pieces of screws, which can satisfy the installation of rack panels
- Efficient Organization: the rack cable management strip panel can help you organize the cables in and out of the cabinet, and it can meet the finishing work of many cables at the same time, making them look neat and uniform overall; Meanwhile, it can also maintain proper air circulation to prevent dust and dirt from entering rack mount
- Fine Workmanship: the rack cable management is made of quality metal material, with nice craftsmanship, strong and firm, rust proof and durable; The appearance design is exquisite, which can not only meet the requirements of cable arrangement but also play a decorative role in the blank frame
- Easy to Assemble: each rack mount cable management panel just needs 4 screws and nuts, and the installations are simple and fast, the matte texture makes it comfy to touch, which will not break your rack cabinet, gives you nice using experience
- Moderate Size: the cable management brush panel measures about 48.5 x 4.7 x 4.5 cm/ 19 x 1.85 x 1.77 inches, 24 slots, and each slot is about 0.28 inch, proper for 19 rack mount, server cabinet, shelf and more; Proper size can fit the requirements of large size cabinet cabling, you can use it according to your actual needs, you can share it with your family members, colleagues and more
- Interconnect: The tray’s cable-free arrangement does not eliminate rack-level copper NVLink connections.
- Cooling: Hoses and fans are absent from the compute tray as described, but the rack still uses manifolds and cold plates for liquid cooling.
- Power: Power shelves and a bus bar remain part of the rack infrastructure.
So the design relocates and consolidates interfaces; it does not make the rack cable-free, hose-free, or independent of cooling and power equipment.
What the design could mean for assembly
NVIDIA claims compute-tray assembly falls from nearly two hours to five minutes with the midplane approach. That is NVIDIA’s stated figure, not the result of an independent timing study. It indicates the company’s expected assembly advantage, but the cited material does not establish comparative service times in deployed systems or quantify maintenance outcomes.

What is known about the OCP status
NVIDIA says it plans to contribute the upgraded Vera Rubin rack and compute-tray innovations as an OCP open standard. Its event announcement also describes a 45°C liquid-cooling design and partner readiness. That stated plan should not be confused with an approved OCP specification: the published OCP account confirms earlier NVIDIA contributions for the MGX-based GB200 NVL72, while the available OCP information does not confirm approval of this Vera Rubin design.

The earlier GB200 NVL72 contribution provides context for the effort. OCP describes a reinforced rack architecture, an NVLink cable cartridge, a high-capacity bus bar, liquid-cooling interfaces, and 1RU liquid-cooled MGX compute and switch trays. NVIDIA says the goal of such contributions is interoperability across vendors in power, cooling, and mechanical interfaces. OCP’s account of its Open Systems for AI initiative frames this as part of building a multi-vendor supply chain for AI systems. Neither statement establishes that Vera Rubin’s planned contribution has already completed the standards process. OCP Foundation’s announcement covers the earlier contribution and initiative; NVIDIA’s OCP event announcement describes the Vera Rubin plan.

- 19” EIA 310D COMPLIANT: The hole pattern fits standard 19-inch equipment, ensuring compatibility with EIA 310-D specifications for easy integration into existing rack systems.
How broad is partner readiness?
NVIDIA’s event announcement said more than 50 MGX system and component partners were preparing around the Vera Rubin architecture. NVIDIA’s technical blog later described more than 80 global partners in the MGX ecosystem. Those are different vendor-reported ecosystem counts; neither establishes that every partner has a shipping Vera Rubin system or component.
