The SHIELD TV Pro settings most worth checking are AI upscaling, display mode, Match frame rate (beta), and processor mode. None is a guaranteed upgrade: the right choice depends on the video, app, television, and whether you value a more natural picture, smoother motion, or quieter operation. Start with the defaults, change one setting at a time, and keep track of what you changed so you can undo it.
Start by checking whether the picture needs upscaling
On SHIELD TV Pro, Enhanced upscaling is enabled by default. NVIDIA describes AI-enhanced upscaling as a way to upscale 720p and 1080p HD video to 4K using the Tegra X1+ processor, but that supported use case does not mean every video will look better. The result depends on the source and your preferences.
Compare Basic and AI-Enhanced on your own video
- Open Settings > AI upscaling.
- Select AI-Enhanced and use the side-by-side demo to compare it with Basic upscaling.
- Try the comparison on the kinds of video you actually watch. Adjust Detail enhancement if needed, or switch back if the image looks less natural to you.
NVIDIA says AI upscaling is unavailable for some content, including video below 480p. If the option does not apply to a particular video, that alone does not indicate a problem with the television or SHIELD.

For resolution and refresh rate, NVIDIA recommends keeping the default display setting for the best overall experience. A refresh rate other than 60 Hz can slow apps that use 60 Hz, including the Android TV home page, games, and 60 Hz videos. A mode that appears preferable for one video may therefore make everyday navigation or other content feel worse.

Where to find resolution and display modes
- Go to Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Resolution to choose from common display modes.
- For custom modes, open Advanced display settings.
- Check that the selected mode is supported by your TV. If you use Dolby Vision, select a Dolby Vision-compatible mode where needed.
If you are troubleshooting, note the original setting and change only one item at a time. That makes it easier to identify which change helped—or to restore the previous behavior.
Use Match frame rate (beta) for cadence judder, not every playback problem
Video frame rate and display refresh rate do not always match. NVIDIA says SHIELD normally converts video to match the display. Match frame rate (beta) can instead change the display refresh rate to match the content, which may help with periodic judder when the app and TV work with the feature.

The setting is experimental, not a universal automatic fix. NVIDIA warns that some apps may not support it and some TVs may have difficulty with it. You must activate it during playback; when playback ends, the display returns to its original refresh rate. NVIDIA notes that Plex and Kodi support automatic refresh-rate matching.

How to decide whether to try it
- Consider it when motion has a regular, repeated hitch that looks like cadence judder.
- During playback, use the Match frame rate control if the app exposes it, then check whether motion improves and the TV continues to display correctly.
- If the display behaves unexpectedly or the change makes no difference, stop using the feature for that playback rather than treating it as a required setting.
Random pauses are different from periodic judder. A setting that changes frame-rate matching may not resolve interruptions caused by another playback or network issue.

- Works with SHIELD TV 2015/2017/2019 models. Requires upgrade to the latest SHIELD Experience.
- Easy to use in the most darkly lit room. Pick up the remote and the buttons will instantly light up.
- Press the microphone button to access the powerful Google Assistant on your Android TV. Search for new movies, TV shows, or YouTube videos, look up stock prices, or check your commute time, all on your SHIELD TV.
- Customize your menu button with more than 25 choices. Launch your favorite app, enable AI upscaling, or mute your sound, or more! Different options can be applied to up to 3 actions: single press, double press, long press.
- Control your home entertainment center with SHIELD Remote’s built in IR blaster. Control volume, power, or input source.
Choose processor mode for your preferred balance
In its optimization guidance, NVIDIA recommends Max performance. It also describes Optimized as the cooler and quieter option. NVIDIA does not quantify the difference in speed, temperature, or noise, so treat this as a preference choice rather than a measured performance boost.
Separate network interruptions from motion judder
NVIDIA distinguishes periodic jumps or hops associated with a refresh-rate mismatch from random stuttering or pauses. If the symptom is random interruption rather than a regular motion hitch, changing refresh rate may not address the cause. For connectivity, NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Check the connection when interruptions point to a network problem instead of assuming a picture-processing setting will fix them.

A sensible order for trying changes
- Compare Basic and AI-Enhanced upscaling on your usual material, and keep the setting that looks best to you.
- Leave resolution and refresh rate at their defaults unless you have confirmed a specific display need.
- Try Match frame rate during playback only if you see periodic cadence judder and your app and TV behave compatibly.
- Select Max performance or Optimized according to your preference for performance versus cooler, quieter operation.
- When diagnosing a problem, change one setting at a time and reverse any change that makes the experience worse.
Menu wording and behavior may change with SHIELD Experience updates, and app support for frame-rate matching can vary. If a label differs on your device, use the closest corresponding display or playback setting available in its current menus.
