Nvidia shipped 678,000 data-center AI accelerators in China from January through June 2026, a 44% drop from the same period in 2025, according to IDC data reported by Reuters on October 13. Nvidia held 34% of China’s data-center AI-chip market during H1 2026. Reuters attributed the lower supply to U.S. export controls and said domestic competitors, led by Huawei, gained ground.
What the H1 2026 figures show
The numbers describe shipments of AI accelerators for data-center use in China—not Nvidia’s sales of every product in the country. The 678,000 figure covers January to June 2026, and the 44% comparison is against January to June 2025. IDC supplied the data cited in Reuters’s report; Reuters said it had reviewed an IDC report. The original report’s full methodology is not available in the account described here.
That distinction matters because shipments are a measure of units moving into a market over a period. They are not, by themselves, a measure of revenue, the number of chips installed and operating, or the performance of a particular product. The report excerpt also does not define the unit at a more granular level or break the total down by Nvidia model.
Why Nvidia’s shipments fell
U.S. export controls constrained supply
Reuters cited U.S. export controls as a reason for the reduced supply of Nvidia accelerators to China. The report does not quantify how much of the 44% decline was caused by those restrictions, so the figure should not be read as a standalone measurement of their effect. It does not provide a breakdown separating export-control impacts from other possible influences on shipments.

Domestic suppliers gained ground
Reuters also reported that Chinese competitors led by Huawei gained ground as Nvidia’s shipments declined. This provides competitive context for the market-share figure, but the available account does not give a vendor-by-vendor shipment table, individual company shares, or a quantified explanation of how much each rival contributed to Nvidia’s decline. It therefore supports the conclusion that domestic competition strengthened, not a precise ranking or estimate of its effect.
What Nvidia’s 34% market share means
Nvidia accounted for 34% of China’s data-center AI-chip market in H1 2026, according to the IDC report described by Reuters. That is a share for the specified market and six-month period; it is not Nvidia’s share of China’s entire semiconductor industry, all computing chips, or consumer graphics cards.

- Bulk Pack without retail box
The report excerpt does not give a directly comparable Nvidia market-share figure for H1 2025. The 44% shipment decline cannot be converted into a percentage-point change in share: shipment volume and market share are different measures, and the latter also depends on what other suppliers shipped. The available information establishes Nvidia’s H1 2026 share, but not how many points it rose or fell year over year.

Competition is increasingly about whole systems
IDC said the competitive focus was shifting beyond the performance of individual chips toward system-level capabilities, including how accelerators work together in larger clusters. That puts the significance of the figures in a wider frame: data-center buyers and suppliers compete not only over a chip’s standalone capabilities, but also over the ability to use many chips as part of a larger computing system.

This observation is strategic context, not a product comparison. The account does not provide benchmarks, prices, model-level specifications, or a detailed comparison of Nvidia and domestic systems. It does not establish that system-level capabilities caused the shipment decline or quantify their influence on market share.

The figures are best treated as a snapshot of reported shipments and market share, rather than a complete explanation of China’s AI-chip market. Reuters published its report on October 13, 2026, using IDC data and an IDC report it said it had seen. The underlying report’s full methodology is not available in the cited account, and no named person is quoted. Those limits leave important details—such as model mix and the precise contribution of each factor—to the report’s stated scope.
