For most demanding buyers, choose the 2019 SHIELD TV Pro. Its 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and two USB ports make it the right model for Plex Media Server, local-media libraries, USB hard drives, heavier games and accessories. Choose the 2019 SHIELD TV tube when you mainly stream and want the smallest enclosure; it has 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and microSD expansion. The discontinued 2015 500GB SHIELD Pro is a used-market option only, and its condition and software support need careful checking.
One major caveat affects any 2026 purchase: NVIDIA raised the SHIELD Pro price to $299 on October 2, 2026, citing substantially higher memory and component costs. Availability and regional pricing can change, so verify the live listing before paying. The hardware remains the 2019-generation Pro despite that price change.
At a glance: which SHIELD TV fits your use?
The current choice is between two 2019 models that share NVIDIA’s Tegra X1+ platform but target different setups. The tube is a compact streaming appliance with enough capacity for a modest app collection. The Pro is a more expandable box intended for users who attach storage, run a server, install games or connect several USB devices.

The central trade-off is not merely 8GB versus 16GB. It is microSD expansion and a smaller enclosure on the tube versus more memory, USB connectivity and a broader storage strategy on the Pro.

What the 2019 SHIELD TV Pro adds
More memory for heavier workloads
The Pro has 3GB of RAM, compared with 2GB in the tube. That extra memory matters when several demanding apps, games or background services are involved. NVIDIA specifically positioned the additional memory and storage for running Plex Media Server and handling high-capacity drives or other USB devices. A streaming-only household may never notice the difference, but a server or gaming setup has a practical reason to choose the Pro.
Plex Media Server and local libraries
If the SHIELD will host Plex Media Server, start with the Pro. NVIDIA’s launch information identifies the Pro’s memory, storage and USB ports as features for that use. The 16GB internal capacity is a better starting point for the operating system, applications and Plex metadata than the tube’s 8GB, but it is not a substitute for library storage. Films, television recordings and large music collections should live on a USB hard drive or another network location rather than consume the internal space.
Running a server also changes your purchase decision. You need room for metadata, a connected drive and the ability to leave the device operating as a home service. The tube’s microSD slot can expand its capacity, but it does not provide the Pro’s pair of USB connections for high-capacity drives and other peripherals.

USB storage and accessories
The Pro has two USB ports. They can connect a flash drive, hard drive or another USB accessory, giving it more flexibility than a device that relies on a single removable card. NVIDIA documents USB adopted storage, in which a compatible USB drive can replace the existing internal storage for apps and data. The replacement drive must be larger than the Pro’s current 16GB internal storage.
Gaming and demanding apps
Both 2019 models use the Tegra X1+ family, with a 256-core GPU and support for playback up to 4K at 60 frames per second. NVIDIA announced up to 25% more performance for Tegra X1+ than its predecessor. Those shared capabilities do not make the two models identical for storage-heavy games: the Pro starts with twice the internal capacity and an additional gigabyte of RAM. If you install large games, several emulators or many media applications, the Pro gives you more headroom before expansion becomes necessary.

When the tube SHIELD TV is the better choice
Streaming-first households
Choose the tube when the SHIELD’s job is primarily streaming services, occasional playback from a network and a relatively small app set. Its 8GB capacity is adequate for that pattern, especially if you remove apps you no longer use. The same Tegra X1+ family means the tube remains capable of up to 4K/60 playback, subject to the service, title and display supporting those settings.
Installations where size matters
The tube’s cylindrical enclosure is designed for compact installations. It can be easier to place behind or beside a television than a conventional set-top box. If you do not need USB hard drives, server software or multiple accessories, paying for the Pro’s extra connectivity may not improve your daily experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicroSD expansion is enough
The tube accepts a microSD card for expansion. That is a sensible solution for users who need more room for apps or games but do not need a USB-connected library. Plan the card as part of the purchase if you already know you will install games or a large number of applications; the built-in 8GB fills more quickly than the Pro’s 16GB.
How much storage should you choose?
8GB tube: small app collection and streaming
- Good for: streaming applications, a few utilities and limited local content.
- Plan for: a microSD card if games, emulators or many apps are part of the setup.
- Limitation: no USB expansion path for a hard drive or other USB device.
The 8GB figure is internal capacity, not necessarily all free space available after the system and preinstalled software. Treat it as a constrained app budget rather than as 8GB of personal media space.
16GB Pro: a stronger base, not a complete media vault
- Good for: Plex metadata, more applications, games and a server-oriented setup.
- Expansion: USB flash storage or a USB hard drive; NVIDIA also documents USB adopted storage.
- Limitation: a large local library still belongs on external or network storage.
The Pro’s 16GB gives applications and metadata more breathing room, but a few gigabytes disappear quickly when you combine games, downloads and server data. Buying the Pro does not eliminate the need to plan where your media library will live.

500GB 2015 Pro: capacity with age attached
The original 2015 SHIELD Pro had a historical 500GB configuration. That capacity can look attractive on a used listing, but it is a discontinued design rather than a current alternative to the 2019 models. A used unit may have a worn internal drive, missing remote or controller, and a different software-support outlook from the current generation. Buy it only when the seller can establish the device’s condition and included hardware and when you accept the risks of an older platform.
Adding storage to a SHIELD TV
Expand the tube with microSD
- Choose a microSD card from a reputable seller with enough capacity for the apps and games you expect to install.
- Insert the card into the tube while the device is powered down or follow the on-screen insertion guidance.
- Open the storage settings when SHIELD detects the card.
- Select the option to format or adopt the card for device storage if you want apps and data installed there. Formatting erases existing contents, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Confirm the result in storage settings and keep free space available for updates and app data.
Menu wording can vary with the installed SHIELD software. The important distinction is whether the card remains portable storage or is adopted as device storage; adopted storage is tied to the SHIELD and is not a convenient card-swapping arrangement.
Expand the Pro with USB storage
- Back up files on the USB drive before connecting it. Adopting a drive as device storage can require reformatting.
- Connect the drive to one of the Pro’s USB ports.
- Wait for SHIELD to detect it and open the storage action offered by the system.
- Choose portable storage for files you intend to move between devices, or device/adopted storage when you want SHIELD to use the drive for applications and internal data.
- If replacing internal storage through NVIDIA’s documented adopted-storage process, use a drive larger than the Pro’s existing 16GB internal storage.
- After formatting, verify the available capacity and move compatible apps or data only after the system confirms the drive is ready.
A USB hard drive is the practical choice for a large local library; a flash drive is more suitable for modest expansion and quiet operation. Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable files because adopted storage is not a backup system.
Which model is right for common scenarios?
“I only stream movies and television.”
Choose the tube if its 8GB capacity and microSD option cover your app list. Choose the Pro if the price difference is acceptable and you want USB storage or more room for future games; the Pro is not required for ordinary streaming.
“I want to run Plex Media Server.”
Choose the 2019 Pro. NVIDIA explicitly identifies its extra memory, internal storage and USB ports as support for Plex Media Server and high-capacity drives. Keep the media library on external USB or network storage and reserve internal capacity for applications, metadata and system needs.

“I will install demanding games.”
The Pro is the safer choice because it has 3GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage and USB expansion. The tube can run a smaller game collection, particularly with a microSD card, but its 2GB/8GB configuration leaves less room.
“I need a compact device behind a television.”
The tube’s compact enclosure is the natural fit when you do not need USB peripherals. Check the physical space and cable routing at your installation point before ordering either model.
“I already own a USB hard drive.”
Choose the Pro. Its two USB ports are designed for high-capacity drives and other USB devices. The tube’s microSD expansion does not provide the same connection for a hard drive.
“I found a cheap 500GB 2015 Pro.”
Consider it only after checking the internal drive, remote, controller and software condition. The 500GB configuration is historical and discontinued; a low purchase price does not remove the possibility of replacement costs or limited support.

2026 price and availability: what changed
Ars Technica reported that NVIDIA ended the base model and raised SHIELD Pro pricing to $299 effective October 2, 2026. NVIDIA spokespersons attributed the increase to substantially higher component costs, including memory. This is a stated price change, not a performance upgrade: the product remains the 2019-generation Pro.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Because stock and prices vary by country and retailer, check the listing immediately before purchase. Confirm that the listing is for the 2019 SHIELD TV Pro rather than a used 2015 unit, and check what remote or other accessories are included. A regional price can also differ from the announced US figure, so do not assume that $299 converts directly to your local checkout total.
Buying checklist
- Workload: streaming only, or Plex, local media, gaming and server tasks?
- Expansion: microSD is enough, or do you need USB hard drives and accessories?
- Memory: is 2GB acceptable, or do your apps justify the Pro’s 3GB?
- Starting capacity: will 8GB cover your apps, or is 16GB a more realistic baseline?
- Library location: internal storage is not a replacement for a large media archive.
- Placement: does the compact tube enclosure matter in your installation?
- Price: verify the current regional listing, especially after the October 2026 change.
- Used purchase: for a 2015 model, verify drive health, included remote/controller and software condition.
Common storage problems and fixes
“The tube is full even though I installed a card.”
Check whether the card was formatted as portable storage rather than adopted device storage. Portable storage may hold files without becoming the installation target for every app. Review the storage settings and move compatible apps or data where the system allows it.
“The Pro rejects my USB drive for adopted storage.”
Confirm that the drive is larger than the Pro’s 16GB internal storage, back up its contents and allow SHIELD to format it when prompted. A drive that contains files may need to be erased before adoption. If you need to preserve the files or move the drive between devices, use portable storage instead.
“My library fills internal space.”
Move the library to a USB hard drive or network location and keep internal storage for applications, metadata and system data. The Pro is designed for this arrangement; the tube is better suited to streaming and smaller local collections.
“A used 2015 Pro has a large drive but behaves unreliably.”
Suspect age-related drive or accessory problems before treating capacity as an advantage. Check the drive’s health, test the included remote and controller, and compare the total cost of replacement parts with a current 2019 model.
Bottom line
Buy the 2019 SHIELD TV Pro when you need Plex Media Server, local media, USB storage, demanding games or room for accessories. Buy the 2019 tube when compact size and straightforward streaming matter more than RAM and USB connectivity. Treat the 2015 500GB Pro as a condition-dependent used purchase, not as the current flagship. Whatever you choose, decide the expansion method—microSD for the tube or USB for the Pro—before you fill the internal storage.
