Nvidia and Broadcom participate in AI infrastructure at different layers. Nvidia sells a broad, integrated accelerated-computing platform: processors, networking, complete systems, software and deployment support. Broadcom’s disclosed AI exposure centers on custom AI accelerators and AI networking, within a larger company that also sells semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software.
The latest figures illustrate the difference but are not a synchronized head-to-head quarter. Nvidia reported $89.0 billion in Data Center revenue and $96.2 billion in total revenue for fiscal Q2 2027, ended July 26, 2026. Broadcom reported $10.8 billion of AI semiconductor revenue, up 143% year over year, and $22.187 billion of total revenue for fiscal Q2 2026, ended May 3, 2026. Those categories, fiscal calendars and reporting dates are different, so neither percentage proves that one company has a larger or better AI business.
What is the essential difference between Nvidia and Broadcom in AI?
Nvidia’s AI business is presented as a platform. Its Data Center organization combines compute and networking for accelerated computing and AI, then adds systems, software, toolkits, storage and security infrastructure. Customers can buy a large portion of an AI data-center stack from one supplier or use Nvidia components through partners that build and operate complete systems.

Broadcom’s AI semiconductor business is more focused. Its chief executive attributes growth to two categories: custom AI accelerators designed for particular large customers or workloads, and AI networking. Broadcom also owns a substantial infrastructure-software business, but that software revenue should not be counted as AI semiconductor revenue.

In practical terms, Nvidia is more exposed to demand for a broad, standardized platform, while Broadcom is more exposed to custom silicon programs, networking capacity and the spending plans of a smaller number of very large customers. Both can benefit from expanding AI data centers, but they face different execution, customer and supply-chain risks.
What the latest reported numbers actually show
The available results come from different fiscal quarters. Treating them as if they were simultaneous market shares would create a misleading comparison.
| Company and period | Reported AI-related measure | Total company revenue | What the measure includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nvidia fiscal Q2 2027, quarter ended July 26, 2026; released August 26, 2026 | $89.0 billion Data Center revenue | $96.2 billion | Data Center compute and networking platforms, with related systems and products described by Nvidia |
| Broadcom fiscal Q2 2026, quarter ended May 3, 2026; released June 3, 2026 | $10.8 billion AI semiconductor revenue, up 143% year over year | $22.187 billion | AI semiconductor revenue attributed to custom AI accelerators and AI networking |
Nvidia’s Data Center figure is a business segment measure. Broadcom’s figure is a category within its semiconductor activity, not a segment covering the entire company. Nvidia’s Data Center revenue also includes networking and other platform activity, so it is not a pure GPU number. Conversely, Broadcom’s AI semiconductor figure does not include its infrastructure-software segment. The figures are useful for understanding each company’s disclosed exposure, not for calculating relative AI market share.
Nvidia’s fiscal Q3 2027 management outlook called for $108.0 billion in revenue, plus or minus 2%. That is an expectation, not a reported result. The outlook did not assume Data Center compute revenue from China. Broadcom’s fiscal Q3 2026 outlook called for $16.0 billion of AI semiconductor revenue, also a forecast rather than a result.
How Nvidia’s AI platform works
Compute, networking and complete systems
Nvidia describes Data Center as a combination of compute and networking platforms for accelerated computing and AI. The offer can include accelerator processors, CPUs, high-speed interconnects, switches, servers and complete rack-scale systems. Its fiscal Q2 2027 release also described Vera Rubin systems in production, networking products, AI storage and security infrastructure.
This breadth matters because training and inference performance depends on the whole cluster. Accelerators must exchange data quickly, remain supplied with storage, and run under software that schedules workloads across thousands of devices. A platform vendor can capture more value when customers buy those pieces together, although it also carries responsibility for coordinating more components and product transitions.
Software and deployment ecosystem
Nvidia’s AI proposition extends beyond silicon. Its software and toolkits are intended to help developers train models, optimize inference, manage clusters and deploy applications through cloud and enterprise partners. The company frames this as an integrated platform spanning data-center compute, networking, systems, software and deployments.

What Nvidia’s $89.0 billion Data Center number does and does not mean
The $89.0 billion figure is Nvidia-reported Data Center revenue for one fiscal quarter, not a standalone measure of “AI chip sales.” It includes the company’s Data Center portfolio, whose stated scope covers compute and networking platforms. The figure shows the scale of Nvidia’s current Data Center exposure; it does not isolate training from inference, hardware from software, or AI from every other accelerated-computing workload.
How Broadcom’s AI business works
Custom AI accelerators
Broadcom supplies custom accelerator programs in which a customer’s requirements influence the chip design, packaging, software interface and production plan. A custom accelerator can be optimized for a particular model family, inference workload, power envelope or data-center architecture. The customer may obtain better workload economics or control than with a general-purpose solution, while Broadcom earns design, manufacturing and networking revenue tied to that program.
The trade-off is concentration. A custom program is often linked to a small number of very large buyers. If a customer delays deployment, changes its design, develops an internal alternative or shifts to another supplier, the effect on Broadcom’s revenue can be material.

Broadcom’s chief executive said fiscal Q2 2026 AI semiconductor growth was driven by “increasing demand for custom AI accelerators and AI networking.” Networking silicon moves data among accelerators, servers and storage. As clusters grow, switching capacity, bandwidth and power efficiency become limiting factors alongside compute performance.
Broadcom therefore participates in AI even when a customer uses another company’s general-purpose accelerators. Its networking products can be embedded in a wider system assembled by cloud providers, original-equipment manufacturers or infrastructure partners.
Semiconductor solutions plus infrastructure software
Broadcom reports two broad businesses: semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software. The $10.8 billion AI semiconductor figure belongs to the semiconductor side. Infrastructure software is a material part of the company and should be analyzed separately from the growth rate of AI semiconductors.
Keeping the businesses separate prevents two common errors: treating all Broadcom revenue as AI-related, and assuming that strong AI semiconductor growth describes the performance of the entire company. Software can add recurring or contract-based revenue characteristics, while semiconductor programs are more closely tied to product cycles, customer designs and manufacturing schedules.
Nvidia versus Broadcom across the main business dimensions
| Dimension | Nvidia | Broadcom |
|---|---|---|
| Primary AI proposition | Integrated accelerated-computing platform spanning compute, networking, systems, software and deployments | Custom AI accelerators and AI networking, alongside other semiconductors and infrastructure software |
| Reported metric in the latest surfaced results | $89.0 billion Data Center revenue in fiscal Q2 2027 | $10.8 billion AI semiconductor revenue in fiscal Q2 2026 |
| Metric scope | Segment-level Data Center revenue; includes compute and networking platforms | AI category within semiconductor revenue; excludes infrastructure software |
| Customer value proposition | A validated platform and software ecosystem that can span much of an AI cluster | Customer-specific silicon and high-speed networking tailored to a design or workload |
| Customer exposure | Broad platform demand, but large cloud and enterprise buyers still influence volume and timing | Greater sensitivity to significant-customer concentration, program timing and customers that may also develop alternatives |
| Supply model | Dependence on third parties for manufacturing, assembly, packaging and testing | Outsourced manufacturing and a limited supplier base are disclosed risks |
| Business mix outside AI | Data Center sits within a broader Nvidia portfolio; the reported figure is not all-company AI revenue | Infrastructure software is a major business and is distinct from AI semiconductor results |
| Geographic policy exposure highlighted in the latest outlook | Fiscal Q3 2027 outlook assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China | Specific comparable China assumption was not stated in the figures summarized here |
Customer concentration and competitive dynamics
Nvidia’s platform competition
Nvidia competes with other accelerator, processor, networking and systems suppliers, as well as customers that develop internal chips. Its advantage depends on customers accepting the performance, availability, software compatibility and total cost of its platform. A defect, delayed product transition or software problem can affect an entire deployment rather than a single component.

Platform breadth does not eliminate competition. A buyer can combine components from several vendors, use a cloud service instead of owning hardware, or move some workloads to custom silicon. Nvidia’s own risk disclosures identify competition, technological change, product defects, market acceptance and execution during product transitions.
Broadcom’s concentrated-program exposure
Broadcom’s custom model can create deep relationships and large programs, but it also makes order timing important. Its disclosures flag significant-customer demand and the possibility that customers are competitors or can design and source alternatives. A customer may shift from a merchant accelerator to an internally designed chip, postpone a data-center buildout, or negotiate lower pricing as its volumes increase.
Networking can diversify exposure across accelerator architectures, but it does not remove dependence on data-center construction and customer capital budgets. If cluster deployments slow, both custom accelerators and networking orders can be deferred.

Nvidia’s transition and third-party manufacturing risks
Nvidia relies on outside companies for wafer fabrication, assembly, advanced packaging and testing. AI systems also require memory, substrates, networking components, power equipment and rack integration. A shortage or quality problem anywhere in that chain can limit shipments even when end-customer demand is strong.
Rapid product transitions add another risk. Customers may wait for a new architecture instead of buying the current one, while Nvidia must ramp the new design without disrupting supply of existing systems. Product defects, software defects and insufficient validation can increase returns, support costs or deployment delays.
Broadcom’s supplier and manufacturing risks
Broadcom identifies outsourced manufacturing and a limited supplier base as risks. Custom accelerators require long design and qualification cycles; a packaging, yield or component problem can delay a customer’s complete system. Because programs are customer-specific, an engineering change can affect a meaningful share of planned revenue.
Broadcom also faces pricing pressure. Large customers can use their purchasing scale to demand lower prices, and competitors may pursue the same design. A high growth rate in one quarter does not establish that margins or order volumes will remain at that level.
Data-center buildout is a shared constraint
Neither company can convert demand into revenue if customers cannot deploy the infrastructure. Nvidia’s filings discuss constraints involving land, power, data-center shells, construction capacity and capital. Those constraints can postpone orders, change the mix of systems purchased or cause customers to spread a project over more quarters.

AI clusters require substantial electricity, cooling, networking, physical space and financing. A customer may have accelerator purchase commitments but lack an energized site or the capital to complete the rack deployment. This is why reported chip orders should not automatically be interpreted as immediate productive capacity.
Broadcom additionally highlights possible credit exposure when it offers financing or deferred-payment arrangements for AI racks or XPU-based systems. Such structures may help a customer build sooner, but they can leave Broadcom exposed if the customer cannot pay or if the equipment’s value falls before payment is received.
Geography, regulation and China exposure
Nvidia’s fiscal Q3 2027 outlook explicitly assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. That assumption is a company guidance point for that outlook, not a permanent statement about the market. Export-control rules, licensing decisions, product eligibility and enforcement can change, so readers should consult Nvidia’s latest filing and current government rules before drawing a broader conclusion.

Regulation can affect both companies through export restrictions, supply-chain rules, antitrust scrutiny, data-center energy policy and national-security requirements. The effect may be indirect: a customer may redesign a product, use a different manufacturing location or delay a deployment to comply with new rules.
What the Broadcom private-cloud survey adds—and what it cannot prove
Broadcom’s Private Cloud Outlook 2026 reported that 56% of surveyed enterprises were running or planning production AI inference on private cloud, while 41% were using public cloud for production AI inference. The survey was conducted with Radius Tech in February and March 2026 among 1,800 senior IT decision-makers at enterprises with at least 1,000 employees across eight countries.
The same survey reported that 62% of respondents were very or extremely concerned about the infrastructure cost of generative and agentic AI. These figures describe the surveyed respondents, not universal adoption or spending across every business. They are company-published survey results rather than independently measured market totals.
The results are nevertheless relevant to the comparison. Private-cloud inference can increase demand for enterprise-owned servers, networking and software operations, potentially benefiting several parts of both companies’ ecosystems. Concern about cost can also push customers toward custom accelerators or more efficient networking, while causing others to delay production deployments. Survey intent is not the same as completed orders.
How to read each company’s outlook without confusing forecasts and results
Nvidia
Nvidia reported $96.2 billion of total revenue and $89.0 billion of Data Center revenue for fiscal Q2 2027. Separately, management expected $108.0 billion of total revenue, plus or minus 2%, for fiscal Q3 2027. The latter is guidance. It should be tested against the subsequent reported quarter rather than treated as achieved revenue.

The China assumption belongs to that same Q3 outlook. It helps explain the conditions management used when making the forecast, but it does not quantify Nvidia’s potential China revenue or settle the long-term policy question.
Broadcom
Broadcom reported $10.8 billion of AI semiconductor revenue in fiscal Q2 2026, up 143% year over year. Management then expected $16.0 billion of AI semiconductor revenue for fiscal Q3 2026. The expected figure should not be combined with the reported figure or described as realized growth.
Because Broadcom’s fiscal Q2 ended May 3, 2026 and Nvidia’s ended July 26, 2026, the periods are separated by nearly three months. Product ramps, customer orders, currency, supply availability and accounting timing may differ materially between them.

Questions to ask when evaluating the two AI businesses
- What exactly is being measured? Identify whether a number is a segment, a product category, total company revenue, management guidance or a survey response.
- Which fiscal period does it cover? Align quarter-end dates before comparing growth rates or revenue scale.
- How concentrated are the customers? Determine whether a few buyers account for a large share of orders and whether those buyers can develop alternatives.
- Can the supply chain deliver? Check manufacturing, packaging, memory, networking, power and data-center capacity rather than looking only at chip demand.
- What happens if deployment is delayed? Consider land, power, construction, financing and regulatory constraints that can move revenue between quarters.
- Which risks are company-specific? Nvidia’s platform transition and export exposure differ from Broadcom’s custom-program concentration, supplier dependence and potential financing exposure.
- Is a statement evidence or management characterization? Executive comments explain how management views demand; they are not independent proof of customer profitability or durable competitive advantage.
Executive statements in context
Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said in the fiscal Q2 2027 release: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue,” This is an executive characterization of the market, not independent evidence that every customer’s AI deployment is profitable.
Broadcom president and CEO Hock Tan said in the fiscal Q2 2026 release: “Q2 semiconductor revenue from AI of $10.8 billion grew 143% year-over-year, above our forecast, driven by increasing demand for custom AI accelerators and AI networking,” The statement identifies the drivers Broadcom attributes to its result; it does not make the two companies’ revenue definitions equivalent.
Prashanth Shenoy, vice president of marketing for the VMware Cloud Foundation Division at Broadcom, said in the company’s Private Cloud Outlook 2026 announcement: “As enterprises move from pilots to running AI at production scale, infrastructure and operational costs spike, security gaps surface, and complexity compounds.” That observation is tied to Broadcom’s company-published survey and should be read as an executive interpretation of those respondents’ views.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The evidence supports a clear business-model distinction. Nvidia offers a broad AI infrastructure platform and currently reports enormous Data Center exposure. Broadcom reports rapid growth in a narrower AI semiconductor category built around custom accelerators and networking, while its overall company includes infrastructure software.
The evidence does not establish a guaranteed winner, a synchronized market-share ranking or a prediction of future investment performance. Results depend on customer deployment, product execution, supply availability, energy and construction capacity, regulation, pricing and the ability of each company to manage its particular concentration risks.
