NVIDIA MGX is not a single server you can order from a standard specification sheet. It is a modular reference architecture that OEMs, ODMs, and ecosystem partners use to build systems ranging from one accelerated server to a complete rack-scale AI platform. MGX defines compatible design patterns and interfaces; the system manufacturer still determines the exact GPUs, CPUs, memory, storage, networking, chassis, cooling, firmware, software, and support package.

That distinction matters when you evaluate an MGX system. NVIDIA describes more than 100 modular design combinations, but a particular vendor may validate only a subset. Treat MGX as the architecture layer, then verify the server maker’s exact bill of materials, support matrix, facility requirements, and upgrade path.

What NVIDIA MGX is—and what it is not

MGX is NVIDIA’s modular reference architecture for accelerated-computing systems. It gives manufacturers reusable building blocks and design guidance so they can develop systems for artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, data science, large language models, edge computing, graphics and video, enterprise AI, and design or simulation workloads.

MGX therefore does not identify one fixed product SKU. Two servers described as MGX systems can have substantially different performance, power draw, service procedures, software support, and expansion options. The manufacturer’s configuration and validation documents are the authority for what you can actually buy and operate.

MGX versus HGX

MGX and HGX are related but not interchangeable terms. NVIDIA describes MGX as a flexible system-design architecture. HGX is an NVLink-connected multi-GPU baseboard intended to scale AI and high-performance-computing systems. An OEM may use an HGX platform within a broader MGX design, but an MGX reference architecture is not automatically an HGX server.

What hardware can be compatible with MGX?

Compatibility has several layers. A component can be listed as an MGX option without being validated in every chassis or with every other option. Ask the system builder for a configuration-specific compatibility statement rather than relying on the architecture name.

Accelerators and host CPUs

NVIDIA’s current MGX overview describes support for rack-scale and PCIe GPU solutions, NVIDIA Blackwell and Rubin GPU solutions, Grace and Vera processors, x86 CPUs, and other Arm-based CPU servers. An earlier MGX specification announcement gave examples including 1U, 2U, and 4U chassis, air- or liquid-cooled designs, NVIDIA GPU products, Grace and GH200 processors, and systems using BlueField-3 or ConnectX-7 networking.

Those examples show the range of the platform, not a universal compatibility promise. Verify the exact GPU model, quantity, interconnect arrangement, CPU socket or module type, memory technology, firmware baseline, and supported operating-system or accelerator-software versions in the offered system.

Networking and system fabric

MGX designs can use different fabrics depending on scale and workload. NVIDIA identifies NVLink, Spectrum-X Ethernet, Quantum InfiniBand, BlueField data-processing units, and other networking choices in its overview. The right choice depends on whether the workload is a single server, a tightly coupled multi-node training cluster, a storage-heavy analytics environment, or an edge deployment.

Compatibility is more than fitting a network adapter into a slot. Check switch models, port speeds, cable types and lengths, transceiver support, topology, congestion control, firmware coordination, and whether the vendor has validated the chosen fabric with the selected GPU and software stack.

Mechanical and rack standards

NVIDIA says MGX supports PCIe, Open Compute Project, and EIA rack specifications. These standards help manufacturers integrate systems into enterprise and cloud data centers, but they do not prove that any particular server will fit your site without additional work.

Request the manufacturer’s dimensional drawings and service-clearance requirements. Confirm rack-unit height, rail compatibility, cable-bend radius, front-to-back or rear-to-front airflow, power inlet location, weight, floor loading, and whether doors or containment systems restrict airflow or maintenance access.

Generational compatibility

MGX is designed to be multi-generational. That does not mean a future GPU, CPU, or interconnect can be dropped into an existing system without qualification. Ask which components and firmware versions are supported today, which upgrades have been validated, whether a power or cooling redesign is needed, and how long the vendor expects to provide firmware, driver, and field-service support.

What can an OEM or ODM customize?

Customization starts with the workload and the operating environment, not with a shopping list of individual parts. The builder chooses a combination that balances throughput, latency, capacity, physical density, serviceability, and facility limits.

Compute and memory

  • Accelerators: Select GPU family, count, PCIe or baseboard arrangement, local accelerator memory, and any required high-speed GPU-to-GPU links.
  • Host processors: Choose Grace, Vera, x86, or another supported Arm option according to CPU-side preprocessing, orchestration, virtualization, and application requirements.
  • System memory: Size memory for datasets, data staging, checkpointing, virtual machines, and CPU-side workloads rather than matching GPU memory alone.
  • Storage: Define local boot and scratch storage, shared storage connectivity, endurance requirements, and the data path needed to keep accelerators fed.

Networking and I/O

The system maker can select network adapters, DPUs, switch fabric, storage interfaces, and configurable I/O layouts. A training cluster may prioritize low-latency scale-out communication, while an inference server may need many conventional Ethernet connections, high-capacity local storage, or isolated management networks.

Chassis and thermal design

MGX examples include 1U, 2U, and 4U systems, as well as air- and liquid-cooled designs. A dense GPU configuration can exceed the practical limits of a standard air-cooled rack even when the server itself is mechanically compliant. Liquid cooling may improve density but introduces coolant distribution, leak detection, service, and facility-water considerations.

Power delivery and serviceability

Power supplies, busbars, connectors, fans, pumps, cable routing, and hot-service procedures are part of the design. Compare redundant power modes, maximum and typical consumption, rack-level distribution, replacement procedures, and the vendor’s field-service model. A configuration that fits the performance target may still be unsuitable if the building cannot deliver its peak power or reject its heat.

How to compare MGX configurations

Use the following criteria when comparing two vendor proposals. Require values for the exact configuration; do not accept a generic MGX capability statement in place of a specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision area Questions to ask the vendor
Workload fit Which AI, HPC, inference, simulation, graphics, or edge workload was the design optimized for? What bottleneck is it intended to remove?
Accelerators Which GPU or accelerator model, quantity, memory capacity, interconnect, and supported software versions are included?
CPU and memory Which processor architecture and memory configuration are installed? What CPU-side and host-memory limits apply?
Storage What local capacity, endurance, boot arrangement, and external storage protocols are supported?
Network fabric Which adapters, switches, speeds, optics, cables, topology, and DPU functions are validated?
Form factor What rack units, dimensions, weight, rail kit, service clearance, airflow direction, and cable space are required?
Cooling Is the system air-cooled or liquid-cooled? What inlet temperature, coolant conditions, flow, and heat-rejection capacity are specified?
Power What are typical and maximum draw, input voltage, redundancy mode, connector type, and rack-level distribution requirements?
Support Which firmware, drivers, operating systems, orchestration tools, and hardware replacements are covered, and for how long?
Upgrade path Which CPU, GPU, memory, network, or storage upgrades are validated, and what power, cooling, or firmware changes do they require?

What does MGX deployment involve?

An MGX deployment may be one server in an existing rack or a coordinated rack-scale system. NVIDIA’s current product description presents a third-generation rack architecture that brings compute and networking servers, cooling, power, connectors, and related infrastructure together. NVIDIA’s October 2026 description of MGX 1.2 adds rack-scale blind-mate liquid cooling, interoperable rack-scale interconnect infrastructure, configurable I/O bays, fanless liquid-cooled compute trays, and standardized power and cooling interfaces.

NVIDIA says the MGX 1.2 architecture supports rack deployments up to 250 kW. That is an architectural deployment capability, not a statement that every MGX rack consumes 250 kW or that a typical facility is ready for it. Your site must be assessed against the exact vendor design.

Single-node deployment

A single-node MGX server is usually the simpler starting point when the workload can run within one system. You still need rack space, compatible power, airflow or coolant, network connectivity, management access, and a software image that supports the selected accelerators and fabric. Confirm whether the vendor supplies validated drivers, firmware bundles, monitoring tools, and remote-management integration.

Rack-scale deployment

Rack-scale systems add shared concerns: coordinated power distribution, coolant manifolds or facility-water connections, blind-mate connectors, rack networking, inter-server topology, synchronized firmware, and procedures for replacing a tray without disturbing the rest of the rack. The rack design must be treated as an integrated system rather than a collection of independent servers.

Deployment checklist

  1. Freeze the workload definition. Document model size, training or inference batch size, concurrency, latency target, dataset movement, storage bandwidth, and expected growth.
  2. Obtain the exact configuration. Get a component list with GPU, CPU, memory, storage, adapters, switches, chassis, power supplies, cooling hardware, firmware, and software versions.
  3. Validate the support matrix. Confirm that every selected component is supported together by the manufacturer, including driver, firmware, operating-system, orchestration, and management-tool versions.
  4. Check the mechanical envelope. Compare rack units, depth, weight, rails, service clearance, cable routing, airflow direction, and floor loading with the installation site.
  5. Check power capacity. Compare maximum and typical draw, redundancy requirements, voltage, connectors, rack distribution, breaker capacity, and backup-generation or UPS limits.
  6. Check thermal capacity. For air cooling, verify inlet temperature, airflow, hot-aisle or cold-aisle arrangement, and heat rejection. For liquid cooling, verify coolant type, temperature, flow, pressure, manifolds, leak detection, and service procedures.
  7. Design the network. Confirm switch capacity, topology, optics, cabling, management networks, storage paths, and any requirements for NVLink, Ethernet, InfiniBand, or DPU functions.
  8. Plan installation and service. Establish delivery access, lifting equipment, rack integration, coolant connection, acceptance testing, spare parts, maintenance windows, and escalation contacts.
  9. Run acceptance tests. Test accelerator visibility, memory, interconnect links, storage throughput, network paths, monitoring, thermal behavior, failover, and recovery using the vendor’s documented procedure.

Facility requirements and common deployment mistakes

Assuming rack compliance means site readiness

PCIe, OCP, and EIA support improves interoperability, but it does not account for every site condition. A compliant rack can still lack adequate depth, cable space, floor loading, power distribution, or cooling capacity. Use the vendor’s installation drawings and environmental limits.

Treating a peak number as normal consumption

GPU systems can have different typical, sustained, and transient power behavior. Size distribution and cooling for the specified maximum and operating profile, while checking how redundancy changes available capacity.

Mixing components from different validation baselines

A newer accelerator, network adapter, or firmware release may be physically compatible but unsupported in the delivered system. Keep a written version matrix and obtain the vendor’s approval before changing drivers, firmware, cables, or cooling hardware.

Underestimating liquid-cooling operations

Liquid cooling can enable higher density, but it adds coolant quality, leak detection, quick-disconnect, manifold, maintenance, and technician-training requirements. Clarify whether the vendor supplies the rack distribution unit, facility interface, monitoring, and replacement procedure.

  • NVIDIA-Certified System: NVIDIA documentation uses this term for a server or node that has passed the applicable certification process.
  • NVIDIA Reference Architecture: This describes how systems are assembled into a cluster, including the relevant design pattern and scale.
  • NVIDIA Design Review Board endorsement: Qualifying partner cluster designs can be reviewed against applicable architecture patterns and published with their configuration, scale range, and endorsement category.
  • MGX association: Indicates that a manufacturer used the MGX architecture; by itself, it does not prove node certification or cluster endorsement.

When procurement documents use one of these terms, ask for the exact model, node configuration, cluster design, endorsement category, and validity information. Do not infer certification merely because a product page mentions MGX.

Partners, availability, and development economics

MGX is delivered through an ecosystem of system manufacturers and infrastructure partners. NVIDIA has named companies such as Supermicro and QCT in MGX materials and has described a broader group of partners contributing servers, racks, power delivery, and cooling solutions. These examples demonstrate the ecosystem model; they do not mean every partner offers every MGX combination, or that a particular configuration is currently available in every region.

NVIDIA reported more than 90 systems from over 25 partners released or in development in 2024. NVIDIA’s current overview says the architecture offers over 100 modular design combinations.

In its 2023 MGX specification announcement, NVIDIA said the architecture could cut system-development costs by up to three-quarters and reduce development time by two-thirds to six months. Those are NVIDIA’s claims about manufacturer development work, not guaranteed savings, delivery times, or purchase prices for every buyer. A proposal should still include the vendor’s actual lead time, integration charges, support terms, and recurring facility costs.

How to request a defensible MGX proposal

Give the vendor a workload and site brief that is specific enough to rule out unsuitable designs. Include accelerator count and memory target, CPU-side requirements, dataset and storage behavior, network topology, rack location, available voltage and capacity, cooling type, operating temperature, service model, software environment, and expected expansion.

Ask the vendor to return three documents: an exact configuration and support matrix, a site-preparation document, and an upgrade and lifecycle statement. Require all assumptions to be written down, especially whether power figures are typical or maximum, whether cooling figures refer to the rack or the facility interface, and which software versions were validated.

For a rack-scale purchase, also request a rack elevation, power single-line diagram, coolant or airflow diagram, cable schedule, acceptance-test plan, replacement procedure, and list of required facility work. These documents let your data-center, networking, security, and operations teams review the same design before an order is placed.

Bottom line

MGX gives manufacturers a flexible way to build accelerated servers and rack-scale systems from reusable NVIDIA-aligned design blocks. Its value is choice and faster system development, not a universal plug-and-play specification. Compatibility, performance, power, cooling, software support, certification, and upgradeability belong to the exact system a vendor validates. Buy the configuration and support package—not the MGX label alone—and make the facility review part of the technical evaluation.
