Yes—NVIDIA was publicly describing generative AI as a major computing shift roughly two weeks before OpenAI released ChatGPT. Its Nov. 16, 2022 fiscal third-quarter report paired unusually explicit language about large language models (LLMs) and generative AI with a data-center business growing rapidly despite a collapse in gaming. The evidence does not show that NVIDIA knew ChatGPT’s launch date or could calculate the eventual market size. It does show that the company had already built products, software and training around the workloads that made ChatGPT possible.
What happened before ChatGPT launched
ChatGPT became publicly available on Nov. 30, 2022. About two weeks earlier, NVIDIA reported fiscal Q3 results for the period ended Oct. 30. The surface numbers looked poor: total revenue was down 17% year over year, gaming revenue dropped 51% to $1.6 billion, export controls affecting China weighed on data-center sales, and NVIDIA recorded a $702 million inventory charge.
Underneath those figures, data-center revenue rose 31% year over year to a record $3.8 billion. That made the segment approximately 2.4 times the size of gaming revenue. The contrast was a material signal that demand for accelerated computing was shifting toward cloud and enterprise AI rather than consumer graphics alone. The results and dates are reported in a 2026 retrospective by Anders Bylund at The Motley Fool.

Management named the workloads directly
CFO Colette Kress described demand involving “large language models, recommendation systems and generative AI.” That wording matters because it identifies model types and production workloads, not just a generic commitment to artificial intelligence.

CEO Jensen Huang called the moment “the beginning of the era of generative AI.” On the same call, he explained NVIDIA’s broader strategy: “It takes software to open new markets. Chips don’t open new markets.” The quotations are reproduced in the contemporaneous earnings-call coverage and transcript (reported summary; Q3 2022 transcript).
NVIDIA’s investor presentation also characterized LLMs as widely viewed as the most important AI models. None of this proves that executives knew OpenAI would release ChatGPT two weeks later. It demonstrates that generative models were already a named, prioritized market before that release became a mainstream event.
The H100 was already shipping
The clearest hardware clue was the NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU. NVIDIA said it had begun shipping the data-center accelerator during the quarter, that customers were “clamoring” for it, and that large-volume shipments were expected in early 2023. In other words, the hardware designed for demanding AI training and inference was entering customer systems before ChatGPT’s public debut.

An H100 is enterprise infrastructure, not a plug-in upgrade for a typical desktop. Buyers must check server compatibility, power delivery, cooling, networking, software support and regional availability. Live retail inventory, seller quality and current pricing are not established here, so any purchase decision requires a current check with an authorized system vendor. The relevant product name is NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU.
The signal was a complete platform, not one chip
The earnings call described an infrastructure stack aimed at operating large models:
- Accelerators: GPUs for training and inference.
- Inference software: Triton and tooling for serving trained models.
- Scale-out systems: Multi-GPU and multi-node inference for models including OpenAI GPT-3 and NVIDIA Megatron 530B.
- Networking: InfiniBand and ConnectX technologies to move data among accelerators.
- Developer enablement: Cloud integrations, frameworks and training intended to turn hardware into deployable applications.
This is why the “prediction” story is stronger than a single product announcement. NVIDIA was positioning itself as a full-stack computing company. Huang’s software comment describes the commercial logic: a chip can supply compute, but software and system integration make new AI services practical.

Why the numbers were easy to miss
| Signal in the Nov. 16, 2022 report | Reported result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Data-center revenue | $3.8 billion, up 31% year over year | Accelerated computing demand was expanding despite wider headwinds |
| Gaming revenue | $1.6 billion, down 51% year over year | Consumer graphics was in a sharp contraction |
| Relative scale | Data center approximately 2.4 times gaming | The business mix had already shifted toward infrastructure |
| Inventory charge | $702 million | A near-term financial problem that obscured the structural trend |
Export restrictions affecting China and the inventory charge made the quarter look like a setback. Reading only the consolidated headline or gaming result would have hidden the segment where AI demand was accelerating.

NVIDIA’s official conference material provides an earlier timeline. Its Feb. 14, 2022 GTC announcement listed accelerated computing, deep learning, data science, digital twins, networking, and data-center, cloud and edge computing. The event schedule contained more than 900 sessions and 1,400 speakers. NVIDIA’s fall 2022 announcement highlighted AI centers, digital twins, metaverse technology and industry-specific sessions.
The same conference materials documented free Deep Learning Institute labs as well as paid workshops and certificates. That developer ecosystem matters: it shows NVIDIA was cultivating skills, software adoption and production use cases months before ChatGPT made generative AI familiar to the general public.

Did NVIDIA predict ChatGPT?
Not in the narrow sense. The available evidence does not establish that NVIDIA knew OpenAI’s exact release plan, the product’s eventual user growth or the future size of the generative-AI market. The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: NVIDIA recognized the underlying technical and commercial direction early.
Its evidence quality is strongest where it consists of contemporaneous financial results, direct management quotations, product shipments and official event programs. Calling the episode a precise prediction would add hindsight that the record does not support. Calling it an early read on LLM infrastructure is consistent with the dates, numbers and statements.

How to evaluate similar “early signal” claims
- Check timing: Compare the statement or shipment date with the public launch that supposedly validated it.
- Identify the workload: Distinguish LLM training and inference from recommendation systems, graphics or simulation.
- Look for system completeness: Check whether the company addressed networking, inference software, cloud deployment and support, not only an accelerator.
- Rank the evidence: Prefer reported financial results, dated quotations and official product or conference records over retrospective interpretation.
- Test practical access: Enterprise hardware still requires suitable power, cooling, compatibility, procurement and trained operators.
The Bottom Line
NVIDIA did not demonstrably foresee ChatGPT’s exact launch, but its Nov. 2022 report shows that it had already identified generative AI and LLMs as major workloads. Rising data-center revenue, an H100 already shipping, and a coordinated GPU-software-networking-and-training stack make the pre-ChatGPT signal credible rather than a story created entirely in hindsight.
